A massive floating terminal proposed to make its home 14 miles off the coast by Australian mining company BHP Billiton that is. Halle Berry, Cindy Crawford, Dick Van Dyke, Ted Danson, Jane Seymour, Pierce Brosnan and others showed up at Malibu's Surfrider Beach on Sunday to stop the floating madness. The initial project was to be closer to Oxnard, but apparently plans changed as the terminal is going to be located near Malibu's city line.
In a clever demonstration, surfers gathered to paddle out on the boards and formed a giant ring with line crossing through in protest to building in their waters. Daryl Hannah also joined in the ring that made a giant symbol which stands for "prohibited" clad in a black wet suit.
BHP Billiton floater would be the size of three football fields and would unload tankers carrying natural gas from Asia and Australia. The gas would then be piped ashore to heat homes and businesses and generate electricity. The problem is the location not so much the platform itself. Many fear the proximity of the floater would contribute more pollution to the already hazy sky.
Unable to attend stars like Barbra Streisand, Cher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny DeVito, Tom Hanks, Olivia Newton John, and Martin Sheen have signed a petition / letter against the floater and the negative effects it would bring.
