Oh Mandisa. Could the gays have turned against you for your worshiping of anti-Gay author Beth Moore? On the American Idol website, when asked "Who is your American Idol?," Mandisa responded with the following statement: "An author and speaker named Beth Moore. She inspires me to live more like Jesus and I want to do the same."
America's shocking decision to vote Mandisa off 'American Idol' Wednesday night was not a shock at all to those backstage. Sources connected with 'Idol' tell TMZ the buzz behind the scenes last night was Mandisa getting the boot had nothing to do with her performance -- it was all about her openly anti-gay affiliations.According to TMZ sources, lots of Hollywood types were backstage, including agents, PR flacks, managers and special guests. And the sentiment was clear; as one person put it, "Once you don't have the gays - forget about it."
Mandisa is openly a big fan of anti-gay author and lecturer Beth Moore. In her bio on the 'American Idol' website, Mandisa called Moore her "personal American Idol." Moore's website provides links to other sites that locate ministries for "those affected by homosexuality."
Oh, Beth. You're so silly. She has a link on her site (I'm not going to post the link because I'd rather not give them the traffic) listed under "Homosexuality issues," to an "approved ministry" site called Desert Stream Ministries. This ministry provides Christ-centered help for those struggling with a variety of sexual and relational problems, and for those with life-defining illnesses. Their help is founded on the biblical foundation of compassion, integrity, and dependence on God. Somehow I don't think the ministry is there to embrace one's sexuality.
We pray for both Mandisa and Beth Moore.
Mandisa's Anti-Gay Affiliation May Have Done Her In [TMZ]

ustreetdude
Interesting story.
However, since gays account for 10% (i.e. 1 in 10 are gay) ... I doubt they had a serious effect on Mandisa's fate.
What about the other 90% of people who voted her off?
Maybe she just didn't sing the song well.
I tend not to like stories in which "the gays" are blamed in mass for something.
Glamour Puss says:
Who cares if she hates "the gays"? Do you actually think that her hating "the gays" had anyhting to do with her elimination? If this were even half way true why didn't "the gays" do anything about Bush getting re-elected? She will be forgotten in a couple of days and NO ONE will care what she says or doesn't say. It's just some stupid agenda to make people believe that "the gays" have some sort of acceptence..which is more than obvious that "they" don't.
Yeah says:
Maybe she didn't sing the song well AND her narrow-minded preaching offended more than just gay people. Too bad she had to ignore/insult the most enthusiastic and loyal fanbase in the world. Sucks to be Mandisa.
And God - did somebody BURN that shirt after the show? lol
woodyette
I think Mandisa was very talented, however, she is just not "IDOL" material. She was too mature from the start. She has good exposure now for a future in show business, the same as Frenchie has. Frenchie was the same, very talented, but not Idol material., JMHO
Yeah says:
I always really liked Frenchie - my all time favorite Idol moment is still when she sang that duet of 'Band of Gold' with Kim Locke. Glad she's still doing well.
Silasdog says:
I didn't hear about any anti-gay remarks by her, but believe me, any anti-gay talk in show biz results in catastropic penalties for the one making the comments. She is the absolute best singer in the competition, so why she is off the show is up for speculation; it's not just the votes that count, folks. There are other forces working behind the scenes. One reason might be that she's a big woman, and the Idol voters want to see "slim" people.
FunMe says:
Oh cool, those who scream the loudest are usually GAY themselves!
So I'll just go with the understanding that Mandisa is a LESBIAN!
Hey Mandisa, at least you don't have to be a singer, get rich and then throw it all out on drugs like Whitney Houston. You do know she is lesbian too, don't you?
Now Mandisa will just end up the poor man's closet case Whitney!
jason says:
glamour puss, i'm gay and feel perfectly accepted. perhaps not by you or the people who surround you, which doesn't concern me. however, you're wrong in thinking that the gay population could have no effect on the fate of mandisa. for instance, if you were to ask madonna who her most loyal fan base is, i'm sure her answer would be her gay fans. it was the same for donna summer at the height of her career. the backlash to her career after making gay-negative comments (for which she's since apologized) was severe and hurt her sales tremendously.
CUTE BLACK CHICK says:
Ok, a topic like this fuels many a debates. Ooyy, I can see the comments now.
Alright, I am Black and I resent when Blacks feel it is ok, in the name of their religion, to offend another group. Mandisa, what if someone made a comment about Blacks - how would you feel?
Now to her defense, The Advocate (if you read the article) was unfair and kept pressuring her to say something they can use against her. Now, she should of been smarter and not answered but poor thing - she blew it.
Now how is a Black singer going to survive in the music biz not wanting to perform for Gays? The music Biz is full of Gays.
Last thing, I think she was awful. She kept screaming her songs and had no heart. Now, if you want a talented Black singer - Paris - the short girl is awesome.
Anyway, all I am saying in my post is that if you are Black and are used to people making comments about your race - why make comments about other groups? Now I know a Black person has a right to their opinion - I just think we should understand better. Hell, all people should understand better. Why can't we all just get along?
Maybe it will never be possible. Maybe?
Yeah says:
Silasdog - You're probably right that there were a variety of factors at work in Mandisa's ousting. Maybe the powers that be knew that she had a better chance for a career in gospel - which she didn't need the AI competition for and which would have probably been counterproductive for the show - than in R&B (where Ruben and Fantasia have yet to really break through) or, certainly, in pop. I mean, the stylists giving her that atrocious top to wear and the show putting her on early were both bad signs from the getgo.
Maybe also her weight was a factor (bolstered by said atrocious top) - the Sandi Pattis of the world notwithstanding, slimmer artists simply do better in every area of music. I'm sure that if Simon Cowell has anything to do with guiding her career from henceforth, he will rightly continue kicking her ample ass to get the weight off.
CBC - complete and utter Word.
Timothy says:
Maybe your article is true. This gay person read about Mandissa's anti-gay views, and voted on American Idol this past week for the first time. I voted for Elliot about 40 times. Seeing as Elliot came in 2nd to last, my votes for Elliot, spurred by my disdain for Mandissa's hateful "christian" anti-gay views, may have put Mandissa in last place. That's nice to think.
Anon says:
My friends who grew up in the church tell me there are SOOOO many Gays (closet gays) in the church. black churches anyway. A lot of the men are closet cases. The church is a good place for them because they get to sing and do artistic things in their community. So it attracts a lot of Gays. And since they are singing for God they feel saved somehow. it 's a weird thing. Anyway, I've been to some Black gospel churches and there are some men there who were definitely Gay. gays are everywhere.
You Go Girl! says:
Mandisa is making an album with Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah next. It is to be called "Eating Out At the Church Social".
terk says:
LOL You Go girl!
Anyway, I am very disappointed in finding out Mandisa is so anti-gay. I knew she was a Bible thumper, but I could accept that because I really thought she seemed sweet, had a great voice, and beautiful face. I am totally not surprised she was voted off though, because that Shania Twain song was just way out of her range and was a terrible song choice.
Mandisa dear, maybe you need to sit down and have a big long talk with yourself and figure out what it REALLY means to be a Christian. Jesus wasn't a hater, ya know.
Girly Girl says:
1.) CUTIE BLACK CHICK- awesome post.
2.) USTREETDUDE- I get what you are trying to say, but your math won't hold up. Sure, gays are 10% of the population- that is, the GENERAL population. So first of all, we're talking about a show that Ryan Seacrest (aka gay posterboy) hosts. Second, you are assuming that the 10/90 formula will translate into who watches the show, which kids they like, AND that that is the exact proportion of voters.
I hate to break it to you, butI think the majority of idol VOTERS (not necessarily watchers) are teenagers, trailer park peeps and gays. I'm not being ugly- I used to watch the damn show myself. I'm saying, who gets so damn fired up over a crap ass tv show that they they grab the phone and vote?
I like Mandiva. I think she is a large beautiful black woman who by her very presence was breaking the mold in America of a culture who celebrates only all things white, anorexic, and cookie cutter. But she is now gone and who are we left with? Hmmmmm....
Steve C.
What doomed Mandisa was her "spiritual" singing. Also, her "country" performance this week was below average and brought out her most glaring weaknesses. Her's is a voice that requires a high-decibel delivery. If that were the competition, everybody else could go home.
Unfortunately, Mandisa is one dimensional and this year, with much more depth in talent than in previous years, voters will penalize those performers who can't demonstrate versatility.
As an example, Chris was able to demonstrate that he can sing a country ballad almost as well as Keith Urban, yet do a hard rock head banger as well as the best. Good news for him. But, to the degree he can't continue to do his Michael McDonald/Stevie Wonder impersonation, Taylor will be history.
There are 4 or 5 kids with terrific, terrific voices and any one could be the winner. However, my opinion is the winner this year will be the one who demonstrates the ability to sing any genre that's thrown at them. By that measure, there are only a couple that have a shot at winning.
All things considered, the best Idol year so far.
Bored says:
Mandisa is entitled to her opinion just as much as anyone else is.
And for a people who are constantly screaming for tolerance, it seems the gay community doesn't have much of it itself.
WildlyBeautiful says:
*sigh*.
It irritates me to no end in how in this "open society" that when one chooses to voice their opposition to alternative lifestyles they are immediately labeled "anti". It was Mandisa's right as a human being to state what she feels as it realtes to homosexuality.
It is also very funny how Christians are blamed for "hating gays" and promoting that type of thinking when the other top(meaning the most people belong to these religions) two religions (Judism, and Islam) both state that homosexuality is a sin.
I am all for everyone living the type of life that they choose to, that is why we have free will. However, do not place your issues upon me (true acceptance of yourself and what you feel is true) by labeling me as "anti" because I don't agree. It has really gotten a bit tired.
Question says:
Why are you all so afraid of gays? Also, if a man likes to perform anal sex on a girl , is he gay? My boyfriend loves that shit. Just wondering and he is really color coordinated too. Oh boy!
danny says:
oh my god, i cant even believe how fucking dumb the people who post here are.
ok yes, lets say 1 in 10 people are gay. ok, thats for the entire population, not just in certain situations. like for example, american idol voters are probably not 1 in 10, they are probably more like 4-6 in 10. FAGS LOVE AMERICAN IDOL, HELLO. but if this was a vote for like, favorite golfer of the year, the vote probably wouldnt be nearly as gay. but maybe it would, who knows.
but in all reality, its pretty clear to everyone she got voted off cuz she was such a fatty.
oh and if you dont like something than you are anti-whatever it is. like, you dont need to be fucking socrates to understand that. if you dont like fags than you can suck my ass, you are probably wicked boring anyways.
Yeah says:
"Question", was that question directed at all of us, or just at WildlyBeautiful? Because I certainly am not "afraid" of gay men and lesbians.
Question says:
I was asking most people why they hate Gays? i don't understand where this comes from. It's weird.
Anyway, all my boyfriend wants it to have give it from the back so I am thinking he might be gay. Am I wrong? Any gay men out there that can shed some light? I am serious.
Paula says:
I hope to God that they didnt have any affect on her getting the boot. I like Mandisa and I agree with her. Being gay is wrong in the bible and it should be because if God wanted woman and woman together he would have created them and if he wanted men and men together then he would have created them instead of MAN and WOMAN. I am going to say this and then logg off this computer. The day will come when everyone has to stand before God and the ones who choose this DISGUSTING lifestyle of being GAY and LESBIANS-they will be the few of many who will burn in Hell.
Kiki says:
I agree with WildlyBeautiful. Disagreeing and being anti are two different things. I disagree with what Peta does, but I agree with their cause. There are a lot of gay people who believe that they're not being equally but this is what equality is, ome people may not like you. If you think that you should be loved by everyone, you want to be a protected class NOT a part of eqaulity. I'm a black female that attends college and works full-time. I know there are people out there that don't like that I'm black, or a working woman or a woman getting an education. While I may not agree with that, I can't take away their right to not like it. If they come up to me and spew hatred, that's a different story. The thing that's so backwards about this is that this is the reasoning behind hate crime laws, you can not like a certain group of people but it's when you act on it that it becomes a problem. Simply stating that she disagrees does not equal hatred and intent to act on his diagreeance of that lifestyle. If you read The Advocate article you'll see that she was really very respectful.
Kiki says:
Oops,
*being treated equally
*some people
*her disagreence
Karen says:
I agree people have a right to their opinions. However, how much work does it take to keep your opinion to yourself when you are a famous person or in the public eye?
What if some of her fans are Gay? Does she not care about that? Does she only want straight people to buy her albums?
If you don't like a group of people - that is your right. But keep it to yourself. America is for everyone. We don't need to hear about how you don't like some people. Shut up i fyou have nothing nice to say. It's not that hard.
Quoting the Bible says:
The Bible also says it is ok to own slaves. Should we re-own all you Black people too? I mean it says it in the bible.
bestdress says:
Throws HOLY WATER ON THE WHOLE TOPIC!!!
Silasdog says:
Let's get a few things straight. Her last 2 performances were ill-chosen songs. But the performances before that were superb. Uh, did anybody catch the Dinah Washington number she did 2 weeks ago, she smoked it. She had the absolute all around best voice in the competition. However, the tone-deaf bean-heads who are voting have no legitimate musical frame of reference; their musical history only goes back to that crotch-grabbing whore, Madonna.
As for the gays, you can't have it both ways. If you want to flaunt your abnormal sexual preferences, then you're gonna take some criticism, and it will probably get ugly at some point. How hard is that to deduce? If you don't want the heat, stay in the closet; if ya come out, expect some barbs. This simple equation of cause and effect has been around since the dawn of man. And, yes, disagreement doesn't mean hatred. Hey, dig this: When the AIDS thing broke out in NY City back in the 80's, guess which people were caring for the AIDS sufferers? Doing the kind of unpleasant chores that were required? Yes, it was the folks of the Christian persuasion. I knew some of them at the time. Don't worry, the stories of their assistance didn't get into the news at the time (and they weren't interested in publicity anyway), but plenty of gay folks who were helped will testify to the fact.
From a religious standpoint, this country has become a mass of non-thinking, bubble-headed lemmimgs who suck up news soundbites like Kate Moss inhales coke, and walk away concluding they're well informed. People come unglued and outraged because Christians espouse their beliefs on gays. Oh my, such fearful peril in our midst. Meanwhile, Islam has vowed to destroy us (duh, anybody remember 911?) If you were in or around NY on that day, and the days that followed, your evaluation criteria on the world's religions would be altered for life.
DON'T GO THERE says:
"When the AIDS thing broke out in NY City back in the 80's, guess which people were caring for the AIDS sufferers? Doing the kind of unpleasant chores that were required? Yes, it was the folks of the Christian persuasion.:
+++++++++++++++
SILASDOG: HOLD UP WAIT A MINUTE STOP IT RIGHT THERE! I RESPECT ANYBODY'S OPINION AND STAY CALM BUT WHEN YOU TALK OF AIDS IN THE 80'S I GOTTA STEP IN.
MY BROTHER DIED OF FUCKIN' AIDS IN THE 80'S. I WATCHED HIM ROT AND YOU KNOW WHAT THERE WAS NO FUCKIN' CHRISTIAN ANYBODY HELPING HIM OR HIS FRIENDS.
THE GAY COMMUNITY TOOK CARE OF ITSELF DURING THE AIDS CRISIS WITH THE HELP OF OUTSIDERS BUT DON'T GIVE ME THAT CHRISTIAN PEOPLE HELPING CRAP. THEY WERE SAYING AND SHOUTING THAT AIDS WAS GOD'S PUNISHMENT. OUR FREAKIN' PRESIDENT REAGAN REFUSED HELP TO AIDS VICTIM AT THE TIME. ASS HOLE REAGAN AND HIS VP BUSH.
MY FUCKIN' BROTHER ROTTED AND TURNED INTO A FUCKIN' SKELETON AND YOU "GODD FEARING" PEOPLE WATCHED A LOT OF PEOPLE DIE OF AIDS AND DO NOTHING.
SORRY, BUT I DON'T USUALLY VOCALIZE MY OPNINION BUT ONE THING I KNOW ABOUT IS AIDS AND PLEASE DON'T TELL ME THE FUCKIN' CHRISTIANS WERE HELPING AIDS VICTIMS. IN THE 80'S PEOPLE WOULD NOT EVEN SAY THE WORD AND THIS WAS THE MID 80'S TOO.
NO, DON'T GO THERE. DON'T GO THERE. THESE GOD FEARING PEOPLE, I LEARNED, WATCH PEOPLE DIE AND DON'T GIVE A SHIT AS LONG AS THOSE PEOPLE ARE NOT PART OF A LIFESTYLE THEY APPROVE OF. TELL ME WHAT SENSE THAT MAKES?
CHECK YOUR FACTS DUDE. CHECK YOUR FACTS.
Yeah says:
I don't mean to take anything away from Mandisa as a singer. She has one of the best voices ever heard on Idol - richer than Frenchie's, bigger than Kim Locke's and just about anybody else's. I haven't been able to watch the past two performance shows yet, but I thought she was phenomenal on that Dinah Washington number. Flap or no flap, she has an incandescent future.
I also agree in the First Amendment, that people have the right to speak their minds and not face persecution for it (from public or private sources). I'm sure she thought she was giving a generous, loving witness about the inclusiveness of God's love - but it was an inappropriate setting for it, speaking to an audience that was taken by surprise and jarred by it (even those who weren't offended by the 'lifestyle' comment). It was a huge mistake, and unfortunately a very talented artist seems to be paying dearly for it.
However, I think the storm will blow over, and in any event the people who would be most likely to buy a recording of Mandisa's are probably the people LEAST likely to be fazed by 'lifestyle-gate'.
I wish Mandisa the best.
Silasdog says:
Dont Go There, your brother's story is a sad, tragic, and unfortunate episode of humanity. And if YOU checked your facts, you'd already know that anyone claiming to be a Christian, but not helping a suffering person, is a individual who doesn't even know fundamentals of the principles and the precepts he's claiming to adhere to. That person is ignorant, a hypocrite, perhaps both. Anyone who would have voiced an accusation at your brother regarding divine punishment (even if they were thinking it) is damn fool who doesn't have sense to keep his mouth shut So if you want rail out at hypocracy, guess what, I'm right there with ya. We don't need any more fakes, phonies and frauds on this planet, we have more than enough already.
But your brother's story is not the whole story. There was much more happening at the time. Hey, believe what you want. But don't call me a liar, because I don't need to make things up for mine or anyone's benefit; I'm way past that in life, I don't need to B.S. anyone about anything. But I'll tell you this: the roots of bitterness you display are an unfortunate tribute to your brother's legacy. With all due respect, were you really expecting Ronald Reagan, or any politician, to earnestly help? Listen, you find out where people are really at when its time for them to step out and help, take a little pain, sacrifice something that's dear to them, etc. I've seen plenty of both. But here, in this blog, today, I chose to speak of the unselfish acts of kindness I know of. When ya paint with too broad a brush, you just might splash yourself.
Silasdog says:
I apologize to everyone. I should not have rambled on the way I did. Sorry.
DON'T GO THERE says:
I AM SORRY BUT AIDS IS A VERY EMOTIONAL TOPIC FOR ME. BECAUSE I WAS SURPRISED HOW HUMAN BEINGS CAN WATCH OTHER PEOPLE DIE AND NOT CARE. FASCINATING.
THAT SAID, I GUESS EVERYBODY HAD A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE OF CARING FOR SOMEONE WITH AIDS. OTHER GAY FRIENDS CHANGED MY BROTHER'S BED PANS, ETC. THE OMMUNITY WAS VERY UNITED. I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH GAYS UNTIL THAT WHOLE PEIROD AND I LEARNED A LOT FROM THEM ABOUT UNITY AND HUMANITY.
THAT IS WHY THE GAY COMMUNITY TACKLED AIDS SO WELL. NOW DO YOU KNOW WHOTHE FASTEST GROWING GROUP WITH AIDS IS? BLACK WOMEN AND TEENAGERS. ARE WE GOING TO WATCH AS THEY DIE TOO?
I HOPE NOT.
ANYWAY, ONE THING YOU LEARN WHEN YOU SEE PEOPLE DYING OF AIDS IS COMPASSION. MANDISA AND HER LIKE HAVE NO COMPASSION. YET SHE SINGS GOSPEL.
INTERESTING.
Yeah says:
It's ok, Silasdog - emotions are running high about this issue across the board.
Cheers!
DON'T GO THERE says:
PROBABLY NOT THE BEST PLACE TO DISCUSS THIS TOPIC. PEOPLE WOULD RATHER TALK ABOUT K-FED AND BRITNEY AND THEIR LACK OF FASHION SENSE. AND I CAN RESPECT THAT.

that kool-aid smile annoys the shit out of me. and that brunette chick is annoying too. the tall one. get an image consultant. this whole show is annoying. mandisa is like 400 pounds, isn't she? i have no problems with gays but fat girls who wear spaghetti straps - THAT offends me.
Yeah says:

J says:
you only post this because you are probably gay yourself. she was an amazing singer and thats what the show is about, not about her beliefs. You guys are always victims though, so you think
symelanguage says:
bigotry is legal, as long as it doesn't include promotion of violence. Then it becomes a hate crime I think. So Mandisa is only a bigot , and not a hate criminal, I think. And no, contrary to that stupid movie Crash, we are not all bigots. Mandisa is just a backwards girl with a beautiful voice.
Kicking Owl says:
I liked Mandisa. She was pretty, charming, and a decent person. I think the simple fact here is that she was not "Idol Material". Idol Material includes the whole package, not just her voice. The previous post about her size being too large I think was more accurate than the anti-homosexual thing. Christianity teaches to love all people, that no one is perfect or without sin. It's very specific that no one is better than anyone. Sure it says homosexuality is wrong, but it also says lying, adultery, stealing, and many many other things are also wrong. Its trying to show that everyone is flawed, and no one is perfect. If no one is perfect, then we're all on the same level playing field, we are all equals and therein its ok to "love one another".
Too many christians miss that point and condemn the homosexuals. The homosexuals not to be outdone, look for any little reason to condemn the christians. The whole thing is stupid, cause the bible teaches - they are equal via their imperfection. DUH!
One of the most favorite people in my life is a lesbian woman I am friends with. I appreciate her friendship very much. I am open with her that I personally think her lesbianism is wrong, but I also tell her so are many other things, many of which I am guilty of. None of this stops me from loving her as a friend and respecting who she is. It all boils to - no one is perfect. I dont see anything wrong with disagreeing with same sex lifestyles. Gays and straights can still be close friends and family, and disagree. I think in many cases, it has become a reverse hate situation. IE., "If you dont agree with homosexuality then you are full of hate and a bigot". That type of thinking is irrational, unreasonable, and borderline tyranny. I dont hate you for disagreeing with me, so dont hate me for disagreeing with you. We are equals in our imperfections. Pretty simple.
Mandesa is an awesome singer, and will go on to great things. But the contest is not all about being a great singer, its about looks, stage presence, and appealing to the majority (charisma). She did not appeal to the majority because America has been programmed by the media for the last 75 years to believe that good looks, big tits and a skinny ass covers all of one's other imperfections. Like being a cheap slut, a drunk, a drug addict, a stuck-up hateful ass, a crappy parent, and many other similar qualites so many of our current American Idols seem to possess, - regardless of whether they are gay or not. Kind of sad isnt it?
