Is Johnny Weir Too Gay For Figure Skating?

Jw041606

Our favorite ice princess isn't getting the loving from the U.S. Figure Skating Association. They apparently want to butch up the sports image. I'm sorry, but that's never going to happen. There is not ball involved, well accept for the skaters, and the straights aren't going to be wanting to watch those.

Insiders say the U.S. Figure Skating Association is trying to butch up its image by nudging aside the flamboyant men's champ, Johnny Weir.

The murmurs became a roar this week when publicity materials for January's championships in Spokane, Wash., were released. The Web site (and reportedly the print brochure, which The News has not seen) featured every major skater except Weir, the U.S. Men's National Champion, who has held the title for three years.

A tipster told the sports blog Deadspin.com: "It looks like the USFSA is trying to send quite a message, to both the public and to Weir himself, apparently, by omitting him from advertising for the championships."

Says the source: "Word within skating circles is that the USFSA is hoping to replace Weir as men's representative for the sport with [Evan] Lysacek, whom they deem more 'socially acceptable.'"

Not to be a snarky bitch or anything, but the writing for this website has been terrible lately. Have you no editors? When I started reading A Socialite's Life (was this mayhap before any interns were hired?), the writing was witty, flowed well, and was a pleasure to read. Now? Now I feel as though I'm reading a ten-year-old's diary, replete with spelling and grammar mistakes and all the style of a middle-aged midwestern farm-wife. What happened?

I believe the site is written in some dialect of Ebonics

yeah. i still love this site simply because i'm too lazy to get the gossip elsewhere, and the content is interesting. but good god the spelling and grammar is just terrible.

This kid's too gay for EVERYTHING.

Gotta agree 100%. Both Miu and Ron's sites were islands of sophistication in a miserable sea of witless snarkiness. While Ron's maintained his site admirably, I'd like to get my hands on who(m)ever proofs this place (if such a person exists) and slap them silly. It's painful to read and, yes, before any of you start with me, I'm outta here. You're right: I don't have to read it, and I won't. But, geez, Miu, have a little consideration for The Other Person: "There is not ball involved, well accept for the skaters..." WTF does THAT mean?

Please remember that not ALL of us are 14.

That comment above was not intended as a jab at fourteen-year-olds. 14 was just the first number that popped into my head.

So...everybody? Change that "14" to read "18 months..."

Figure skating without gays is like bass fishing without rednecks

please... if there is ever a sport that needs to come out of the closet, it is figure skating

mind you... if he had won gold they would put him on the ice in a tutu and fairy wings... speaking of costumes - his swan was the most amazing costume I had ever seen on a male figure skater

M, you're right. I miss Miu's original posts and lack of blatant grammatical/spelling errors.

No one would give a flip about figure skating right now if it weren't for Johnny Weir. He kicks ass.

This is a joke...this has nothing to do with him being gay its because he's a drama queen. He's making figure skating look bad. There are a LOT of gay figure skaters out there that they do recognize but those guys aren't flamboyant and as outspoken as Weir. This guy thought he was "it" at the Olympics and when it didn't happen, he blamed the "aura" of the building or some chit. Give me a break..DRAMA QUEEN!

Also, I agree with above posters. The writers here have forgotten to use spell check on occasion and some of their jokes have fallen a little flat. It's ok! Just work on it. :)

Johnny is the best... On and Off the ice... he's is the only reason to watch ESPN!!! haha
