Yikes!
hohum says:
She gets more androgynous by the day but here she's looking like a trannie, even worse.
Jane says:
I love how White people take the opportunity to diss BIG LIPS on a White person cause they know they could not get away with it on a Black person.
Most Blacks have full lips - it is an African trait and it is beautiful. No wonder most White actresses are trying to get their lips enhanced.
That is like making fun of an Asian person who does not have round eyes. Almond shaped eyes are inherently Asian - it is not something to make fun of.
Same with full lips. What is wrong with having full lips? They are beautiful.
Why don't you think before you make such a statement. Would you make fun of a Black person's lips?
King Smart Ian says:
Yes, I probably would.
Jimmy Choo says:
I think the shoes are all part of her "I am so above the Hollywood thing" schtick.
KittyLiterati says:
Jane: anyone with a mouth can purse his/her lips, regardless of size. Learn the alternate defintion of "purse" and then stop bitching about discrimination.
Those shoes give her some serious chicken ankles. Oops--let's not make fun of ankles. I'm pretty sure someone will be racially offended by that.
jane says:
kitty litterati: i know what purse means and you know darn sure what miu meant - so don't play coy and innocent. i hit the nail on the head.
KittyLiterati says:
Now I see the light--you did hit the nail on the head. I totally see how "never purse your lips" is Miu's codespeak for, "Through this comment about Julia, I'm surreptitiously making fun of black people's lips because I can't say it to their face."
Jane, you sure do have a way with sniffing out subversive themes in four-word phrases.
terk says:
I hate this fugly bitch. Wish she would just go away. Oh well at least she got horrible reviews for her "acting" in her new play and some nasty comments from critics about her looks (not so good in person, it would seem.)
Jane says:
kitty litterati: then tell me what miu's intention was then on making the lips statement if not because julia has full lips?
would she say it about nicole kidman if she pursed her lips?
come on. the media is all about subtext - it is how they get you here to rant and rave.
you can't be as naive as you sound. you just can't be - i refuse to believe it.
KittyLiterati says:
If you look closely at the first pictue, Julia is pursing her lips. To "purse" means to slightly pucker, to press one's lips together tightly. It doesn't get any clearer than that.
If my naivete excludes me from inventing nonexistent meanings to simplistic phrases and attempting to pass them off as "subtext" in order to prove my political correctness, then I'll take the label.
Jane says:
thank god, finally she/he admits - she/he is naive.
thank you. that was all i was asking of you kittilitterati. now that was not hard, was it?
kitti litterati = n-a-i-v-e. from the horse's mouth. thanks.
las says:
"Why don't you think before you make such a statement."
Why don't you stop trying to stir up trouble over innocent comments?
"you can't be as naive as you sound."
Are you as rude as you sound?
Come on, the "pursing" comment was because it's obvious. Yes, if Nicole Kidman looked like she was smuggling cut lemons in her mouth, Miu would make fun of it.
Yeah, I'm sure Miu was thinking, "Oooh! Julia Roberts, an actress with lips that are too large for her features (unlike many other actresses, who have full lips that fit their faces), is making a funny puckering face with them. Goodie! Now I can subtlely make fun of black people by commenting on the funny face she is making! Even though she is not black!"
So, are you obsessed with bringing irrelevant racial issues into innocent debate, or are you merely stirring trouble?
Jane says:
Las, I examine racial issues for a living. I know how we use certain terms not so innocently but once a person of color comes into the room, we pretend we were being naive and oh so innocent. Shut up. You're a fool. You don't deserve my answer.
Jane says:
Julia Roberts is known for her full lips. Most articles we read about her referring to her lips are referring to their fullness. Same as Angelina Jolie. I am always ready to call people out on their subtle attempts at demeaning and their quick move to cover it up. I'd have more respect if you would at least be honest. What is wrong with someone pursing their lips?
The issue is not the pursing but the issue for Miu is the kind of lips that are being pursed. Hey, if she can nitpick the pursing , I will nitpick her intent. If you are in the kitchen, must be ready for the heat. If there is any Black person posting on this site, don't believe these "you're fishing for race stuff" White folks. Trust me, I have known them all my life and this is the game they play. Most racially charged innuendos are not obvious, they are the most subtle which is why race simply does not go away.
Next time you hear a White person talk about Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts' lips - no matter what context - pay attention to what they are saying. It will give you great insight into the subtleties of White fear, racism, and cowardice. I know for I was raised around such White folks minus my parents thank God. My parents were decent White folks.
King Smart Ian says:
Jane:
You should reread your comments for the pure bigotry they express, e.g. "I have known them all my life and this is the game they play". You are the worst kind of racist.
Maggie says:
Is that Cynthia McKinney posting as Jane?
las says:
"It will give you great insight into the subtleties of White fear, racism, and cowardice."
All this from comments about Angelina having large lips. Which, of course, she does. It's not negative or positive; it's a fact.
Look, don't bother. I come from an ethnic group for whom stereotypes are still accepted in the mass media, though not by name calling. Yet I don't pounce on anyone who quotes from the Sopranos.
Has it even crossed your mind that a cigar is just a cigar -- that whenever a person has features that are larger, smaller or striking in some way, it gets commented on? A person has big feet. Saggy breasts. A big nose. Tiny eyes. ALL these things get commented on as well.
Adrian Brody gets noted for his large beaky nose; does that mean anyone who does so is anti-Semitic, since that is one racist stereotype? When Nicole Kidman is called an Aussie, does that mean they're implying she's descended from criminals? If someone has a bad tan, does that mean anyone who dares to say so is mocking the features of ethnic groups with darker skin?
" "I have known them all my life and this is the game they play"
I'll let this statement rest on its own. It speaks for itself.
But consider carefully. If anyone said something like that about African-Americans, they would have people gnawing their face off in a matter of seconds.
"I know for I was raised around such White folks minus my parents thank God. My parents were decent White folks."
Except they raised you to preach racist bigotry, and to pass automatic judgement on others based on comments that were not even close to being offensive. Not so decent.
doofus says:
wow, jane, for someone who "examines racial issues for a living" (what does that MEAN, anyway? don't we ALL do that when we talk sociological issues?...), you sure don't seem to know what you're talking about.
pursing one's lips has ZERO to do with racial ANYTHING. when anyone purses their lips, (black, white, asian, WHATEVER...) it's not an attractive look.
what was miu's intention when she made the statement about not pursing your lips? uh, it was "DON'T PURSE YOUR LIPS". what would she say about Nicole Kidman? she'd say "nicole, don't purse your lips". please, there is enough racism in the world today; we don't need people crying "racism" where there isn't any. and KSI is exactly right, you are the worst kind of racist - making a blanket statement about "white folks".
you answer las (whose post was right on, BTW) and then say he/she "doesn't deserve your answer"? and las, both of your posts were brilliant.
Jane, I'd suggest you'd do well to 1)read up on racial issues, 2) find out what pursing one's lips really mean, and 3)open your mind. not all of us "white folk" are racist. and basing an opinion of someone on their skin color (which is EXACTLY what you're doing) is no better than what you're complaining of.
Jane says:
My parents were soldiers who marched with Blacks during the civil rights movement. And sent us to progressive schools and even walked us from our nice cozy town to Black schools so we can have Black friends.
I love when Whites feel cornered. I know White racism and I know it well. I know all of its sublteties. Most racists are not skin heads wearing swastikas. No, most people are racists who feel very entitled to say anything they want because they are not Nazis so they can't be racist.
The biggest White racists are the ones who don't want anyone to put any limitations on what they can say and how they can say it. They feel entitled.
Most racist comments, as I said, are not blatant. They are very subtle and creep into our everday language.
Hitler was known for putting out cartoons of Jews with big noses and hairy bodies as caricatures. It is just a cartoon right?
When we have an unresolved problem, we call it "getting the kinks out".
When someone gives and takes back we call them an "Indian giver".
When we lie just a little it is a "white lie".
Language is powerful and old and carries with it all the intentions of our insecurities and bias.
And this is why racism never goes away because once you call a racist on their subtlety, their argument? "What is your problem - you are the one with the problem? I did not say "I hate blacks, I just said Angelina Jolie has big lips and she does". How many posts I have seen calling Angelina Jolie's lips "jumbo lips". This is their argument.
Why do people make fun of Mick Jagger's lips yet not make fun of Lionel Ritchie's lips, let's say? Because Mick is White and to attack Lionel would be attacking his ethnicity so we use White people with ehthnic features as a way to work out our resentment for very ethnic features.
And by the way, I think White people can handle a little racism, don't you think? We certainly have been doing it for centuries - so what if you get some of it back here and there?
doofus says:
so, because your parents marched during the civil rights movement, you know more about race issues than anyone on here?
clearly, the opposite is true. sounds like your parents indoctrinated you with some pretty fucked up, self-loathing garbage. ever hear the quote "methinks thou dost protest too much"? BTW, I'd still like to know in what profession you "examine racial issues for a living". Are you a sociology professor? an analyst for the Southern Poverty Law Center? an employee of HateWatch?
and I have to laugh at your last paragraph. if you're not kidding, then you're even more ignorant that most of us on here have pointed out.
NO RACISM IS OK. And for you to say racism against ANYONE is OK because that group dished it out in the past is just messed up, and goes against your alleged beliefs.
doofus says:
oh, one more thing...
do you actually believe that people use a white person's "ethnic features" to work out resentment toward (or make fun of) ethnic features? That is, people make fun of Mick's lips because they really want to make fun of Lionel's lips but can't because it would be "racist"?
uh...................
call me when the shuttle lands, OK?
Jane says:
The beliefs we have about large lips and full lips being not as attractive as White thin lips are evident when we attack Mick Jagger's lips. What is wrong with his lips? It is our perception that these lips are less attractive. Whites dare not say this about a Black person like Lionel Ritchie because they understand it is a feature that is racially specific.
Whites have been responsible for the genocide and killings of millions of people, Native Americans/Blacks, because of their race.
We have built this country on racism. It is time Whites understand what it is like be be hated. It is an unavoidable change of current. We have had a racial agenda that has killed alienated millions - when do we think karma wise we will pay for this?
I am proud of my heritage as a White person but I am not proud of what we have done to other people. And if a person of color hates me then I accept it because I understand. I have tutored poor kids in the past in tough neighborhoods. The first thing I tell them? "I don't expect you to like me. I don't expect you to trust me. I get it. But my intentions are good so if you want to give me a chance then you decide. But I understand why you see a White woman who was raised a certain way and not trust her. "
You will not believe the kind of doors this opens. If only Whites would udnerstand that what people of color want from us is an admission of guilt. Once it is understood that we are aware of our screwed up history then people of color feel more comfortable with us.
Yet, Whites who are so proud are not willing to submit to this. They don't want anyone to tell them they are wrong or at least that they are benefiting from a system that eradicated other ethnic groups in order to be in power.
And again, in working with troubled Black youths in the past, the first thing we start with and we are trained to start with is language.
Language is not innocent. A girl who is called a bith or a ho will see herself as just that - a bitch or a ho.
A Black girl who calls her hair "nappy" or thinks her nose is "too big" will have self esteem issues because Vogue magazine is telling her the millionth way to "straighten her hair".
A lot of the young Black girls did not like their lips. I could not impress on them how many millions White people were paying to look like them. These children were beautiful but our language and perception of their features has ruined the way they see themselves.
I also made it clear to them I am no White savior - far from it and believe me they did not see me as that. Why? Because I admitted and succumbed to the errors of my history. I am ashamed of White history and its eradication of Native American culture, of the Holocaust, of slavery - I am ashamed of this.
My shame makes me humble and thus never allowing me to think for one second I can save anybody. I can only apologize for my culture.
Language is powerfull and I will continue to challenge its supposed "innocence". A good friend is writing his thesis on this very subject. Many other books have also been written on it too. Obviously, you all have not read any of them.
KittyLiterati says:
How noble of you to place yourself in a pseudo-altruistic position and say, "Oh, and I had black friends, too." Your self-righteous spiels smack of one who only says those things because he/she wants to seem racially empathic and politically correct.
You went to "progressive" schools--so what? We're supposed to feel bad about your tirades because your white family condescended to the lower racial class? Bottom line is: you didn't have the same struggle as any of those black kids because you're white, no matter how bad you try to prove otherwise. You know nothing about what it's like to be a black girl and survey your looks, so don't speak for a race that you only pretend to understand.
Plenty of black girls have self-esteem issues--so do white girls, Asian girls, Hispanic girls, and every other race that has had to assimilate into modern Western culture. So what's your point?
On the other hand, there are many black girls who think of themselves as beautiful and don't need anyone to come to their defense. I'm black and I have full lips that I (and plenty others) happen to think are pretty awesome. I'm pursing them at your bullshit right now.
Signed,
The Naive One
Jane says:
KittyLiterrati:
A black girl with self esteem issues about her looks is still further away from gaining respect for her looks in a society that puts White beauty on a pedestal.
Yes, White girls have self esteem issues but the lengths they have to go through to attain the status quo image of what is beautiful is less.
The standard of beauty is still White skin, light eyes, blonde hair, etc. Look at those covers of all your glamour magazines. Look at your music videos, your Hollywood films, your commercials, look at them and tell me we don't reject black beauty every time. The little black girls I have known had no way of attaining this beauty. It is racially impossible. So a White woman, no matter what she looks like, is still ineherently considered more valid than a Black woman.
And no, I will NEVER know what it is like to be Black. Nor do I claim to. I will NEVER know the difficulties of being black in this world. When my Black male friends try to hail a cab and have it pass them by - I WILL NEVER know what that is like.
However if I submit to the harshness of my history and work very hard at making sure I don't repeat my ancestor's mistakes then I have done half of my job as a White person. I vote in every election for legislature that ensures minorities will have a voice. I volunteer. I listen to my friends. I read as many books as I can. I do what I can to undo my history of violence, of Jim Crow, of torture, of slavery, of lynchings, of degredation. I must work hard every day to be more aware, more knowledgeable so when I have kids - they will know.
No, I WILL NEVER know what it is like to be Black. But I can know what it is like to be a White person with a respect for history, a rejection of its failures and a hope for a future that ensures Blacks, native Americans and other ethnic groups have finally attained the economic and social power we Whites have so violently taken away from them continuously for over 400 years.
las says:
Kitty is doing quite well, so I'll leave the debates to her, because I know if I read much more, my head is going to explode. And thank you, doofus.
But I can say this, Jane -- it's ridiculous of you to start shrieking online about racism if you even admit yourself that you do not know what it's like to be discriminated against. You only come across as a knee-jerk type, who is always looking for something to get offended by.
You obviously do not know much about actual racism, except what your "progressive" school taught you, and apparently you believe that stopping whatever you perceive as racism to be a sacred duty. Try focusing on REAL racism. It's not hard to find. The real disservice to people everywhere is pouncing on innocuous remarks and making a silly spectacle of racial equality.
Oh yes, and you are not going to convince other people to agree with you by classifying everyone by race ("as a White person"), constantly referring to them by race, and making racist remarks. That makes you much worse than the eeeeevil media types you disdain.
And I'll add that there is a simple reason why Julia Roberts' lips are not considered very attractive: They don't fit her face. Her face is long and narrow. Compare to Debbie Harry, who also had full lips and a wide smile -- but also has a round face.
And if the media hates "full lips" so much, then why do actresses like Liv Tyler and Angelina Jolie get words like "luscious" and "sexy" used for theirs? Your entire argument is one long absurdity.
Jane says:
Las and Kittilitteratti, You continuously overlook the tough points I make and concentrate on the banal. Whatever, you are all entitled to your opinions as I am to mine.
There are plenty of White progressives who attack White racism. It is nothing new. Those are the people I respect. The true soldiers who get angry, who indict, who care and who are willing to take the punches in the name of unapologetic racial justice.
Think of people like the late William Kunstler - a White attorney who represented members of the Black Panthers and Angela Davis. There are many White soldiers who are willing to do the "dirty work".
Those are the people I look up to. Say what you will. Whatever.
True disservice to racial equality is ignorance, lack of dialogue and fear - and the inability to not call people on dumb stuff they say that are based in screwed up racial hang-ups we've adopted.
I continue my work as I hope you do yours. To each his own. But as the political current is now proving to us, it is only a matter of time before the people you'ved walked all over will walk all over you. Oppressed people will win. It is inevitable. Rome must fall. As it did once. It shall again.
Ebony Eyes says:
Jane, wow, I am impressed how tough you are. Cool. Thanks for sticking up for us! I am Black and I like White people like you. I like all people as long as they respect who I am. I also agree with you, to be considered beautiful Black women are expected to look like Halle Berry who is half White. Go figure.
Theman says:
You bitches need to just shut up with all this bullshit. This ain't the office water cooler and your opinions areless enlightening than the 10 minutes I just spent looking at my asshole in the mirror.

WTF does she capitalize White? It's not a proper term, idiot.
I just wanted to ridicule Julia's granny shoes, because unlike her lips, she CAN control that.
Mamasita says:
I agree white is not a proper term. It is an improper term. Very improper.
Let's hear it for the Chicanos! And love luscious lips like Julia's. Suck me Julia.
Mamasita says:
Also, if white is used as adjective than no caps but if used as a proper noun like "I am White" than caps.
Jackson failed grammar, haha. English is not even my first language dude.

I do understand what EbonyEyes is trying to say, but seriously I'm black (latinamerican actually) but I look black, and honestly I am not at all seeing the racism in the comment about julia. It is stupid, to say that the media disregards big lips on white people because they're really being racist, because everytime I turn on E! news or any of those shows they make me want to puke talking about Angelina's beautiful lips. What about Scarlett Johanson? Sure she's no Angelina but she has pretty full lips. The thing about julia is not only does she have full lips, but they sort of have no shape and her mouth is very long, so it just doesn't fit her face, and it looks even weirder when she purses her lips, hence the comments by Miu. Besides I have been told by different white, asian, and black people that I am pretty, and most importantly they have told me to wear my hair down because its gourgeus. And I bet theres a bunch of white, asian and black people who would not find me attractive. As for the Halle Berry comment ...people consider Beyoncé beutiful too, and she's not half white, neither is Will Smith.
