Jake Gyllenhaal Offends Gulf War Vets

He's not offending me in those skin tight biking pants (is that what you call them?). However, his comment about how Gulf War soldiers just sat in their tents and masturbated all day long, didn't go over to well with those who served over there.

Movie star Jake Gyllenhaal has shocked American Gulf War veterans by joking they did nothing but masturbate during their time in the desert in 1991. The cheeky 25-year-old starred in Jarhead, a movie exposing the U.S. soldiers' lack of combat in the Middle Eastern conflict.

He said, "The U.S. soldiers were sent to the desert for 122 days and they sat in the same tent and did nothing, except a little too much masturbating."

Nice comment you ungrateful little shit stain. I'd like to see his ass in a real war and not on some Hollywood movie set with a Kraft table 100 feet from the combat action. I'm sure he'd spend his days crouched in a corner of the tent rocking back and forth sucking his thumb.

What a worthless p.o.s! Someone should send him to a real war and see how he feels. Asshole!!!!!

It was a line from Jarhead.

I'm liking him in that beard. Woof!

Jake is a sensible young man. He's also quite intelligent. He starred in Jarhead, and that's probably why he feels the way he does. He did have to do his homework, you know. This is HIS interpretation. So what? Why pick on him, of all people? Pick on some of those other stupid young stars who spend all their time partying, drinking and drugging.

Jake's looks great in anything he puts on. He's always doing something physical. He's an athlete.

I was in the Army during Desert Storm and there were many soldiers who fought hard and were killed or wounded. But there were also many who had little to do and, for them, Jake's description is about right.

I'm sure it was a joke. People are so touchy...

May 2, 2006 11:07 AM

to Jake's girl....

while I agree that a lot of celeb quotes are taken out of context, exaggerated and outright MISquoted...

think about if one of YOUR family members fought and died during the first Gulf War...

wouldn't YOU be just a little bit offended?

While Jake was out of line to make such a generalization, his comment was clearly made in the context of the film he starred in -Jarhead. If people are going to be offended, aim it at the film, not the actor.

I know people, really....this had to do with the movie. People really need to chill. I feel like everyone is always looking for a reason to get upset or offended.

"I'm forever Jake" you asked the following, "Why pick on him?" Well, for starters, he fucking said something horrible disrespectful to those who selflessly risk their lives to protect his right to say stupid shit. Like this piece of shit has EVER done anything remotely close to that....

Ever hear of being killed while you wait? Shells, incoming.. to the camp? So tell a soldier that to his face partner.. especially while wearing your expensive tight-racing britches.. and cute helmet..

My husband was in Desert Storm and wasn't infantry so they really were just sitting around playing frisbee and waiting. He said it was an entirely accurate movie except for the getting naked thing, lol.

I know some Gulf War vets and they too say that Jarhead is an accurate movie. About 90% of the troops stood around and waited for something to happen. They didn't have much to do except for what Jake says... ask any guy and they'll tell you that's how they pass the time. I do think he exaggerated and he should make and other statment expressing his grattitude towards the other 10% that actually did something and were in the line of fire.

Well, guess what? My husband is part of that other 10%. And why should I aim my anger at a movie when it was an irresponsible, uniformed, pampered asshole that actually made the statement. He obviously didn't finish his "homework". And he was in a movie, a RECREATION of the war within the safety an security of the set and knowing what was going to happen at all times by following the script. The men and women who lived it didn't have that luxury.

Hero's wife you can disagree all you want with Jake's statements but he's still not the offensive names you called him. He's one of Hollywood's finest young men.

Don't take words out of the context!

He talked about his movie.

And by the way: It would have been better if they would've had masturbated all the time instead of killing people down there!

You Americans are so fucking pro war - it sucks!

May 2, 2006 4:50 PM

The line is FROM THE MOVIE Jarhead, dumbasses!!

May 2, 2006 8:36 PM

Yetused, try not to lump all Americans into one ignorant stereotype, thereby proving yourself to be the stereotypical pretentious small-minded European jerk who looks down on Americans without getting to know them. For your information, the majority of Americans are AGAINST the war, according to current polls. And as far as I can tell, despite the fact that ONE reporter wrote this story up with the headline "Gyllenhaal Shocks and Offends Gulf War Veterans" and it was picked up by a few other media organizations, there has been no outcry from veterans at all. No one but the guy who wrote the story, who did NOT identify himself as a veteran, seemed to have taken offense at all until he wrote it, and even now, the majority of commenters clearly understand that it was made in the context of the movie and was not meant as an insult.

idiots
you guys should get a frigging life, dumbasseses said it, before you get you panties in a bunch and start arguing get a life and watch the movie,,,its a line from the movie i repeat idiots idiots idiots....u guys are stupid and pathetic arguing of stupid drama

May 3, 2006 10:44 AM

like all hollywood stars, he believes because he was in a MOVIE about something, he actually understand reality.

maybe plenty of idiots in america buy that, but some of us realize the lot of you are high school drop outs who think the LA Times is proper news and wouldn't know reality if your publicist tried to explain it to you.

GYLLENHALL- SHUT UP AND LET THE TROOPS SPEAK FOR ONCE.

Magnolia and all those offended by this out of context quote, saying nasty shit about Jake, need to shut up. Jake said all this because not only is the movie based on the true story written down by one of the soldiers but Jake met and spend a lot of time talking with that specific soldier. So what he said is true for the people in that particular situation. He's not saying that all of the soldiers involved did nothing but masterbate but he is saying that some of them were given a lot of training and it basically went to waste because they were never able to use their knowledge to do anything except sit around and wait for something to happen.

The responses here from people who clearly never saw this site before shows EXACTLY how organized the criminal class of the right really is. These people get outraged over the damndest things. Tens of thousands of people died in both wars, not that the average American count more than the number of yellow fucking ribbons there are around the old fucking oak tree. JG's comments are his, and they aren't worth an iota of this FAKE and FABRICATED brouhaha. Go call up Rush, Bill O', and the rest of your gang and finally just give us all a fucking break and leave the goddam country.

It's a joke, but it's an insightful one. Has anyone here been in the army and will refute that? Yes. You do masturbate a lot. It happens when there are few girls around. There is no privacy so if a guy does it, the rest of the guys just have the courtesy to look the other way.
