You either love her or hate her. There is no middle ground when it comes to Oprah Winfrey. Her fans are extremely devoted to her, so much that they are intent on her receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. There is even a website dedicated to this - Oprah4PeacePrize.

Rocky Twyman, founder of Oprah for Nobel Peace Prize movement, said he first met Winfrey at a fundraiser and after admiring her goodwill, believes the concept to recognize her came from God.

Twyman's Web site is seeking to garner 100,000 signatures to draw attention to the committee judging the nominees. The site calls Winfrey a "human angel of light who has revolutionized the entire world."

“She is just so beloved all over the world,” Twyman said. “What we’re trying to do is hopefully influence the Nobel committee."

But Winfrey's fan club faces challenges. The Nobel committee reviews hundreds of nominations and narrows the list down to a few finalists. Professors, governments, previous prize winners and committee members are all allowed to nominate someone for the award.

Oprah is the best women in the whole of.......EARTH LOL!! Any one disagrees you know were to find me!!! JUST TRY ME!

May 26, 2006 3:15 PM

FAT CHANCE!

God, i can't stand her. And wtf? the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE?!?! Puh-lease. Do they give that to people who give out lots of prizes, b/c maybe then she should win...

May 26, 2006 3:39 PM

I think you're all ignoring her humanitarian aid in giving free cheap cars to fat-assed, bon-bon muching yentas who watch her show.

May 26, 2006 3:49 PM

I LOVE OPRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not think of a more worthy person to receive such an honour.

May 26, 2006 4:11 PM

Jane:
Help me understand what Oprah has done that's so wonderful other than keeping overweight hausfraus from getting dinner ready on time.

She could feed thousands for what she chooses to spend on clothes every year. She could fund disease reserach for what she spends on private jets every year.

How does she (herself, not her show) help anyone but herself?

For the record, I neither love or hate her.
But if she gets a Nobel Prize that'll change.

May 26, 2006 4:43 PM

Through her personal Oprah Winfrey foundation Oprah has supported many organiztions with millions of her own dollars including an all girls academy in South Africa and $100,000 rewards for the capture of child molestors and Katrina victims. She has been an advocate for the rights of woman and children. Because her advocacy tehre is an Oprah Bill that required U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to establish a national database of convicted child abusers.

Even the way she chooses to use her show says alot about her humanitarian efforts.

Bono deserves one more than Oprah, as current celebrities go.

I would classify Bono in the same class as Oprah - wealthy so I don't think he deserves it, either. I *expect* people like them to give and give and GIVE without needing accolades, the most prestigious being the Nobel Prize.

Why not give it to an Unknown Hero, someone that hasn't used their money to get others to accomplish things. (Even Angelina Jolie gets down in the dirt, so to speak.)
How often does Oprah really get in there and work in the humanitarian causes she monetarily supports?
Besides, her Angel Foundation - that's not all, if any, of her own personal fortune - it's donations from her fans.

Oprah has had many people on her show much more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than she is. I hope she discourages this current effort to give her that honor. That would show me she's brighter and more honorable than what she currently appears to be.

May 26, 2006 7:05 PM

Well, if they gave the Peace Prize to Arafat, they might as well give it to Oprah.

May 26, 2006 7:20 PM

In addition to raising millions for Katrina and women in the Congo through her public charity, in addition to getting companies to give free goodies to deserving guests on her show, Oprah has personally donated a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS of her OWN MONEY to charity despite coming from extreme poverty and abuse.

I don't think anyone else in world history has come from so little to have given so much as Oprah Winfrey.

Lots of celebs talk the talk, but only Oprah walks the walk.

May 26, 2006 7:24 PM

Bullshit

May 26, 2006 11:23 PM

King Ian, what have you done to help your fellow man? My guess is nothing. Shut up, please. You are a totally irritating loser.

May 26, 2006 11:39 PM

Ian, I have talked to people who hate Oprah and I have come to one conclusion which I will sum up in one word: Jealousy.

Stop sitting on your Dorito-chip-created derriere and try to make the world a better place. Cease from criticizing other people who have the guts to take a stand for something good.

You sound like an arrogant pig!

Good point, Kris.

May 27, 2006 2:34 AM

Good topic. I don't know about the Peace Prize, but I totally adore Oprah Winfrey. I never watched her show much in the early years, but started around two years ago. Now I am her biggest fan. I couldn't help myself. What I admire about Oprah the most is that she is a doer. The subjects she has covered on her show are the most important issues of the day. She is educating America in a way that nobody else is. Her show is completely powerful! Oprah calls the shots, so it was her who changed the direction of the topics. Who else would put up $100,000 each time to catch child molesters? What about some of the big-name Hollywood directors and producers like George Lucas and Spielberg? You don't hear about Donald Trump doing that. He gives money to charities too, but he's super busy building extreme golf courses.

Helping the less fortunate is a noble act, but there is no law stating that wealthy people have to do it. If they don't give, they're not doing anything illegal. People forget that Oprah doesn't have to help any of us.

If anyone has noticed, Oprah hasn't been giving away as many "surprises" on her show lately because her money is going to other great causes. Her Angel Network is wonderful. The idea is super smart. She has so many fans, and this way she can do even more by allowing them to get involved. Oprah put down a huge chunk of her own money for the Katrina victims when she helped build the new homes on Angel Lane. And right now, Oprah is building a school in Africa for girls. I watched the show about Africa and bawled my eyes out. Oprah cares about these people. She tries to help out wherever she can, and I love her for that.

Oprah is far from perfect. She was raped at 9 years old and has battled weight issues all of her life. Some people think she's full of herself. People criticize her for living with her boyfriend. People get offended when she talks spiritual. I've even heard several black women say she shakes her hair too much. These things are NOT what you hate a person for. If you do, you need to examine yourself. You have to look at the goodness of the person.

Oprah earned every penny she made, so criticizing her wealth irritates me. Nobody left her a hefty inheritance. Quite the opposite. She was a poor, black southern girl who was told to give up many times.

Angelina Jolie does great things, but it seems like her humanitarian efforts will always be based overseas, never in America. I love Bono too, but he's a much-loved white male rock star. Big difference.

May 27, 2006 5:43 AM

Steven you ROCK!!OPrah really is a good women did you know when she was a child she got raped!!YES so she has come a long way and has done really well!!The rest of you dont know what you talking about!!!

May 27, 2006 6:50 AM

If being raped is the criteria for awarding the Nobel Peace prize, why don't we find someone who was gangraped and give them 10 Nobel Peace prizes?

Your definition of eligibility for the Nobel Peace prize is ridiculous and a sickening indication of how celebrity status is viewed as some kind of achievement. If you really want to find someone who is not a celebrity, who has saved thousands of lives and is making a fundamental difference in lives of people around the world, google Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health. Then compare his work and dedication to a woman who gets advertisers and sponsors to contibute everything that she then slaps her name on. I'm not jealous of Oprah Winfrey or anyone else, but to mention she or Angelina Jolie or Bono as in any way as eligible for the Nobel Peace prize makes a mockery of the entire concept.

Also, I don't like Doritos

May 27, 2006 8:17 AM

Oprah has a big enough ego as it is, she doesn't need a Nobel Peace Prize to boast about.

She has done a lot of good things to help people, but keep in mind that she also was in Beloved. I can't forgive her for that. There are also many other people who deserve the award.

May 27, 2006 8:23 AM

I am sure that no one here is thinking that being raped is the criteria for the Peace Prize, and like I said, I don't know much about the honor, so I don't want to adamantly say she deserves it, but at the same time, just because she is a celebrity, should she be denied it? Oprah's wealth and celebrity status help to make things happen, and she is continually doing great things for other people.

I mentioned Oprah's rape because it is another traumatic event that she had to overcome. This is why she is so loved by her fans. She went to the school of hard knocks. Her message to her fans is "don't allow the pain of the past to define who you are." This means A LOT to people, especially the abused, women, and anyone facing discrimination.

I hope that you are a person who has really tried to stomach her. I hear people say they don't like her, but they haven't given her a chance. They watch a little bit of her show, decide they hate her, and flip the channel without really observing what the topic is or understanding what her goal is. That's not fair. The topics have been excellent!!! The topics are sometimes secretive things that no one else wants to talk about. For instance, she had a show months ago about nice, cute all-American boy who got sucked into the seedy world of pornography and drug abuse via his computer. His mother never had a clue until he started withdrawing years later. It was an eye opener. I thought every person in this world who knows a kid using the Internet ought to see that show.

Oprah does heavy shows and then does something light-hearted and fun, like her giveaway shows. Her audiences go ballistic, hence, the spoofs on "SNL." They never know when she's going to do it. And let me tell you, she gives away thousands of dollars worth of highest-quality stuff to each person filling a seat. They can't believe they got so lucky, so they scream and cry. It's fun to witness the excitement. It's another instance where you think to yourself, "She doesn't have to do this," but she's showing her fans some love.

I also don't think it is fair of you to describe her audiences in such an unflattering manner. Bon bon munching yentas? Oprah's fans run the gamut. She is loved by every type of person you can imagine--young, old, rich, poor, black, white, male, female.

May 27, 2006 10:04 AM

A true humanitarian donates privately and without the need for adulation.

Oprah is a publicity whore.

And for the record, that cow never gave $250 million to anyone but Burger King.

May 27, 2006 10:45 AM

I don't think anybody's jealous of Oprah, She might be jealous of others. She doesn't have any of the important things in life children or a family.
I watched her one day where she was talking down marriage( I guessed because she isn't married or has never been asked). She makes 300 million a year and she's only worth a couple billion( She spends it all).

May 27, 2006 11:43 AM

If coming out of extreme poverty and absue to give a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS (see Business week's philanthropy list) doesn't justify a Nobel Prize, then I don't know what does.

And Oprah does give quietly. The giving she does on TV is from Pontiac or her Angel Network where fans have the right to know where their money is spent and are inspired to give more. And who cares if she's a publicity whore. Unlike other celebs she can back up the hype with spectacular philanthropy.

But behind the scenes Oprah has given ten times more money than probably every other Nobel Prize winner COMBINED.

May 27, 2006 12:29 PM

I think everyone here is jealous of Oprah. She makes HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS A YEARS, has so many millions of fans that she was voted the GREATEST WOMAN IN AMERICAN HISTORY, has been in a long-term loving relationship with a man who asked her many times to be his wife, has a loyal best-friend named Gayle that most women could only dream of, is so beautiful she became Miss Black Tennessee at age 19, is the most infleuntial book critic of all time, is the world's ONLY black billionaire (see Forbes international rich list), and is a mother to the thousands of African Orphans she's helped by giving a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS to charity.

She's quite simply the most successful woman of all time and the most generous black to ever live. If she were a white male she would have won the Nobel prize years ago.

May 27, 2006 2:07 PM

People who dog on Oprah are either jealous of her sucess or resent a black woman having such wealth and power. Why else would anyone attack the greatest black philanthropist of all time when all she does is bring light, love, literature and laughter into the homes of millions of soccer moms?

When Oprah starts personally lobbying for the Nobel Peace Prize, I'll start worrying. That, of course, isn't going to happen because although I'm no fan of hers I do think even she's aware it would be undeserved. Besides, not one entertainer (and that's what she is, like it or not) has EVER won the award and believe me, Oprah won't be the first. The public outcry would be ENORMOUS. And the majority would be in that class of people Oprah herself so admires - the rich, the very people she's tried so hard to mimic (and unsuccessfully, imo).

Basically, Oprah does everything she can do to avoid controversy and has even admitted to that.
That's why she has that mooch Gale King pasted to her--to run interference.

(remember the incident in Paris with Hermes?

O: KNOCK KNOCK

H: who's there?

O: It's ME(!!!) OPRAH!!! LET ME IN!

H: we're closed, sorry.

Gale: HOW DARE YOU! DO YOU KNOW WHO OPRAH IS???

O: (hiding now behind Gale, whimpering cuz Tina Turner ain't gonna get that scarf she wanted to give her)

H: Oprah? Oprah who?

Gale: WTF! OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW

O: (full-on crying now, shaking, near fainting)

H: sorry, madame, please return during opening hours.

[cut to the next day when the American press got wind of this] Silence from Oprah, lots of excuses and lies from Gale.

LOL one billionaire chick with her sidekick Gale in Paris where NOBODY ever heard of OPRAH. lol

Oprah can be a classless weenie when put in a situation that most of us peons could easily handle with more grace, poise and MANNERS than she displayed on several occasions, Paris/Hermes only being her most publicized.

Oprah - Nobel Peace Prize
In Gale's dreams maybe.

May 27, 2006 3:49 PM

I gained a lot of respect for Oprah for having the courage, self-respect, and power to force the CEO of Hermes to come on her show and apologize for not granting her the VIP treatment she was clearly entitled to. Had it been a white celeb of similar staure (say Princess Diana) there's no way she would have been excluded from the store.

Any other black would have been too cowardly to generate the controversy and would have let the situation slide, but Oprah stood up for her dignity and DEMANDED the respect she has earned, and got it.

If Oprah doesn't win the Nobel prize the prize will lose all credibility. Unlike other winners, Oprah's contribution to the world can actually be measured in dollars and cents, to the tune of a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS spent wisely on education for third world girls who will now have fewer unwanted pregnancies and become more invested in each child.

I can't think of anyone who deserves the prize more. Talk is cheap, but Oprah backs it up with a QUARTER OF BILLION DOLLARS worth of philanthropy.

May 27, 2006 4:56 PM

No one has ever won the Nobel Peace prize because they gave money away. Bill Gates and George Soros give much more away and the dollars have had a greater impact. The idea behind the prize is to recognize people like Doctors Without Borders who actually put their lives on the line to serve the sick or Desmond Tutu who protest apartheid at the risk of their own life. Are you all really so vapid, so celebrity-focused, so absolutely fucking stupid that you would compare Oprah and her TV show to someone like Desmon Tutu or people who have risked their lives or been beaten because of what they believe.

May 27, 2006 5:42 PM

Kris your choice of words clearly define you as a woman who hates Oprah. Were you a fly on the wall in Paris? How do you know what happened? You think your little scenario of words above was clever huh? I'll betcha you think you are really smart, a great writer. Well, I think you're ignorant, jealous to see a black woman achieving something you can't. Har Har. All small-minded, racist people need to vamoose off the planet! You are bringing humanity down with your presence!

Check your facts. King Turd has a mental block, as his brain will not allow the "quarter billion dollars" idea to sink in, although several people keep repeating it to him. Oaf.

Why don't you opposers get your dose of Prozac filled? How can you scrutinize anyone who is making a positive difference? That is flabbergasting! Try viewing the glass as half full once in a while. Why can't you see others for who they really are? Good, caring people. Yes, those people really exist.

So Jolie gets down in the dirt huh, more than Oprah? She must be someone you already love, so I guess you'd nominate her right?

King Turd knows someone who better deserves the award. Good for giving us a name. Say that, but don't hate on Oprah and say all these stupid, false lies. I ask you, is Oprah doing all these wonderful things just to finally be seen after being on TV for nearly 20 years? Are her tears fake? Does she really need more publicity? Does she need to get rid of some extra money? Oprah doesn't need to "mimic" anyone rich. SHE IS RICH! Those of you who are against her having the award have all shown that this debate is not about the award at all. It's about your hatred for a good-hearted person. Since you never liked Oprah in the first place, you are against her getting recognized for anything she does. If she were a never-married, uneducated, ghetto-talking black entertainer with six kids, you'd be totally for her. Your values are screwed up. You're sad people. Liars.

May 27, 2006 6:19 PM

King Arrogant,

You love your doctors. Woohoo! It's great that we have doctors, but they are usually no better than anybody else. Most came from families with money that bought them years and years of a great education. I'd rather nominate a doctor who faced incredible odds and went on to accomplish something great. But first and foremost, tell me about his character, because that is where it's at.

I know from personal experience that many doctors enter the profession for the very things you criticize Oprah Winfrey for. Overall, I don't like them as a group. I worked at a top hospital in the country and know what goes on behind the scenes, which is often in contrast to what the public views. We need great doctors for good health, but as people, their values leave a lot to be desired. Things were different years ago. Most doctors have an enormous ego. Unbelievable. They plan their lives from a place of arrogance. They want the money and the prestige. They have to get the wife and the 2 kids because it really looks good. With their busy schedule, you'd think they would have plenty to keep them busy. Many regularly cheat on their wives. You don't need to argue with me on this. I have seen plenty of bad examples. Working in that hospital burst my idyllic bubble. I will never again respect doctors the way most people do. Sorry Charlie.

May 27, 2006 6:54 PM

TKBJ:
Have someone read "Mountains Beyond Mountains" to you and it will change your opinions of doctors.

KAINCD:
Your stunning ignorance is the best possible indictment for the prolonged effects of watching Oprah's show. The point isn't whether Oprah Winfrey is a good person - I'm sure she is. The point (you complete f-ing idiot) is the criteria for the Nobel Peace prize make the suggestion of Oprah's Winfrey's name at once both hilarious and sickeningly sad.

May 27, 2006 9:59 PM

Did you read a word I said, or are you blind as well as dumb?

I will NEVER change my mind about doctors, unless God does a miracle and mass zaps most of them with true compassion. So don't hold your breath. Did I hit a sensitive spot? Are you a doctor? From a family of doctors? Ughhhh! Most doctors used to get into the profession for the right reasons. Family doctors made house calls. We can't go back in time. Overall, only a senseless ninny believes that life is going back to the innocence and goodness of the past. The world and many of its people are growing more and more evil and false. Doctors are no different. Not all of anything is bad, but I have met enough doctors (at one of the very top medical centers in the country) to know that they are some of the most arrogant, prideful snots there are.

Okay, don't give Oprah the Nobel Prize. I really don't care. But just because she may not deserve the honor doesn't mean you throw out the baby with the bath water. Don't sit there with your smugness and discount her good deeds. You sound like a complete idiot when you do that because most of her fans know about the great things she has done. We can overlook your silly little criticisms. They hold no weight.

May 28, 2006 9:05 AM

Scanning these comments--Countrybabe's sounded odd--Oprah may be jealous of the rest of us because she doesn't have things that matter--kids and a family. If Oprah really wanted to she could have married and had kids a long time ago. In fact, Oprah gave birth to a child when she was a teenager, but the child died. Everybody has a different definition of success. I think Oprah is living her wildest dreams. She is reaping the wonderful sense of satisfaction that comes from hard work that has paid off. It must be nice to be able to have a lot of money and power to do the things you want. I'd love to be in her shoes.

May 28, 2006 2:12 PM

I thought the Nobel Prize was for people who had overcome great odds to make the world a better place. If so, then Oprah, who has overcome extreme poverty, sexual abuse, racism, sexism, obesity, teen pregnancy, and a drug habbit, and climbed out of all of that to have given a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS of her OWN MONEY and raised TENS OF MILLIONS MORE for the long-term investment of educating third-world girls most certainly qualifies, especially when you consider that she acquired her wealth by hosting one of the most educational shows on TV and pioneered the use of electronic media to make literature (Tolstoy, Faulkner, Elie Wiesel) accessible to the masses and uses her show to create all kinds of visibility for underrepresented minorities like gays (Nate Berkus) Asians (Lisa Ling)and black authors (Toni Morrison).

I agree that unlike some Nobel prize winners, Oprah never put her life on the line, but than neither did Jimmy Carter and he won the Nobel prize. The fact of the matter is that I can't think of anyone else in world history who has come from so little to have given so much as Oprah, and unlike other winners, her contributions are not a matter of opinion, but can be measure OBJECTIVELY through dollars and cents.

May 29, 2006 12:17 AM

I used to like Oprah. But as the expression goes, money and power corrupts. As she has power and money has increased so has her ego. I could list a litany of examples but won't waste my time. She already thinks she has the power to choose our next president. As to the money she "gives" it is call tax deductions as well as other people's money. Her magazine is just a way to write off her parties , etc. her livestyle that is profiled in "her magazine". As was her latest special ....

Angelina gives a third of her annual income to charity. Ted Turner has given a billion dollars to Unicef yet few know about it and that does not include all the money given to other charities.. We know about Oprah because she makes sure to let everyone know about it. No I am not jealous; I just do not tolerate arrogant and sanctimonious individuals regardless of who they are.

If Oprah wins it it will go a long way to devalue the Nobel Price.

It appears to me that Oprah makes sure that word gets out just how much she gives to her causes. I saw her once bragging about how much of her "personal money" she gave for Hurricane Katrina. Yes, Oprah does some really good things and I think it's wonderful that she promotes charities and gives to those less fortunate. It would be much more wonderful if she didn't toot her own horn so much. She promotes herself at every opportunity. There are others more humble who give more. I really don't understand the idol-worshipping that goes on with Oprah--her minions scamper out to buy and do whatever she tells them to buy and do. It's kinda scary, I think. Rich and, yes, Generous Self-Aggrandizing Television Star--Yes! Nobel Peace Prize Winner--No Way!

May 29, 2006 4:11 PM

This is clearly a case of Oprah fans versus non-Oprah fans. (sigh)

Did you really like Oprah? How much? A wee bit. Tell the truth. I can't see a "true" fan turning against her, unless you knew her personally and the two of you had a falling out. A true fan cannot help overlooking her small faults.

There are times that Oprah says things that are out of line, but she's human. If your husband did it, you would forgive him because he is your man and hopefully, even though he makes mistakes sometimes, he is a good man.

I have heard preachers say things that left people saying, "Did that just come out of his mouth?" He's not a bad or phony preacher. It doesn't happen constantly, but once in a while he might say an odd thing or two, maybe something inappropriate. It happens a lot when a person is constantly in front of an audience. To err is human.

Oprah is busy with her daily show. She shares so much of her life with the world. She comes into our homes nearly each and every single day. Our relationship with her is more constant. There is more feedback. She has her own magazine and makes her views known. We see her house, her friends, her dogs, her man. Other actors (no one in particular) do a movie, make a ton of money, attend a premiere, and take off for a year or two and travel and get involved in lots of causes. We can't even touch them. All we do is imagine how fantastic they are, because we only get tiny bits and parts of them, a snapshot here, an interview there.

As for people being full of themselves, that alone I can handle, because they usually are insecure. It comes from a painful source. What I can't bear are those who brag and boast and are just plain wicked people (e.g., those darn doctors I mentioned earlier).

This is what I have noticed about human nature: When people have been really low or abused or on drugs, etc, and they turn their lives around, they sometimes go to the opposite extreme.

This man was dirty, homeless and walking the streets. He was a drug addict and alcoholic. When he got cleaned up, he became Mr. Clean to the extreme. His clothes had to be new. He showered 3 times a day, and he even started jogging. It was almost like a compulsion to do everything the opposite of what he did before. He was trying to make himself feel clean because he used to be so dirty.

I see a little of that in Oprah and instead of getting angry (probably because I like her), I understand. I think that Oprah has suffered enough in life and that she has overcome a lot of her past, but deep down she's not "completely" healed. She's constantly a work in progress and this is evident by her continual battles with her weight. And sometimes, you sense her still telling herself that she is "enough." Many of us struggle with issues from our pasts for our entire lives.

I don't care about a little bragging from anyone. When people do that, you know they are a little insecure. What I care about is people boosting themselves and bashing someone else at the same time. Or, someone trying to get ahead by stepping on toes. They don't care who they hurt. It's all about character. You must have integrity. Good acts are just good acts and many have false motives.

I don't care what Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie or any of the super rich people like Bill Gates do. They could give away all of their fortunes if they wanted to. It's not about the money. What is Oprah's motivation for doing all these good works?"

The answer to that is that she "genuinely" cares. She also knows it's the right thing to do. She has discovered that to "give is better than to receive," and she keeps wanting to do more and more. Love her or hate her, Oprah's heart is in the right place. So, I love her. I admire her. I don't worship her. I don't even subscribe to her magazine. All celebrities have their share of fanatics, so on that point, Oprah is not alone.

May 29, 2006 5:08 PM

I just wanted to add that there are other black billionaires. Like Michael Lee-Chin of Canada and Robert L. Johnson founder of BET.

May 29, 2006 7:41 PM

The Kings Ransom:
Very nice post. My point is not that Oprah is a bad person - she isn't. As a celebrity goes, she's great. But to think that that is somehow justification for a Nobel Peace prize is just sick.

May 29, 2006 9:40 PM

Actually according to Forbes magazine, Oprah's been the world's ONLY black billionaire for the past 3 years. Robert Johnson is no longer considered a billionaire by Forbes because following his divorce, Forbes reported his ex-wife acquired half his wealth.

Michael-Lee Chin is not black, he's Blasian. While he has some African genes, he is also half Chinese and Chinese populations are the most far removed from Africans as one can be. Overall Blasians are genetically no closer to Africans than Europeans are.

And while some of Oprah's charity is tax deductable, even compared to other billionaires, Oprah has given an enormous amount. She's the 235th richest American, and yet she's the 32 most generous.

If people are too jealous or too racist to wish her a Nobel prize, then that's thier problem, but name me one other person in world history who has come from so little to have given as much money as Oprah.

What did Jimmy Carter do to deserve a Nobel Prize that trumps Oprah overcoming EXTREME poverty and sexual abuse to give a QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS to progressive causes?

Lots of celebs talk the talk, but Oprah's the ONLY Hollywood celeb to rank among Business Week's 50 Most generous Americans.

And I don't find Oprah toots her own horn (on TV she documents the charity of her audience, not her own which is TEN TIMES greater)

And you don't think other Nobel prize winners promote themselves? Get real. And so what if they do. People who do good things deserve good publicity, and this encourages others to give more in the future.

May 30, 2006 7:56 AM

You just don't get it. The Nobel Peace Prize isn't awarded based on who can write the biggest check or who overcame the greatest adversity to get their own TV show. Oprah is very popular and she can give money generously. That's great. That doesn't put her in the same league as Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, the Dalai Lama or Aung San Suu Kyi.

If the prize was awarded based on writing big checks, Bill Gates will win it years before Oprah ever would.

May 30, 2006 10:43 AM

I'm with KSI on this one. Just because Oprah has written some checks and has some charity doesn't make her worthy of the prize. Puhleez. You want to give the Nobel Peace Prize to a woman who donates a tiny fraction of her income (she makes so much money it would be like me donating a penny! Until she is giving a SUBSTANTIAL amount of her income to charitable causes I could care less.), talks about tossing salads on tv with her best buddy Gayle, gives away sweaters, jeans and Pontiacs, and holds a Legends Ball to honor women who've.......I don't know what they are being honored for exactly, being famous I guess? KSI is exactly right. The prize should be going to people who are putting their own lives on the line to help others. Oprah's sitting on her fat ass eating bon bons and getting pedicures while she sends her minions to do her charity work. Give me a f*cking break people!!!!?!?!?!?! And calling out the Hermes guy on her show? Making him apologize for not letting her in? Oh yes, that's definitely prize worthy. The only thing that makes her worthy of is the "My head is too f*cking big to fit through any door" award. She needs to stick to what she's good at.....interviewing celebrities post break up (see Jen Aniston) or post nervous breakdown (see Tom Cruise). SHE DOES NOT DESERVE A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE!!!! And before you start jumping my shit for making a difference I donate 10% of my income to charity on a monthly basis....but I'm not asking for a Nobel Peace Prize, and neither is KSI.

To be clear, should I be offered the Nobel Peace Prize for my thankless work on this site, I would humbly accept.

You people spend way toooo much time on this web site fighting back and fourth why don't you all use that spare time you seem to have and do something that matters. GET A LIFE PEOPLE

Jennifer: I have the mental bandwith to do several things simultaneously. I can educate Oprah-worshipping posters while at the same time carrying out my (not inconsiderable) duties as Mayor of the City of New York.

I have enormous respect for Jimmy Carter, but could someone please explain to me why Jimmy Carter is worthy of a Nobel Prize, but Oprah, who climbed out of poverty, abuse, racism, and sexism, to give more of her OWN PERSONAL WEALTH to charity than any other black and any other Hollywood celeb in U.S. history, is not.

I understand that Oprah didn't put her life on the line, but than neither did Carter.

I understand that Oprah only has her influence because she's popular, but the same goes for Carter who also lived in luxury in the white house and from the millions he must have earned from speaking tours.

Both Oprah and Carter use their enormous influence to shed light on important issues and get others to give millions, but the difference between them is Oprah actually gave a QUARTER OF A BILLION of her OWN MONEY and yet Oprah is the unworthy one?

And while Oprah is very rich, she has given nearly a QUARTER of her ENTIRE NET WORTH to charity, and the reason Oprah can afford to give NINE FIGURES to charity is because she gave her TIME and ENERGY to acquire that wealth in the first place!

Why is a white male politician like Carter worthy of the prize but a black female talk show host who overcame poverty to invest HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of her HARD EARNED MONEY and inspired millions of others to give also, not worthy?

Can someone please answer that question!

1. Brokering the PEACE Agreement between Egypt and Israel?
2. Creating the Carter Center for dispute resolution to bring warring parties together to find PEACEFUL solutions?
3. Building countless houses for Habitat for Humanity with his own hands?
4. Travelling to some of the most God-forsaken places in the world (putting his life on the line)to ensure free and fair elections?

"Michael-Lee Chin is not black, he's Blasian. While he has some African genes, he is also half Chinese and Chinese populations are the most far removed from Africans as one can be. Overall Blasians are genetically no closer to Africans than Europeans are."

What is your point? He is still Black and he is still Chinese! So he is biracial, sucessful, and he is considered black by some people. What's the big deal. And by the way "blasian" is not a freaking word!

On a lighter note: regarding the photo of O at the top of this discourse--I think it's interesting that a woman worth this much money could not find a dress that fit her.

Blasian is indeed a word in that is is widely used and understood.

And anyone who knows anything about genetics knows that anyone who is half-Chinese is NOT black.

Humans started in Africa, but those who migrated to Europe and the Middle East lost most of their black traits as they transformed into Caucasians.

However the few Caucasians who went to North East Asia to become Oriental lost almost all of their black traits and are the most genetically distant from blacks of all humans.

Thus a Caucasaian on the genetic level is little more than an African in the process of becoming an Oriental. Thus they are part way between both extremes, just like Blasians.

Thus Blasians are no closer to blacks than Europeans are.

Sick of her mug on the cover of EVERY magazine. Yes, she rose from poverty, recovered from rape (how many million people have done that?), but she is not a psychologist, therapist, aribiter of great taste, in short, she is a very smart, very ambitious woman who worked hard to get to where she is. She makes some nice donations to charities, but she makes a darn nice living doing just that. The give-away shows do not come out of her pocket. How about honoring some real heros in this country instead of celebrities, people say like teachers who have our future in their hands everyday in the classroom, single moms who work hard every day for their children and do without so that their children may eat and have a roof over their heads, social workers who recieve little pay but do it because they want to help the world, ministers who truly love the Creator, however you percieve him/her and inspire their congregations, volunteers who do for others with no expectation of repayment, scientist who find the treatment and cures for disease. These are the real heroes in our world, not overpaid, overindulged sports and movie/television stars who play or pretend for a living.

ALL I KNOW IS ...I LOVE OPRAH!!!
KYA UNG MGA INSECURE KY OPRAH...SHUT UP NLANG KEI..?? WAG NLNG KAU MANIRA NG IBA TAO..! m(..)m

I love Oprah!!! She has done soooo... much to help the world from helping children with aids to just being in the world!! I love her and she is totally my role model!!! She has crated a great connection with people everywere!!! GO OPREH YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
