The Honey Brothers (pictured above, and yes that is Adrian Grenier from Entourage) bring to the music scene a unique sound that combines the Shins, Weezer, and the Grateful Dead into one band. They are definitely a group to keep your eye on! The Honey Brothers tour throughout the US, hitting hotspots such as the Bowery Ballroom in NYC, Knitting Factory in LA, and many more. They even preformed at the Hurricane Katrina Benefit in Miami! To hear The Honey Brothers, click here, or visit www.honeybrothers.com. You won't be disappointed. Our very own Christina Sciarrillo had a chance to interview Andrew Vladeck aka Dorian Honey.
Christina: Give me an introduction to the history/background of the Honey Brothers.
Dory Honey: The Honey Brothers happened by accident. We would stumble around with ukulele's on hot summer nights and sing for people wherever... we were asked to play a gig and then a residency and so on and so on.
CS: How would you describe your music?
DH: Appalachian Glam Rock
CS: Who were/are your major influences?
DH: Lou Reed, The Cars, The Band, Talking Heads, Bowie, Dylan, Beatles
CS: What inspires your song writing?
DH: Bad jokes and current events. Which are often the same thing.
CS: What was the first record you bought?
DH: The Best of Blondie.
More of The Honey Brothers, after the jump.
CS: First musical memory?
DH: My folks had an old jukebox ~ you'd have to wait 10 minutes for the tubes to warm up. I think I wore out Buddy Holly's "Everyday."
CS: What level of notoriety do you want THB to achieve?
DH: Enough to be able to record and tour more - but not so much that we're on a box of cereal...or a milk carton
CS: Professionally, what did you do prior to forming the band, and what do you do now outside of the band?
DH: I used to be a New York City Urban Park Ranger - and now I tour solo when The Honey Brothers aren't gigging. www.andrewvladeck.com.
CS: Where is the coolest place you've played?
DH: There's nothing really cooler than playing on street corners... you just can't get more "street". And that's how we started - those were our first gigs.
CS: What is your favorite/least favorite moment as a band?
DH: When my brother Hoyt Honey had that wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl. But really, how was he to know the clown suit would tear?
CS: How do you feel about music in the Internet age? Do you guys have any strong opinions about the prevalence of music downloading and sharing?
DH: It's great to have much more exposure. As for downloads, the opportunities often outweigh the downside. Besides, you can't fight city hall - sharing is genarally a good thing. We're taught to do it in kindergarten. the trick is to figure out how to harness all that energy.
CS: What do you think about the popular music scene, particularly Britney Spears, Nick Lachey, and the like?
DH: Is Britney Spears a musician? Oh, right. Honestly, still think "Oops I Did It Again" is freaking hilarious.
