LA Weekly's Deadline Hollywood Daily has been working overtime on the Mel Gibson scandal, and the latest twist in the now infamous actor/director's downward spiral is that he was on the verge of suicide when he was arrested last Friday on suspicion of drinking and driving.
DHD's source, an individual closely involved in the Gibson debacle, reveals the following:
"No one's really asking questions about his state of mind. That's why he was driving around 90 miles an hour. This was a death wish. If that cop hadn't stopped him, this guy was going to be wrapped around a pole. This is such a bigger issue than 'Will he work again?' This is about his not wanting to live anymore. I've seen what he's gone through and what he's going through. You have to understand the disease of alcoholism. He was back in it. There's no doubt in my mind he was trying to kill himself that night." As for his anti-Semitic slurs during his DUI arrest, I'm told that Gibson doesn't remember saying them. "Why? He had alcoholic blackout syndrome. I don't know a lot about it. I've not had a lot of experience with it. He has some recollection of parts of the evenings. But he's not denying he said those things, and if anything he's owning up to it. But nobody could verify it. Not even he or his lawyers have seen the police report yet."
Holy Whitney Houston, this is tragic! In all seriousness, I hope Mel can get the help he needs to move forward with his life and try to piece it all together now that his alcoholism seems to have spun wildly out of control.
And, in all filthy, gossipy decadence, I at least hope he's generous to give us a few more noteworthy incidents before he manages to get back on course.
I'm so going to hell for that.

As Christopher Hitchens just pointed out on the BBC, Fleet Street (UK) journalists have spilt more than Mel Gibson had drunk the other night. He was just over what was is a very low limit; the limit is as it should be, but he wasn't very drunk. I think he thinks what he said.

Enough with this story already!

1. Mel Gibson is a lifelong drinker (so he says).
2. He was incredibly belligerent and slurring his speech.
You can blow a .12% after having 3 beers. I sincerely doubt 3 beers would make a lifelong drinker behave this way. Either (a) the .12% is a lie and it was actually much higher or (b) he was on other things besides alcohol. A lifelong drinker would've held his liquor better than this--especially at .12%.

Clarification: 3 beers in a 1-2 hour period, depending on weight, height, etc. You get the picture though.

& it only takes an hour to metabolise a unit of alcohol. All this could be only be wrong if there was another alteration to his blood chemistry, something which deters him from drinking, or if his blood is naturally high in alcohol.
