Jean Paul Gaultier's Response to the Skinny Model Debate

Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier found his own way to comment on the 'size zero' debate - by putting a larger model down the catwalk to show off his clothes.

Dressed in a daring black corsetry, the plus-sized model dwarfed her fellow waif-like catwalk queens.

He could have made an even bigger sized (no pun intended) statement if he had used all plus sized models.

Don't you think he is actually making the statement, "See how shitty these clothes look on fat people?? NOW will you let me use the skinny models???" at least that's how I interpreted it... And for the record use whatever kind of models you want to show off your clothes... all that matters in the real world is what real people think and NO ONE thinks the Nicole Richie look is hot.

Personally, I think that the majority of designers aren't able to design for a normal female body - ie one that has curves. Either they don't know how, or they simply are incapable of doing so.

Dressing curves takes skill and these people obviously don't have what it takes.

Not all women are very curvy. There are actually some women who are naturally thin and who don't gain weight that easily.

this is just not right. you dont have to use size zero models. no. but you dont have to go around using a size 20 model! you are making the wrong statement. you are now saying that it is ok to used people who a blaitently over weiggt to model your clothes. the average size for women in the UK is like a size 12/14. not zero, and not 20. why not use average size women. or even better, use a variety od different sized and shaped people. you are surely then going to make the right statement.

This is absolutely ridiculous, and I don't think he made the right point. Now he just gave two unhealthy images. It's not healthy to be as big as the girl he used and it's also not healthy to be as small as those other girls. I don't beleive that talk "Well some girls are 5'9" and are naturaly skinny" That is true, but it doesn't happen as often as there are anorexic and bulemic models out there. By making a stupid statement like this completely makes the designer look like an idiot. Excuse me, but useing obviously overweight and obviously underweight models doesn't say anything. Models should of course, should show an image of beauty, and HEALTHY, women who eat healthy and exercise a bit should have a nice shape. Be real now, no one thinks Jean Paul is a genius for what he did.

I don't think this is one of the best statements a designer could've made ever! But i'm glad that this woman has had the guts to walk the catwalk with confidence and show that you don't have to look like a skelinton to wear these clothes confidently! Plus size woman look better than all these woman that starve themselves to be clothes hangers!

Hands up to this woman!

But maybe designers should consider using average size woman, woman who represent the large population of the world!

He definitely could have picked a more attractive plus-sized model. What is up with the hair? And she either must be short or have zero muscle because even for a 20, that looks awful.
