When asked about her opinion on drinking during pregnancy, Oscar-winning actress, Rachel Weisz admitted that she thought a little bit here and there was kosher. Details from The Daily Mail:

The 35-year-old, who recently gave birth to her first child, said she thought it was "fine" for expectant mothers to have a glass of wine after the first three months. British-born Miss Weisz added: "I mean in Europe they drink it". Her comments, which were made while she promoted her latest movie The Fountain, were immediately criticised by medical experts who described them as "ill-informed" and "dangerous". The Government is currently reviewing guidelines on drinking alcohol when pregnant after experts warned that even very small amounts could result in Foetal Alcohol Syndrome which can lead to learning difficulties, poor co-ordination and attention deficit disorder. Current UK guidelines say pregnant women can drink one or two units, the equivalent to one or two small glasses of wine or single measures of spirit, once or twice a week. In the US and Canada complete abstinence from drinking is advised for expectant mothers.
Now, I'm completely confused. I thought drinking was how one got pregnant in the first place.

Americans always get so up-in-arms about having the occasional drink while you're pregnant. Pregnant women enjoying a glass of wine are looked at as if they were in a squat house shooting heroin. It's plain ridiculous. Think about all the women that never even knew they were pregnant until they were two or three months along. If you don't know you're pregnant, and not trying, you would drink the amount you always do. And almost of those babies were probably born just fine.

Yes, and these are the same uptight ones that don't see any problem with only eating salads the whole time or carrying a Red Bull everywhere they go.

Unbelievable! People need to mind their own GD business... when I was pregnant I had massive cravings for beer. My doc said it was perfectly fine in moderation. We Americans have become a country of complete morons.

Can we please not start with the whole "American" thing. I think it was the Daily Mail, a British paper, that ran with this and started the stink. Not everyone in America is the same. Not everyone in the UK is the same. Not everyone anywhere is exactly the same. Unless you experience a people and culture for yourself, you really can't express an opinion. You are just regurgitating another persons thoughts.

I don't even think it is the "American's" fault anymore. It is the god damned media beast that can not leave anything alone. We Americans are very well educated. It is the media that is, or likes to pretend to be about a hundred years behind on just about everything. I mean seriously two actors can not even date for like two weeks and they have them getting married and divorced, and finding new partners and having babies and so on. Imagine when they open their mouths and say something like Rachael did. Soon they'll be burning her at the Thstake just like Madonna for adopting. And fortunately the British media makes our media look a bit tamer, I think. Then again maybe I don't read enough tabloids.

I don't get the whole stink about drinking a couple glass of wine while pregnant. It's not like she said "yeah its ok to get stinkin' drunk twice a week".....get a grip medical people!

I'm sorry, but I tend to think society is getting crazier and crazier about what you can and can't have anymore. Our mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers didn't have these warnings and you know what? THEY DRANK, SMOKED and did whatever they wanted while pregnant and everyone turned out just fine. Why is everything so different all of the sudden? Is it more dangerous to drink a little glass of wine, or smoke a cigarette, NOW and it wasn't THEN? My mom smoked throughout all three of her pregnancies...my oldest brother was born normal weight, my other brother was born HUGE and I was born normal. OK, so tell me how we were affected by it? Smoking supposedly causes low birth weight.
