I'm going to be honest with you guys--after about the first thirty minutes of an awards show, I'm usually tipsy, irritable and ready for bed. But, since I knew I had to pay attention for work, I steeled myself against the inevitable antsy feeling that would overtake me the minute Tom Hanks' giant orange gourd of a head first appeared on screen. And honestly, it's really all just a blur of shiny dresses and tuxedos and since I'm really bad at remembering things in chronological order, I'm just going to give you random little snippets of what I thought were some of the most memorable moments on stage for the TV winners.
I think I first really started paying attention once Jeremy Irons won his award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
And OMG, guys--and I do mean OMG in all caps.
Aside from his outfit, which looked like a hand-me-down from Mozart himself, Mr. Irons radiated about as much health as a man suffering from chronic tuberculosis. Upon stepping on stage, he very efficiently made his way to Miss Golden Globe (Jack Nicholson's daughter, Lorraine Nicholson reprising the role of probably the best anthropomorphic display of the term "Hollywood nepotism") and stole a kiss from the young lass, bringing to mind his role in "Lolita," after which he delivered a wonderfully rambling speech that ended with a confusing, if not enthusiastic shout-out to his girl, Helen Mirren. His bizarre appearance and speech aside, I think he's a wonderful actor and kudos, Jeremy. Now, go chug a protein shake and get some rest.

The next award, I remember was when Emily Blunt was announced as the winner for the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Miss Blunt, who endeared herself to me forever as Meryl Streep's vicious first assistant to Anne Hathaway's doe-eyed assistant-in-training in "The Devil Wears Prada," picked up a Golden Globe for her work in "Gideon's Crossing," [CORRECTION] "Gideon's Daughter," a production which sounds extremely respectable and one which I've seen about ten times less than "Glitter." (That means zero.) She gave a holla to her co-star, Bill Nighy, and I totally dated myself when I initially assumed she was referring to Bill Nye, The Science Guy, (Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!) believing that maybe her appreciation of his friendship stemmed from his patient explanation to her of how a steam engine works.
Not to be outdone, Bill Nighy also picked up an award for "Gideon's Crossing," [CORRECTION] "Gideon's Daughter,"--Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television--leading me to suspect that a British accent might be a pre-requisite for a Golden Globe in 2007. Damn British, coming in and taking our jobs. These are the aliens Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to be focusing on as governor, for Pete's sake.
OK, I remember now that Kyra Sedgwick won Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Drama for her role in "The Closer," which I've never seen. Also, I'm not particularly familiar with Kyra in general, so I'm going to have to just reach for what's at her arm's reach--namely, her husband Kevin Bacon. Is it just me, or is the man not really aging so much as simply changing his hairstyle?
Hugh Laurie of "House" won for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Drama and was pretty funny for part of his speech, stating:
"I know everyone says they have a wonderful crew and certainly that can't be the case. We can't all be wonderful. Somebody somewhere is working with a crew of drunken thieves. But it's not me."Alec Baldwin won for his role on "30 Rock "for Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy, which had me all excited since I've actually seen the show and that in itself is an award, my friends. Any time someone can work a reference to their hernia operation in a speech, kudos is deserved.
Also, "Elizabeth I" won for Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television and Helen Mirren picked up the Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her performance in the film. And for those of you without the benefit of TiVo or Moxy, it looks like Helen might have accidentally been sporting some butt cleavage when she went onstage to accept her award.
But the acceptance speech that is probably going to be the most talked-about comes from my personal fave, America Ferrera (whose table was hands-down sporting the best cleavage in the entire room), who was awarded Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series - Musical Or Comedy for her role in "Ugly Betty." Her tearful acceptance speech touched the heart of even this Grinch-like creature, however, I do have to admit that the quick montage of teary-eyed actresses following America's speech--ending with an emotional Jada Pinkett Smith--did kind of seem wonderfully produced and silly.
And can we just discuss for a moment how incredibly painful that post-speech interchange America was forced to endure with awkward Maria Menounos was? Yikes. I was waiting for her to ask America, "So, seriously, how do you think I look in this dress? No. Seriously. Answer me."
"Ugly Betty" also garnered the award of Best Television Series - Musical Or Comedy and "Grey's Anatomy" went home with the drama counterpart of that honor. OMG, you guys. This is like one of the longest things I've ever had to write for ASL. I'm so damn lazy. This is why Jay has to do all of the recaps--and why it's going to stay that way.
And once again, I went home emtpy-handed. Sigh. Until then, would you mind signing my petition to get blogging included as a category?
