Starpulse reports that Angelina feels the leader of the free world gives Americans a bad name.

Angelina Jolie has hit out at President George W. Bush, accusing him of turning the world against America. Jolie, who spends much of her time traveling the world helping the poor as an ambassador for the United Nations, insists her work has become harder since Bush was re-elected - because no-one she meets can understand why Americans voted for him.

She says, "When I travel, people feel uncomfortable when I say I'm American. They think it's suspicious that I want to do something positive for them. I think they wonder why the American people re-elected a President who is making foreign policy choices that are affecting other countries in a way that we should question."


Considering the drubbing I took for being a "liberal queen" the last time I ventured a political opinion, I'm going to stay mum on this one. But Angie better not mind her mail being opened without her consent in the future. I'm just sayin'!

Although, I totally agree with Angelina, shouldn't she be flogged along side the Dixie Chicks for such thoughts? Yea, I know, Homeland Security is probably tapping my phones and looking thru my mail too....what is a girl to do!?!?!?!

I am so SICK and TIRED of hearing about Angela, reading about Angela, and everyone gushing about Angela! She is nothing but a tattoed, freaky homewrecker. She is GROSS, and I could care less about what these liberal, pansy actors think about our President, who thank goodness, is our President, otherwise, we may not have our freedom!!

Freedom? Are you talking about the freedom to keep our phones from being tapped without good reason decided by a judge? Or perhaps about the freedom granted by habeus corpus, currently suspended for SOME people? You're not talking about freedom there, buddy...it's only freedom when everyone is free. Our president wouldn't know actual freedom if it slapped him on the back of the thighs with a hairbrush.

I voted for George W. both elections. However, I do NOT agree with many of the things happening now. Still, I would again vote for George before Gore or Kerry. I travel extensively for business, mostly western Europe. If Western Europe had their way, Bill Clinton would STILL be president! So I understand and agree what Angie is saying. People abroad do NOT understand this presidency, but neither do a lot of Americans. I agree that the comments made by The Dixie Chicks merit severe public flogging, and Alec Baldwin & Cher are more than welcome to go live in any other country in the world if it will cease their incessant yakking. I don't really think that Angie said anything as poorly or as trashily as The Dixie Chicks. Statements made by the Dixie Chicks were just plain crude; I'll never again purchase one of their cd's or attend one of their concerts. Angie simply stated facts. And remember, she is traveling to countries where not many but the rich and elite are literate, let alone well educated. These people are living with suspicions of their own governments; they grow up and live govourned by the corrupt. Which is probably a function of their attitude towards the US as well. That said, I still Whorelina is a predatory bitch... Drop dead Beautiful, but a predatory bitch.

No need to panic. Angelina is stating a perspective held by some non-Americans and judging from what I hear from friends living outside the country, her comments are spot on.

That said, enough of the condemnation for Angelina. The reason the press brings her up all the time is that people get all riled up by the mention of her name for completely lame reasons thus helping magazine sales and celebrity blog hits. Perhaps if people quit reacting to her being mentioned, you wouldn't hear so much about her. Geez. Despite her flaws (she never claimed to be perfect), she has a good heart and is trying to help make the world a better place. Hate and ridicule are better aimed at pointless people like Paris Hilton.

Angelina Jolie, like most Americans, is clueless about what it takes to run a country. She thinks her looks and her Hollywood status entitle her to criticize at will. Personally, I don't like her morals or her arrogance. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

To what foreign policy decisions is Ms. Jolie referring? Is she speaking with the corrupt third-world coutry leaders who would love more U.S. aid so they can further oppress their people?

And I don't see why people would question her altruism (if it really is that) just because she is an American. Whether it is a disaster in Nebraska or Nepal, American relief organizations staffed by private Americans (usually volunteers)are always at the forefront of disaster relief. In addition, how many millions of dollars were donated by Americans for tsunami relief?

Sounds like Angelina is just making a generalized statement that could come out of the mouth of any Hollywood-type who feigns understanding of U.S. foreign policy.

As for the Dixie Chicks, people were upset because the remarks they made were on foreign soil. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw also criticized the President, but because they did so in the U.S., their was no movement to boycott their albums.

I don't agree with everything the President does, but I think that people like Jolie dislike him more for his social views, more than his foreign policy. But because she so disagrees with him socially, even if he did do something she agreed with, she wouldn't acknowledge it.

I hope the work she is doing is positive, but if she wants to criticize political body, maybe she should take a look at the organization for which she works. The U.N. isn't exactly known for its humanitarian triumphs (Rwanda, anyone?)


Well, as a European living in US I cried when Dubya was reelected. You know what people in Europe think of Americans because they reelected Dubya? They think anyone with a little brain in their head wouldn't vote for a president who can't speak, is actually a puppet and had screwed American Economy more than most presidents.

And yes if it were upto Europeans and most democrats here Clinton would still be the president.

I can't even date a republican because I'd like to have the freedom of doing what I want with my body, my mind, my children etc. The "freedom" you think Dubya is giving you is nothing other then putting the fear in Americans so they'd vote for him.

Open your eyes. Try watching BBC or any other international news organization. Google news, CNN etc. always give one sided news. And don't even get me started on FOX!

Angelina just stating facts. It's gotten dangerous to be an American traveling abroad. I applied for another passport because I qualify to be a dual national, frankly I know I will be safer when I travel oversees again.

I can't believe that god talking to freak was re elected. I don't actually believe he was... Anyone who stands by the president is anti american.

S_M_G - I agree with you, Angelina is a humanitarian; her heart is in the right place in reference to her efforts. She is using her celebrity to help people, and those actions alone, should be recognized for what they are. She was simply exercisng her freedom of speech when she made those statements. And again, I agree with what she said. May we ask "why" are you living here in The USA, if you're so unhappy with our government, and as a generalization, you think that Americans are so ill informed? You know you are free to go back to your motherland any time. I don't mean to be rude, because you are a visitor to our country, but if things are so bad, and we are so ill informed, why are you still here? And, reality check: Bill Gates IS the richest man in the world, a billionaire many times over. I'm sure he did give more to the tsunami relief fund than GWB, or anyone else for that matter. Well the government doesn't really affect me. I am not a citizen and I go to grad school here so I don't have the worries of losing my job because of the economy etc.

All my friends are American and I love them. I was just trying to give the point of view of people outside the US.

As soon as I graduate I'll go back home but I'll visit US at least once a year. I love America I just don't like the way the government works. I hate that the money for research decreased tramendously(sp?) since Dubya took the office. I hate that I can't buy alcohol on a sunday etc.

I come to Socialite's life because J. Harvey is funny and I don't have to think about politics. I don't even know why I put my two cents in, but I will add that I am not sure why S_M_G thinks our economy here is so bad just because some funding was cut. The economy in the U.S. is much stronger than the stagnant economies of France and Germany. They are beautiful countries, but socialistic tendencies have crippled their industries. We must be doing something right, or people wouldn't keep coming here.


And when I spoke of American philanthropy, I meant the everyday Joe, the blue collar workers, who contributes a higher percentage of his income to charity than does the average middle class person.

Finally, how can the U.N. be so peace loving and humanitarian when it has member countries that have solid histories of oppression and corruption? And, yes, I do keep up to date on what they are doing. I don't get my news from movies. I read and don't bother watching T.V. because they are too busy getting ratings by covering the last mom who killed her children (or husband who killed his pregnant wife.....)
Any large body, whether government, NGO, the U.N., whatever, that has a near limitless budget is rife with corruption. I agree that Jolie and Pitt put their $$ where their mouths are, but the U.N. is not our savior and neither the U.S., nor our president, is evil incarnate!

-the point is not whether our economy is stronger than some particular other countries. The point it our country is weakened by Bush's tax policies and out of control spending, particulary in Iraq. Yes, we have a strong economy but it is not made of teflon. That strong economy isn't caused by Bush and, in fact, he isn't helping.
-it isn't ok that Bush has cut funding for research. Research funding is actually a pretty small part of the budget, but an important part because the US succeed when we are innovative. We innovate when we 1.) feel free enough 2.) are well educated enough 3.) have the funds to do so. BTW, the President is interfered with all three of these needs. Our educational system was broken long before came into office but requiring schools to test w/No Child Left Behind and then not providing the funding to support it cripples the schools. They have to test so they have to make budget cuts elsewhere.

No place is perfect, no government, no organization. But I hold my country, the USA, to a higher standard because it is mine and I care about it. And this last President has lead us astray in so many ways.

My second response........ You are a grad student, attending a school here, because it must have a benefit or advantage that the schools in your home country don't have. You are a guest in this country. and I truly hope you feel welcome and comfortable, and yet you are making some rather critical statements about your host country and it's people. I attended university in a European country too, and I wouldn't dream of criticising the government while there. If you're not paying taxes or not voting, you have NO right to bitch. Even now, when I travel for business, which is very often, I wouldn't dream of going into a country and criticise the government to it's subjects. . It's just not a good thing to criticise a gracious host. And I'm sure The USA is gracious, or you and tens of thousands of others would not continue arriving on our shores to attend our schools and LIVE in our society. And please don't stop arriving to attend our schools.. Hopefully the interaction between citizens of the world will help all of us to understand each other better and live together.

State laws determine whether or not you can buy alcohol on Sunday, not the president.

The second line there just makes you appear to not be very bright. Many people voted to re-elect Bush because he was the lesser of the two evils that we had the choose from in that election.

I have to say that you are utterly wrong in this statement. One of the most patriotic things an American can do is serve in the US Armed Forces. My husband and I are both more proud to serve under Comander in Chief Bush than we ever have been to serve before. We finally have a president that is not afraid to take action to protect the lives of his county's citizens. I do not agree with everything the man does/says, but you have to give him credit for having his heart in the right place when it comes to the American people.

You appear to be quite anti-American since you won't even use your American passport to travel. If you are so ashamed to be from our country maybe you should reconsider your citizenship here.

Everyone: I currently reside in Germany and have had many legnthy conversations with my neighbors and friends about what exactly they think about us and our decision to re-elect Bush. Most of them are older (45+) and none have ever said they felt that we are stupid for that decision. Many of them said that they assumed we did it because we needed someone who would do what it takes to protect Americans at home and abroad. They said that they would see things in the news over here while Clinton was in office that proved that he was not willing to take measures to stop/prevent terrorism, possibly because he was afraid of what it would do to his popularity. So, they prove that not ALL people outside of America think we are idiots or made the wrong decision.

I agree that this president and congress have made poor choices when it has come to spending. It is hard to believe they even cut research since govt. spending has increased faster under this administration more than any other. I also agree about the state of our schools, but no amount of funding from the federal government is going to improve them. The education system functions best with local control and when the community is involved. As for funding for research, it isn't the government's job to fund innovation; in fact, it usually does a pretty poor job of it. It is the small businesses and entrepreneuers who fuel this economy. If the research is valid and important, it will find funding.
I agree that we should hold our government to a higher standard, and our society. Just as an example, I live in the Midwest where we have had some terrible ice storms this past week and we are set to get snow this weekend. It has been great to see neighbors helping neighbors. I would rather see that than have FEMA come in and throw money at the problem. My point is, yes, it is important to keep our government in check, but we should hold ourselves as citizens accountable also. I have been impressed with the last several posts. No degrading remarks or personal attack; just civilized discourse.

Unfortunately not true. It is very important for the government to fund innovation. True that some important innovation is funded by companies. Drugs, human genome (partially) are two good examples. But generally companies can only fund research that they think will make a profit over next couple of years. Government funding allows the US to 1.) research important ideas that require more time to develop 2.) to do higher risk research that keeps us ahead of others and 2.) to address the many many important things that companies will not ever research because there is not profit there. This includes all medical research that is not about developing new drugs, devices or other profitable dohickies. Over our history, many important innovations have been funded by government such as many vaccines including polio vaccine, basic quantum computing research that lead to the development of computers, and much of the research into power/energy (though this is less true today than previously.) Currently we are funding LESS than other developed countries, which is very unusual historically and really bad.

First, Angelina needs to address the UN's raping of children and women in the Congo and Haiti in exchange for food. Then I may listen to any word that comes out of this spoiled woman's mouth. Until then, this home wrecker can STFU.

As for the rest of the world, who is the first country you all look to for help? It is not Europe.
The US spent more on Tsunami relief than Bill Gates. What navy and helicopters did he provide.

A Ph.D is not that hard to do in most of today's educational environment, what with grade inflation and all. Fund your own research, instead of expecting me to fund it.

Things are OK except for the war in IRAQ. Iraq is obviously about oil so anyone that uses oil products should really just STFU unless they can create fission.

She's right - people in some countries she travels in will be suspicious of her being American. The advice is often to say you're Canadian. America's agressive foreign policy upsets a lot of the rest of the world. Angelina has been very careful about choosing her words - saying it makes her work harder and other people suspicious, not commenting directly herself on Bush as a person or other policies. Whatever you think of George Bush or American foreign policy, this is 100% true. People are more suspicious of America, Americans and their motives nowadays.

1/3 of people in PhD's are from abroad, what with the problems with our educational system and all. And grades are not even close to the key issue for acceptance into a first rate PhD program. MCATs, research experience, publications, recommendations, and ability to think are far more important.

The US last year spent 0.4% of our tax dollars on funding ALL of our research projects through NASA, NIH, NIMH, DOD, NSF etc. The US MAKES substantial money on this investment because this research creates patentsthat businesses can then grow around. Businesses CAN'T do this early work because it is too high-risk and takes too much time.

Here are some government funded projects that made money indirectly because businesses could later take them over
-The understanding of the structure and properties of DNA opened up totally new opportunities to address health issues and provided the basis for the vibrant new biotechnology industry.
-Polymer and photochemical research led to the creation of photoresists that are key to the success of the microelectronics industry, which accounts for well over a quarter of a million jobs in the U. S. today.
-The atomic clock, which was based on research in atomic physics and was stimulated by needs in astronomy, provided a foundation for the development of the Global Positioning System to satisfy a critical defense need. More recently, it is creating a large commercial marketplace for everything from ships to backpackers.

There have been some very valid points made in the comments left here, and unfortunately some really stupid typical lefty blathering with no connection to common sense which is so widespread among the uninformed left worldwide. Watching TV news and reading newspapers does not keep one informed of current issues. It keeps one abreast of what the one-sided mainstream media wants to you hear.

The main reason Bush was re-elected was because the most important thing to US citizens is protection against fanatical terrorists. The other choice for president is totally clueless. This is easily determined if one does some homework on what Kerry supposedly stands for (which changes constantly). It is also an awful shame that the best the left in America could come up with was John Kerry. By no means has Bush made decisions I always agree with. He's human, has made mistakes and he admits to them. The fact that people think the current president is stupid only tells us how ignorant the person saying it is. Yes, he's not an elegant speaker. Yes, he has goofy facial expressions sometimes. We all do. But George Bush is a genuine individual. Ask any of the staff, secret service and armed forces that have served around him. Then go ahead and ask those same groups of people the same questions about the Clintons and see what differing responses you get.

Islamic fanatics want to take over the world and force sharia law upon everyone on the planet. They will stop at nothing in their quest for world dominance. This activity centers in the arab countries in the middle east. The current administration has taken the war on terror to their doorstep. Would any of you rather conduct the war against the terrorists here in the US?

The Iraq war is not about oil. The US has not taken any oil profits at all from Iraq.

I admit that I am not knowledgeable of all government funding and research. I know there are some things that the private sector won't fund and many great things have come from government research and testing. I just think that we have a very bloated and obese government and there is a lot of wastefulness. Yes, funding for certain research is necessary, but I am sure our govt. is also funding a lot of trivial/pork barrel research as well. Thanks for the information though. It is nice to see a list of good things that have been created.

I think like a lot of people, I don't think this country is perfect, I'm not a Bush fan, and I think the government has made a lot of staggering mistakes over the years, but I still love this country.

To Pip - Dear, that's the whole point. We're AMERICAN. And yes, we all realize that Canadians, Mexicans, and all Central and South Americans are Americans too. It's the rest of the world that refers to the citizens of the USA as "American". So I'm sorry to all of our good neighbors to the north and to the south, but let's just not go to that argument.

The point is, I'm damned proud to be "American", and from the previous posts, I'm not alone. Whether we agree or disagree, which is our hard earned right, we still have that freedom. My personal belief is that when I'm out there traveling to different countries, it's my opportunity to show other nationalities just how good, caring, and well informed Americans truly are. And there have been many, many conversations I've had in which other nationalities reflect that "as people" they like Americans. They just don't necessarily understand or agree with our President. If we all claimed to be Canadian - only the Canadians would be out making good impressions on the rest of the world.

Most importantly, for centuries people have fought and died for our right to call ourselves "American". Not Canadian because we may be nervous of how we're treated abroad, but American. To do otherwise would be just shameful.

This site receives hits from all over the world, and with that forum, I'd like to say to anyone in our Armed Forces who happens to be reading this, a very sincere Thank You. This FREE AMERICAN, for one, appreciates your services.

first of all: i love americans, your boldness is unique.

however, the only people in this world that don't know the real reason behind 9/11 are the hateful bush's americans. the rest of the world understands that the pushiness of the u.s. in world politics is the real reason.

regarding the countrys of the middle-east: everyone is sick and tired of american tyranny over the oil. these people should be left alone with their resources to dispose of as they please.

i'm icelandic. we are extremely peaceful. we don't have an army, cops don't carry guns. there was a u.s. base here after WWII ended but it was a complete waste of money and time, so they left. we are educated and worldly. we travel, study and live abroad if we want to. we don't hate anyone.

i do not agree with everything my governmet does, but i do not have to fear the hate of my fellow citizens because of it. i feel bad for the enlightend people of america, they truly live in a diffucult time.

Of course Iceland is peaceful with no army, America has done the heavy lifting for the Western world since WWII. Under our guns, Europe has provided butter for its people. With our money, we rebuilt the Continent. You have peace because my grandfather came over there and defeated Hitler, then kept the USSR from conquering the rest of Europe.
One can be peaceful when they are being protected from cradle to grave by another country. Don't like our policies? Then pay us back and pay your own way.
As for the Middle East, controlling their own oil would be a nice goal, however killing women rape victims and hanging gay people seem to be more important to them. See Iran for this.
Europe is dying off because their non-religious views is causing them to not have babies. When the welfare state starts to fall apart, then the European blood will start to run again. See 4000 years of history. Then you will be begging America to come bail you out again. And we will, because we are America. And 60 years later, it will be forgotten in an orgy of self-righteous anti-Americanism. Again.

the u.s. didn't take part in WWII until pearl harbour. it was a question of us og them. of course we are very grateful but it's been 60 years and i think it's time we move on because we have new problems do deal with because of everything else.

i should also mention that communism was never a threat to us and it wasn't beacause of the u.s. troops. it was because there is a great differene between the culture, language and politics of eastern, western and southern europe. we are not one country. europe is a lot more diverse than americans tend to think. (i have lived in the states - therefore i know)

about the social issues of the middle-east: yes, they are horrifying. i just don't think war will fix anything. rather than spending money on war why not spend it on education and aid for the people in need instead of antagonizing them by taking over their countries and ruining their land. why not teach people to love instead of hate - maybe you consider that hippie-ish or non-religious of me, i just think it's a better way to live.

i do not consider it help when someone pushes me across a street, i'd rather be walked in a friendly manner.

Fearful? Angry? No, just engaging in a healthy debate with someone who has to project their stereotypes onto others.
As for the population decline, it is happening and they are starting campaigns on encouraging women to have children again in places like Germany and France. The BBC and World Population Center have both run specials on the graying of Europe.

It is hard to teach radical Muslims how to love when they hate the feminine side of their population. Their mistake was attacking America, and we defended ourselves and got them fighting in the Middle East. The Muslim countries incubated this movement, now they can deal with it on their doorsteps. Harsh, cold? It is reality. They started this war by attacking us, and we fight back. Stability under Saddam was not peace, but oppression. Iraq is a strategic place to have troops in the middle east, and Iran, a prime sponsor of terrorism is surrounded. Military tactics, 101.

Iceland is not a communist country because communism was defeated. It wasn't a choice you made. The USSR was stopped from overrunning Europe. It is easy to spout platitudes of peace when your population isn't being targeted for death. The fall of communism was less than 20 years ago, but the passage of time makes it easy to forget how oppressive communism was for Eastern Europe. I still don't think Europe should be lecturing America on anything, ever again. They don't have to even pay for their defense, because we do it for them.

I like Iceland, but until they anti up in the Great Game, I will not listen to their views.Why should I?

The passage of 60 years does NOT merit forgetting the past. 300,000 of Americans died protecting the USA, and protecting 70 countries around the world. And yes, you're right, the US didn't enter WWII until Pearl Harbour. And obviously, remembering the early morning surprise bombling of Pearl Harbour, we did not enter willingly, we were pulled in. But the USA sent nearly 300,000 of our best around the world that never came home. I've searched for the number of Icelandic lives lost, and I can not find a numeration.

The US rebuilt Europe, just like we will rebuild Iraq and several other countries over there. Just like we're currently building countries in the Middle East. I know, because the company I work for is selling our product there, rebuilding the infrastructure.

It would be another utopia, a worldwide utopia if we all lived in peace. If we could avoid conflicts and war by simply sitting down and talking, by "teaching". But those views are so, so, so, "idealistic".... Not at all reality.

You can say our media is feeding us lies. Say whatever you want. But you can not refute fact and history. And, you know to whom your country will ultimately turn when your human liberties and freedoms are threatened. And once again, just like the rest of Europe, the small and weak, (Serbia / Yugoslavia, Iraq) the US will step in to save lives because The United Nations would rather talk, teach, negotiate, allow hundreds of thousands to be murdered, raped and tortured, to continue to throw money at a ruthless dictator than have the balls to step up and just take care of the problem.

There has been, and still remains, an Joint Military base in Iceland (since 1941.) It's called NAS Keflavik. The number of U.S. troops stationed has been reduced over the past couple of years but thousands of our people are still in place; and they appear to be wasting their time in your country since you are all so perfect, worldy and peaceful. The only reason we are stil in your coutry is because after we planned to remove our interceptors in 2003 YOUR COUNTRY OBJECTED! We worked out a new deal, agreeing to leave out assets in place until the end of last year since your government wanted/needed the time to replace our assets and personnel with those of the Icelandic Coast Guard.
The reason you don't have an army is because an army is pointless for an island of that size. If you ever have to fight a ground was on your own territory you have already lost.
It's quite naive and shows us what a delusional idealist you are when you state that "we travel, study and live abroad if we want to. we don't hate anyone." Umm... Americans also travel, study abroad, and live abroad. So, how does that make you a superior culture? I highly douth that no one in your country hates anyone. It's just not possible.

your comments are strange. hitler was certainly not a communist. he was a nazi, mussolini was a fasist and, belive it or not, america, england, france and the ussr worked together to end the war. one of the main reasons the war was won was the battle of stalingrad. look it up on wikipedia. the us didn't have a problem with communism until after the war. what you will find out if you read about the war is that hitler and stalin had a peace deal in the early stages of the war but hitler betrayed stalin thus lost the war eventually. when the war ended us and ussr troops divided ruined europe. ussr dealt with the eastern hitler had conquered, u.s. dealt with western europe. two treaties were made, the separation of europe started and so on, and so on - STUDY HISTORY!

Ia can say that since I have spent time volunteering in Africa, served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and donate part of my income to charitites in the U.S. and abroad.

Your tenacity is commendable. Hopefully all Icelanders are as tenacious as you are. Particularly if you demand the US presence out of your country, and others abroad, you and others are going to need such strength and tenacity to protect yourselves.

If there are EVER two words ubiquitously synonymous with one another they are "Communist Russia".

Yes, I'm quite aware that after WWII the US and the USSR divied up Europe. That is why Western Europe was rebuilt, democracies & republics flourished and Eastern Europe was left to rot with communism. That is why the standard of living was - and continues to be so much higher in the western countries than in the eastern countries (considered The Soviet East Block"). I know, I've been there, I've seen with my own eyes the decay and oppression of these "east block countries"; These countries which now, thank heavens, are catching up with the rest of Europe, but for decades were generations behind. Some STILL are generations behind. I've been to the other side of the wall, while it stood, I've seen for myself; and I"ll tell you what, it' wasn't a pretty sight.

Now tell me. If the spoils of war line had been drawn further to the west than it was to the east, can you STILL argue that "Western Europe was never under threat of communism"? If the USSR, a legendary communist state, had received all of Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, etc., in this division of the spoils of war, instead of the USA, can you STILL argue that there was never a threat of communism in Western Europe? Western Europe was lucky the line was drawn where it was drawn and the USSR was not responsible for them. I believe you made the point for me, thank you very much.

EUROPE - THY NAME IS COWARDICE (Commentary by Mathias Dapfner CEO, Axel Springer, AG)

A few days ago Henry Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, "Europe - your family name is appeasement." It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true.

Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements.

Appeasement legitimized and stabilized Communism in the Soviet Union, then East Germany, then all the rest of Eastern Europe where for decades, inhuman, suppressive, murderous governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.

Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo, and even though we had absolute proof of ongoing mass-murder, we Europeans debated and debated and debated, and were still debating when finally the Americans had to come from halfway around the world, into Europe yet again, and do our work for us.

Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East, European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word "equidistance," now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians.

Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore nearly 500,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace-movement, has the gall to issue bad grades to George Bush... Even as it is uncovered that the loudest critics of the American action in Iraq made illicit billions, no, TENS of billions, in the corrupt U.N. Oil-for-Food program.

And now we are faced with a particularly grotesque form of appeasement... How is Germany reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere? By suggesting that we really should have a "Muslim Holiday" in Germany.

I wish I were joking, but I am not. A substantial fraction of our (German) Government, and if the polls are to be believed, the German people, actually believe that creating an Official State "Muslim Holiday" will somehow spare us from the wrath of the fanatical Islamists.

One cannot help but recall Britain's Neville Chamberlain waving the laughable treaty signed by Adolf Hitler, and declaring European "Peace in our time".

What else has to happen before the European public and its political leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims, focused on civilians, directed against our free, open Western societies, and intent upon Western Civilization's utter destruction.

It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than any of the great military conflicts of the last century - a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be tamed by "tolerance" and "accommodation" but is actually spurred on by such gestures, which have proven to be, and will always be taken by the Islamists for signs of weakness.

Only two recent American Presidents had the courage needed for anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush.

His American critics may quibble over the details, but we Europeans know the truth. We saw it first hand: Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War, freeing half of the German people from nearly 50 years of terror and virtual slavery. And Bush, supported only by the Social Democrat Blair, acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic War against democracy. His place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have passed.

In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the multicultural corner, instead of defending liberal society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true great powers, America and China.

On the contrary - we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to those "arrogant Americans", as the World Champions of "tolerance", which even (Germany's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes. Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic, so devoid of a moral compass.

For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt, and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy - because unlike almost all of Europe, Bush realizes what is at stake - literally everything.

While we criticize the "capitalistic robber barons" of America because they seem too sure of their priorities, we timidly defend our Social Welfare systems. Stay out of it! It could get expensive! We'd rather discuss reducing our 35-hour workweek or our dental coverage, or our 4 weeks of paid vacation... Or listen to TV pastors preach about the need to "reach out to terrorists. To understand and forgive".

These days, Europe reminds me of an old woman who, with shaking hands, frantically hides her last pieces of jewelry when she notices a robber breaking into a neighbor's house.

Appeasement? Europe, thy name is Cowardice.
