My Hero is Forever Free

It is without snark and a tear in my eye that I regretfully have found out the my favorite actor John Inman has passed away today.

Many people probably don't have a clue as to who John Inman was. Especially the American readers. He was one of the talented stars of British comedy series, "Are You Being Served?" Mr Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries came alive as John played his character as though somewhere out there the real Mr. Humphries existed behind a sales counter. His ambiguously gay character was enthralling and captured your heart. His catchphrase "I'm free!" became a staple in pop culture. The department store-based series ended in 1985 after 13 years of laugh out loud humor. John's talents extended beyond the sitcom and reached into the theater as well.

At the age of 71, John passed away today at St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington London. He had long been ill with Hepatitis A. His costar, Wendy Richard, visited him often and regards his passing as "being an end to his physical suffering."

He is one of the few actors I found to be brilliant and a master of the craft. Talent of his caliber is precious these days. He will be dearly missed.

"I just want you to know that we're all on the roof and we're not coming down until our demands have been satisfied!"- John Inman

My mother and I would always bet on what color Mrs. Slocombe's hair would be in each episode.

I think I lost a little bit of my childhood today.
I love that show. Do you remember the episode when they had the beauty contest,or the one when they did the radio show, and the one where they where trying turn floor into a nightclub and had to shoot a commercial for it.
ahh Good times.

OMG NO! Mr. Humphries!
My grandmother and I used to watch this show together. She taped every last episode off our local PBS channel so she could have them all and watch whenever she wanted. She passed away late last year. She gave me her tapes.
Okay, I'm incredibly sad now.
RIP, Mr. Humphries.

Thank you for posting this - one of many reasons I love this blog so much.

p.s. I SO remember the beauty contest chrischris! I'm going back to watch it now. :)

I really am impressed I am not the only person out there that loves "Are You Being Served?" I still watch it and I am proud to say that I own the box set. I loved the beauty contest episode! My all time favorite would be the episode when the store is robbed and they dress up as the Gumby Gang. Mrs. Slocombe dressed as Mad Ma and Mr. Humphries was Italian Tony. LMAO!!! I will miss him. Thanks for the great comments. You all are wonderful! I move for "Are You Being Served?" Mondays. An episode post every Monday to pay respect to my favorite show. Too much?

I have watched that show basically my whole life (My mom is from England, and we always watched that show on PBS)... He will be missed!!

"Are You Being Served?" is one of the funniest shows ever! I often borrow Mr. Humphrey's "Men's wear." And I laugh every time. :)

Loved that show and loved his
character. A real sweetheart and
deliciously funny.

i read this site all the time and have never commented but feel compelled to do so now. i was truly saddened to hear about John Inman's passing. i loved "are you being served?" my husband and i always watched it in college and after we were married, it was a sunday night tradition. he was like an old friend that came by for a hilarious visit every week. i am so glad that so many here loved him too. may he now know the extent of the joy he brought to so many. rest in peace and God bless, Mr. Inman, you surely deserve it.

I'm so sad. If it weren't for Are You Being Served I couldn't go through with working every day at Nordstrom. My boyfriend and I are honestly grieving now.

I'd just started watching this on BBC America and Mr. Humphries was by far my favorite character. Kind of random i came across this so i figured i'd comment...
RIP

I love "Are You Being Served?" And Mr. Humphries was the best! It's nice to see that so many other people liked him too. RIP

That is so sad. He was so wonderful. The local pbs stations should definately do Are You being served? Marathons this weekend.

Are You Being Served reruns are still being showed in the US. I have been watching this show for years. He was a wonderful actor and will surely be missed. RIP Mr. Humphries/Inman.

March 9, 2007 10:13 AM

That is a damn shame. 'Are You Being Served' is a program that makes me laugh out loud whenever I watch, even if I've seen the episode a few times. Mr. Humphries was the bomb. Rest in Peace.

I am happy to hear so many others loved him as an actor too :) I thought I was one of the few Americans who watched PBS and Are You Being Served? regularly! I grew up watching Britcoms and this is one of the best (with Keeping Up Appearances)....I am sad to hear that "Mr Humphries" has died but he will be fondly remembered...

I still watch the show on reruns. He was a great actor playing a great part. He will be missed.

March 9, 2007 10:52 AM

So sad, I still watch that show with my parents when I go home to visit. RIP you delightful, delightful man - you brought so much joy to my l'il ol' household.

March 9, 2007 11:18 AM

Thanks from the bottom of my heart for posting this. My husband and I are from America and for years we lived to watch Are You Being Served? During some dark days in our marriage Mr. Inman's swish and Mrs. Slocombe's pussy were the only things we could laugh at together. Fond memroies and a fond farewell!!

March 9, 2007 12:36 PM

I read about this yesterday and had a good cry. I've loved the show since I ran across it on PBS in the 1980's. Mr. Humphries was the best! I thought he carried it forward wonderfully in Are you being served Again?

Awww! I used to love to watch him on Are you being served?

March 9, 2007 12:52 PM

He was the scene-stealer in a great show. My condolences go out to his family.

I also loved to watch "Are You Being Served?" on PBS back in college and law school. I perked up every time I heard the opening music to the show.

All the cast was hilarious and Inman was my favorite. (Well, Inman and Wendy Richard. Miss Shirley Brahms was hawt.)

Mr. Humphries will definitely be missed. Viva Grace Brothers.

Bye Bye Mr. Humphries

xxoo

As a child who grew up with no cable tv, I am quite familer with Mr. Humphries. A PBS staple along with other great British shows like Ab Fab, Red Dwarf & Faulty Towers. Today is a sad day. =(

March 9, 2007 1:56 PM

Well atleast we have PBS so we can watch him for eternity.
God Bless his family.

March 9, 2007 6:21 PM

Although I live in the U.S., I have been a fan of "Are You Being Served?" for many years and introduced it to other family members who also enjoy it. It is indeed sad to note the passing of John Inman who did an inimitable job as Mr. Humphries. It's hard to imagine anyone else in that role. He will be missed.

I had no idea that he had died. He is one of my favorite characters on AYBS. It's a tie between he and the lady that always talks about her pussy. LMAO. The reruns still come on PBS here every Sunday night. So, I watch it every Sunday without fail.
