PETA Calls Michael Moore a Fattie

PETA president, Ingrid Newkirk, has issued a letter to Michael Moore, challenging him to lose weight on a thirty day vegetarian diet. What prompted this sudden intervention? Well, Newkirk was inspired by Moore's latest film, "SiCKO," an in-depth look at the American health care industry. Believing prevention to be the most effective antidote to sickness, Newkirk claims that Moore's weight could easily be diminished (effectively cutting his risk for various ailments) and she attests this should be done through a vegetarian diet.

"Although we think that your film could actually help reform America's sorely inadequate health care system, there's an elephant in the room, and it is you. With all due respect, no one can help but notice that a weighty health issue is affecting you personally. We'd like to help you fix that."
Now, I know that PETA is trying to be helpful in this situation, but dang, that's the kind of letter that would make me want to slit my throat. Remind me never to do an documentary on the plastic surgery industry.

PETA are worse than Michael Moore, who the hell do they think they are?? Ingrid's probably a total fat ass, too.

SO TRUE! Michael Moore disparages everything about the United States, but he certainly takes full advantage of everything it has to offer, including flowing food, drink and media power! This guy is a big, FAT hypocrite! Maybe his next film should be called FATSO and we can look into the lives of all the gluttons in the world!

June 26, 2007 4:20 PM

Yeah, I think that fat tub of goo should get in shape before he starts commentings on anything even remotely relating to health issues.

Ah, good to see PETA has lurkers on the board for this story already.

June 26, 2007 4:36 PM

Just to play devil's advocate here, but why does someone's point of view have to match what they look like on the outside? People *do* actually have weight issues not relating to overeating or poor exercise. Not that MM is necessarily in this pool of people, but who knows what meds he takes or diseases/disorders he has?

I haven't seen his documentary yet, but I do find it in poor taste that people think he shouldn't be allowed to talk about our screwed up health care industry, because he's fat. Who cares? Is SICKO about fat people? I was under the impression it was about red tape and politics within healthcare, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know.

He's seriously annoying to me, too, but I still think it's wrong to say he can't make a certain documentary because he's not a walking billboard for whatever it is. Everyone knows health care is a mess. Even fat people. Give me a major break. And Peta's just looking for free publicity. They are like Candy Spelling with their little missiles around town. Michael Moore is probably shoving an eclair in his mouth while reading their letter. And they better watch out, hope they are up for the fight. He might come after them next.

June 26, 2007 4:37 PM

Good to see that Michael Moore has lurkers out here as well.

June 26, 2007 4:38 PM

LOL Mel

So she likens him to an elephant, then continues with "with all due respect..." Uh, there was no respect there. This hippy facist salad eatin whore oughtta mind her own damn business. Amen.

June 26, 2007 4:41 PM

Oh he can talk all he wants, genevieve83. He has every right. But guess what? Everyone else has a right to call him on his total hypocrisy too. Here's the thing -- when you go blabbing to the entire world about what you believe, your backyard better be pretty darn clean!

June 26, 2007 4:55 PM

Just because someone "goes blabbing" doesn't justify making fun of fat people when it's completely unrelated. Seriously, what is this? The playground?

PETA have been lying to the public for years and "blabbing" constantly. I'd much rather see someone insult and humiliate them.

June 26, 2007 5:01 PM

I'm not making fun of fat people, Caroline, just big-mouth, hypocritical, attention-seeking, money-grabbing, socialist supporting, one-sided story giving, power-hungry, blame everyone else, lying FAT people!

Did any of you see him promoting "Sicko" on Bill Maher a couple weeks ago? He's already lost a good bit of weight, spurred by what he saw in the making of this film. That kind of weight loss takes time...he'll get there.

June 26, 2007 5:17 PM

He can lose all the weight he wants and he's still a hypocritical, attention-seeking, money-grabbing, socialist supporting, one-sided story giving, power-hungry, blame everyone else, lying, antagonistic nut!

Before he goes slamming the US health care system, maybe he should do the fair thing and report what health care is like around the world. Even Canada is considering bowing out of the nationalized health care bit.

ChristopherM, I saw the same Bill Maher a while back. He definitely admitted that he felt like a bit of a hypocrite because of his weight problem. I think it takes some balls to go on national television and admit that you're obese, a hypocrite, and that you're trying to do something about it. For the record, I'm not a huge Micheal Moore fan, but I gotta give him credit where credit is due.

June 26, 2007 5:28 PM

I find it incredibly amusing when someone like Michael Moore minimizes the health care issue so much as to insinuate that it's an easy problem to fix. It isn't. If it were, there would be perfect Michael Moore health care systems around the globe. Everything comes with a f-ing price, people. What are you willing to pay to have a nationalized health care plan?

I also find it amusing that he shows ONE SIDE OF EVERY Issue and you people fall for it. Research the other side before supporting this fool.

June 26, 2007 6:39 PM

Ha ha, T-Bone, I think I love you!!!

I think is crap that we pay all of this money into our medical and then sit there and deny treatment people need. They are not Doctors. They are a bunch of greedy pencil pushers. They could care less if people die. I like the documentaries that MM has made.

Oh and you don't have to go vegitarian to loose weight. You can loose weight while still eating meats.

June 26, 2007 7:25 PM

LOL - too much. I think some of the more illiterate amongst us misunderstood me to be a Michael Moore supporter. Or maybe - just maybe - the prospect of starting a little tiff on the comments section is just too juicy to pass up.

Sorry, but hanging around to post the worn out "look who's the hidden supporter!" comment and the name calling is pretty pathetic. If you can't debate like an adult, then take your immature ass to Perez Hilton's site. He loves flamers like the two of you. I can give you a pointer or two, however. How about you actually read and comprehend someone's words and then think about your reply. It's a winning combo.

All idiocy aside, T-bone, I don't see where anyone on these comments have been "fooled" or fallen for MM's rantings. I haven't even seen the doc, which I clearly pointed out. And sorry, but my brother has been wrapped up in the red tape of health care in THIS COUNTRY, and it has been a total nightmare. So, I'll go ahead and stay with my whole description of our "messed up" health care system in this country. I do find it incredibly messed up and frustrating. Alternatives? I haven't gotten that far. I'm not actually "researching" any other sides before supporting any fool.

But you go right ahead. I'm all ears for the solution, which you imply to have. And I'll be sure to relay that back to my paralyzed brother, as well. I know he'll be chock full of bubbles knowing that we have it all figured out, and he'll see it in his lifetime.

You know what? No, I don't agree. But I respect your point of view anyway. I'd appreciate the same from the adults in the crowd.

June 26, 2007 11:20 PM

Ditto to genevieve83 and GiGi. SICKO isn't about obesity, it's about how our health care system is failing those in need. I've seen the film already and Michael Moore never claims that there is an easy solution.

Why does us PETA say that Michael Moore is fat. We also have eyes....

If PETA says Michael Moore are going to make a diet (Trim Plan) - it would be very funny.

I love how T-Bone slams MM and Angelina Jolie for being attention seeking whores and yet seems to seek a fair bit of attention for him/herself on this blog.

Michael Moore does without fail present a one-sided argument in his documentaries but they are still effective...they make the viewers think, argue and come out of their protective bubbles perhaps long enough to maybe, just maybe look for answers. We are all great at pointing out what's wrong and not so great at offering (realistic) solutions. I don't agree with Moore's tactics-he comes off as a pompous a**hole but, I do respect him for having the balls to put what he believes in out there...it's more than most of us do. When I watch his documentaries, I watch knowing that there is another side, knowing that he takes things out of context to make his point...I suspect many others do the same.

June 27, 2007 10:37 AM

Zekers - Exactly! You watch and listen, but know there's another side to the story. That's the difference between you and most Michael Moore fans.

genevieve83 - First let me say that I'm sorry that your brother is experiencing "red tape" in this country. That sucks. No one should have to wait for health care. But I stand firm -- anyone who claims there is an easy answer to some our most intricate issues is lying to you. We have problems in this country. It's not a perfect set-up. But we live in a capitalistic democracy, and from an actual "freedom" perspective, that's about the best there is. My feeling is that health care needs to be addressed on a state-by-state basis and NOT via our federal government, which is what people like Hillary Clinton would like to do. The federal government, I'm sorry to say, can't even balance the budget nor take care of our hard-earned social security. You really want these people running your healthcare, while you pay in about 60% of your earnings into taxes? I think not. genevieve83 -- I do not purport to know how to fix things. I'm simply saying do not ever believe one side of anything until you've researched what the other side might be. Michael Moore ALWAYS represents ONE side of the issue. He counts on impressionable people to believe ONLY what he says. Irresponsible! I wish I had the money to create a newspaper that addressed all sides of every issue, logically, so that people can REALLY make better decisions. Perhaps one day there will be such a publication. But for now, just know that most of the blogs you read, or papers you read, have a one-sided slant. It is rare indeed that you get all sides of an issue presented to you.

I work for one of the best health plans in the country. We are nationally recognized for being progressive, fair, NON-PROFIT, ethical and consumer-driven. We are busting our butts to cover everyone. Our CEO is extremely honest and has the respect of our entire state (which by the way is not only THE top state for health care, but also one of the best for cost-effective coverage). And this is what she just sent us about Michael Moore's movie:

Re: Documentary on health care

"As you might have heard, Michael Moore's new movie, Sicko, is about health care and it is scheduled for a nationwide release on June 29, 2007. In our state (leave out) the Council of Health Plans will respond to any media questions about the film. I wanted to let you know BLANK's point of view on some of the issues raised in the film. These might also be useful to you in talking with your friends, neighbors or family:

Making health care more affordable and providing coverage for everyone are absolutely the right things to focus on. BLANK was the first plan in to publicly support coverage for all. We believe that dismantling our health care system to create a government run, single payer system is the wrong way to achieve that goal.

We support achieving coverage for all in the next two years by building on the non-profit, public-private partnership that's already in place in our state because this offers the most choices for consumers and patients. And we are committed to achieving coverage for all through supporting non-profit health care for the entire country.

While lawmakers, employers and health plans work to achieve coverage for all, BLANK is committed to providing care to everyone who needs it. Last year alone we provided charity care for 28,000 patients at BLANK Hospital and our Clinics.

Thank you for your support. Your partnership is much appreciated.

To Zekers,
Although Mr. Moore may have a slanted view on most of his films "Sicko" is different. Just go online ot any yahoo support group of any disease (cancer,ms, parkinson's, etc..). You will see that because these can be chronic conditions many health insurances will take people off of their coverage- but will keep the money. There are many people out there that need medications to not be sick or to be stable with their illness. But, the insurance company would rather tell them no because they save money. There is a health care crisis in this country and everyone knows it- but no one speaks up. It is not Mr. Moore's job to create a solution- he is just bringing more attention to the issue. It is supposed to be our governments job to create the soloution. But they are too embedded into the equation- i.e. making deals with drug companies, health insurance companies, etc.. and who looses out- the American people that is who. The only other side to SICKO is the sickos whom profit off of sick people and whom profit off of denying sick people the coverage, treatments, and medications they need.

June 27, 2007 12:56 PM

I agree Dnagerousd, when it comes to health insurance plans, they should all be NON-PROFITS. But they shouldn't go away. The system needs to be re-vamped on a state by state basis and we need to model the top, non-profit insurance companies in the country, but the government should NOT be involved in anything other than Medicare and Medical Assistance plans. Plans like United Health Care and Kaiser Permanenta' should be not be allowed to make billions on health care coverage and their CEOS should not be allowed to make 20 plus million a year. But again, they should be re-vamped, not destroyed.

June 27, 2007 2:14 PM

Dnagerousd, I will check out the site and the documentary ASAP. I'm not sure where you thought I was coming from because I'm on the same page as you are in this-with the exception that I agree with T-bone, the federal government needs to keep it's hands out of it. I also have to ask both of you: don't you think the problem has more tentacles? I mean it seems to me that a lot of the problem lies within malpractice costs and the drug companies. Doctors should not order a million unnecessary tests for someone's illness because they are afraid of being sued. Doctors shouldn't have to compromise their principals because they can't afford their malpractice insurance. I certainly don't look to Moore for answers anymore than I look to our federal government, I look to us, the people of this country to find answers...wish I could talk more with you both.

June 27, 2007 2:32 PM

Many, many tentacles, Zekers... And that's why I get upset with simplistic, one-sided rants from press-happy celebrities. They don't always know what they're talking about and they certainly don't research all sides of an issue. It seems irresponsible to direct the public in such a way. But he's not really looking to be a responsible player. He's trying to jolt the public into action by giving snippets of the worst case scenarios in the country. Bottom line, he wants the Republicans out of office, so he uses movies as his political vehicle. Scare tactics.

And you're right, law suits and malpractice insurance prices are high in this country, as well as pharmaceutical costs.

June 28, 2007 7:06 AM

You know T-bone, I'm not crazy about Moore's tactics-as I've already told you; but, he does "jolt" people into realizing that there is a problem, though it may not affect them personally. I think this country needs a "jolt" in many areas, we've become that "silent majority" that was so prevalent back in the 60's. It scares me to think what is coming down the pike for us if we don't wake up soon...
So, it sounds as though you have some good information regarding the health care system in the U.S.-care to point me to some good reads? I'm very interested...
