My boyfriend has a female pit. She's afraid of the vacuum cleaner, used to be afraid of lakes until we taught her how to swim, and is the sweetest dog I've ever seen. Seriously, pits can be aggressive but any dog raised that way can be aggressive.

Susan - PETA supports a ban on BREEDING pitbulls, because they were (in the beginning) a man-made breed created specifically for fighting purposes, and some have killed. In other words, HUMAN BEINGS made this breed for their own purposes. Now they're asking people to stop breeding for their own purposes, because they are not a "natural breed" and are being abused. PETA would never support the mistreatment of the dogs that are already here.

J, pitbulls are cute and cuddly. My friend, who's a vet, took in a two week old pitbull that was taken away from a breeder that fights them. He's over two years old now and he's the sweetest dog ever. He pushed me over while I sleep so he could sleep between my arms.

Although euthanasia is considered humane, do you not think killing animals simply b/c of their breed is cruel? At least give these animals a chance to be good. Sorry, my previous comment requires some clarity ...

After reading the letter referenced earlier, written by the president of PETA, I found that PETA supports the policy of animal shelters to systematically euthanize all pits entering the shelters. Ingrid does say that she supports the policy with reluctance, but nevertheless: that's support.

I was attacked by a rottweiler and have scars on my face from it, but I don't hate all rotties and think they should be systematically killed for the way they were raised.

I don't agree that all pitts should be euthanized. Animals that go into shelters should be fully evaluated on temperament and illness before any kind of euthanasia is done. They should not be automatically euthanized by breed. But I do agree with the breeding stance. MY personal perspective is such that we don't need to breed ANY MORE dogs -- all breeds. People -- there are millions upon millions of dogs and other animals out there without homes, medical care, food or love. We need to take care of what we have already. And since people are so ignorant about spaying and neutering their dogs, we're probably never going to have a shortage. Take care of what's here before breeding more "designer dogs" and dogs for personal use.

100% agreed. I not only own a rescue pit from a basement fighting organization, but I am a foster mom for the shelter in my hometown. I take 3-4 homeless dogs home every night, just so they can have a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and love in their hearts. There are so many great dogs out there that NEED your attention and love!!! STOP paying hundreds of dollars for dogs, and go pick one up for free!!!

The sad thing is that those 54 dogs found on his property will all be destroyed. Fighting dogs aren't allowed to be kept as pets. I wish they could be rehabilitated and given a new life, but I don't think that's going to happen. This guy has no conscience. The dog that I could do competition work with and the smartest dog I ever had came from the city pound. He was turned away by his breed's rescue because he had a tail and no one in rescue wanted this particular breed without a docked tail.

The sweetest dog I've had came from a breeder. And the sickest dog I've ever had - costing me in the multiple THOUSANDS in the short three years of his life -- came from a breeder with a great reputation.

Bottom line, it's a toss up. I've decided that the money paid for a purebred is not a good idea because they're so overbred (even in the ethical breeder world) they are creating all of these horrible genetic problems. It's rescue and shelter for me from now on.

We had a pit bull once, and he was very sweet, cute, cuddly, his best friend was our tiny tea-cup Taco Bell dog. What does Drunk Guy do? He starts barking at the dog, getting all stupid and just begging to be eaten. I think the perfect punishment for this Vick Dick is to put him in a cage with all his fighting dogs, after covering him in steak sauce.

I've seen, firsthand, what a brutal up-bringing does to these dogs. We adopted one from an animal rescue and took it on faith that the dog was okay-unfortunately this wasn't true. This dog-Chance was what the rescuers named him-was truly a wounded soul that we couldn't gain any trust with. He ended up cornering my young son and attempted to bite me. I wasn't angry, just really felt sorry for the poor fella and felt helpless that I couldn't get him to understand that he was safe. I was angry at the rescue agency though-they were real assholes about the whole thing, they came and got Chance ended up having him put down. It isn't the breed, it's what sub-human beings do to them-they are just reacting and trying to survive being tortured by someone they probably loved/trusted to begin with...sick sick sick. And Didi, don't you think maybe people become so outraged about these type of things simply because the animals are, for all practical purposes, at OUR mercy???

so many comments on this story! it sucks to hear about people mistreating animals. I especially agree with those of you who said that pit bulls can be great. it really does depend on the owner and how much time and effort they put into raising their puppy.

First of all, pit bulls actually are cute and cuddly. They make wondeful companions and are great with kids. UNLESS you breed them to fight. Those are the mean dogs you always hear about. They have been beat and starved and trained to fight and kill. A normal pit bull brought up with a loving family does not act this way. Period.

This disgusting pig of a thug, Michael Vick does not even deserve one bit of empathy. What a loser. Every single one of you needs to go to www.nike.com and let them know how you feel about their endorsement of this pig. Then let the NFL know. Time to demand that these pigs making millions of dollars are forced to behave like decent human beings, if not....throw them to the dogs.

Thanks for featuring this disgusting example of an asshole. I adopted a pit mix last year, and what I've learned about them is sooooo different than their undeserved reputation. Yah, when I read the part about him repeatedly slamming a dog against the ground to kill it, my tummy turned and all I can wonder is, how can someone so sick be so revered and popular. Why, because you can run and tackle people? Being that you are probably from the ghetto, I doubt these actions are something new to him.

We shouldn't forget that this is a human problem. There are a lot of gangsters in minority ghettos who fight dogs, but there are many poor whites who also participate in this cruel activity. I watched a program on TV in Nevada where whites were at fights between dogs and wild boars. It was unbelievable!

Generally speaking, animal abuse is more prevalent among poorer, low-classed people. Many are only concerned about their own personal situations and they harbor jealousy and hatred against other people. You don't expect them to care much about animals. They take their own small children to the fights.

I am always on the lookout to protect the vulnerable among us. My main concern is with innocent children and helpless animals. Education is key in stopping this cruelty.

I wish to add my voice to the outrage against Atlanta Falcons' Michael Vick and his unspeakably cruel treatment of animals. So much as been well expressed above, and I agree with everyone who has expressed their anger, sadness, shock and disbelief regarding Michael Vick, dogfighting, and all the cruelty surrounding the activity. I say a prayer that God will bless and care for the animals left in the wake of this tragedy, and that cruelty in this world will end, replaced by compassionate stewardship of all living beings.

It's just my thought, we need to turn our backs on him and everyone who might make money off of him. He's kicking back doing his proper time, i wish he got more. Vick is making money sitting inside and doing nothing. I would hope that the Falcons and their city, would not welcome Vick back with open arms. What kind of lesson would we be setting, if we pretend that Vick is cool to come back. The children who we raise, to love things in life, not to injure or hurt their animals, just show their love for all animals. The children need to know what's going on with their (hero). I as a parent, talked to my son about this, and he also agreed that it wasn't a cool thing to do. Vick isn't cool, was he ever really cool from the start ? In my life, i raised my son to know what is cool and what is not cool. I told my son that if it's a good thing, then it's cool, and if it's not cool then, don't deal with it. I and my son feel that Michael Vick, is not cool at all. I wonder how we can truely let our children understand these things, when they see news on tv saying that their "hero" is inside. Love for your family, love for your family pets. I think that we could let them not only show love for theirs, but to another fellow human, and to their pets also. Love that's it, that's cool ,and anything else is very uncool.
