If one had to pick their favorite gossip story of the last ten years, wouldn't it be when Winona got busted for boosting a few cute outfits in Saks Fifth Avenue while under the influence of several prescription drugs that she had accquired under a variety of aliases? Yeah, mine too! That was an obvious cry for help, like when Joan Allen took the lipstick in "The Ice Storm". Winona just wanted people to see the real Winona. Or she didn't want to pay the $300 for that blouse. And now she's finally talking about it!
"I didn't have this tremendous sense of guilt, because I hadn't hurt anyone," Ryder tells Vogue magazine for its August cover story. "Had I physically harmed someone or caused harm to a human being, I think it would have been an entirely different experience."
Uh, ok, but why did you do it?
Her personal reaction, she says, was "I never said a word. I didn't release a statement. I didn't do anything. I just waited for it to be over."

Sure we get it. But why did you do it? Maybe she'll explain what the hell she was thinking after the jump.
Still, she says, "The attention was what was embarrassing." She also expresses dismay that one day the news of her arrest topped stories on the supposed capture of Osama bin Laden.Yeah, that really illustrates how shallow Americans are, but uh, why did you do it?
Ryder - who was convicted of grand theft - explains that life had been bumpy for her just before the arrest. "Two months prior to that, I broke my arm in two places, and the doctor, a sort of quack doctor, was giving me a lot of stuff and I was taking it at first to get through the pain. And then there was this weird point when you don't know if you are in pain but you're taking it."So it was the drugs? Bitch, talk to us!
She said painkillers of the type she was on - such as Oxycodone, which should not be confused with OxyContin - left her in a state of "confusion," but that her arrest "in a very weird way, was a blessing, because I couldn't do that [painkillers] anymore."I promise not to confuse the Oxys. Ok, so she's blaming the drugs. Right? Am I reading this right? Keanu Reeves' British accent in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was clearer than this.

green cardigan says:
I love her since seeing her in Heathers. She's my all time favourite fruit cake actress. And it's true what she said, she didn't endanger anyone's life, like driving under the influence or backwards down a highway.
MardiGras says:
Maybe she didn't hurt anyone, but she did break the law. The fact that she doesn't think it's a big deal demonstrates something sadly lacking in her character.
rootabega says:
she makes me real depressed. if this happened now do you think it would have made her even more famous, ala Paris, Kate Moss? she looks like a carnie lately too.
starleen says:
Um, Oxycodone and Oxycontin are the same thing. Oxycontin is a brand name. Or is that sarcasm?
Jinxy McDeath says:
I didn't release a statement. I didn't do anything. I just waited for it to be over."
Much like Winona's career. She can't honestly think it didn't pretty much end her career, unless she's an idiot.
Also, I am on oxycodone right now and I am going shopping, but I always pay for what I get at the store, so blaming medication is rediculous - she's a cheesy thief and nothing more.
ak says:
And if she did actually physically injure someone, she'd have an excuse for that, too.
Me says:
Oxycodone and Oxycontin are NOT the same things...
You says:
Actually, starleen's right. Oxycontin IS a brand name for oxycodone. The name Oxycontin is derived from OXYcodone + CONTINuous release form.
Jonas the sailor says:
He who is without sin cast the first stone. Say what you will, I love her.

Nice woman
dawn says:
I know someone who used to sell vintage clothes at a flea market in LA. He said that Winona and a couple of other actresses used to steal his clothes all of the time. They'd go into the little dressing room and layer 'em up. That was before she broke her arm in two places.
Bart says:
Nice fake story dawn.
Sherry says:
She didn't hurt anyone? Whoa. She took scissors with her, cut off security tags, bought four items and walked out with 20 more, said when caught she was told by a director to pretend to steal for a movie role (it wasn't true). Pretty premeditated... not a random act of drug related forgetfulness.
Winona and her dad should be made aware that stealing is taking something that belongs to someone else and stealing from a company means higher prices for everyone else, they don't just eat cost of Winona's stealing out of the goodness of their hearts. You're welcome for the garments everyone else ended up paying for, chica.
OK, she's now officially in the Paris/Lindsay/Britters club of losers. If she had said, "I messed up, stealing is not the example to set, it's wrong." that would have been different. Points for honesty maybe? Nope.
