PETA's Man Of The Year Pleads Guilty

This is great news, because if he had gone to trial, he could have gotten off (with all of his fancy lawyers, mega-bucks, "favorite son" status in Virginia, and questionable prosecution witnesses). This is the best way. It ensures us that he's going to pay in some way. Let's hope it's at least a year in the big house and a big old end to that lucrative NFL contract and associated sponsorships. BYE BYE MICHAEL VICK!

It's a real shame!! Michael Vick had everything: young, rich, handsome and a career where he was making millions. But this turd could not resist the urge to be cruel to an innocent animal. Jail is way too good for him.

The one laugh I got out of this was watching his "friends" turn on his sorry ass to save theirs!!! Now Vick will get more time in jail then any of them. Now THAT'S funny!!!

My hatred of this dog murdering barbaric ignorant piece of shit knows no bounds. Throw his sorry ass in jail and ban him forever from the NFL. Michael Vick is only "taking full responsibility" because he doesn't want to face RICO charges. He's just trying to save his murdering ass.

I can't believe what an asshole this guy is. The only good news is that this plea is only for the federal charges, he still has state charges pending. I really can't believe that this guy has millions and millions of dollars and this is the best thing he can come up of doing with it? He doesn't deserve it.

Furthermore, an informant from inside the dogfighting world who spoke on ESPN's Outside the Lines told reporters about "a whole roster of names of professional athletes that we know are involved in dogfighting... I bet not even 10 percent have come to light." Given these disturbing allegations and the numerous recent cases of animal abuse involving NFL players, the NFL needs to act vigorously and with authority to stamp this out immediately. Him pleading guilty is the best we could hope for. T-bone is absolutely correct that if this went to trial, even with his three "pals" to testify against him, he would have probably gotten off. Sadly, justice has a price tag on it in the US.

Don't know that he will get any real jail time, but hopefully this marks him as a big enough liability that no NFL team wants to touch him. Especially as he is (was haaaa!) a QB. The quarter-back is the face of your team. What team is going to have a convicted animal abuser/murderer as their "spokesmodel"? Not based on morality mind you, not in professional sports, but based on how much money someone like that make your franchise?

Hopefully with the conviction and with most of his endorsements being dropped, he lands and stays on skid row and never makes JackSh1t again.

It is a form letter but please add one or two lines of your own. The more individual, personal messages they get the better. I wrote that it was so wrong for them to say he is coming back before they even know the outcome of any case and they should put it to the public, to see if we actualy want him back.

It's unusual that posters agree so universally (I Hate Dogs/Dogs should Die notwithstanding) on this site. I'll talk about the 3 "buddies" that turned on Vick, if just to say; they did the right thing in the end but, they should suffer harsh consequences for being involved in the first place. Vick made the whole situation possible-I highly doubt that his "buddies" had the means to set up such an elaborate operation.
I find it surprising that the NFL would consider letting Vick back in since last time I checked, it is ILLEGAL for players to gamble and that is precisely what he was doing. How are they going to spin that??? Vick abused the gift he was given, now it should be passed on to someone who deserves it.

...Unfortunately, it's not nicknamed the "National Felon League" for nothing. It is entirely possible Vick will play again. Then the fans are to blame.

Bottom line -- sport's teams cannot survive without fans. If the NFL chooses to let this thug play again (or any player who defiantly breaks "character conduct clauses") then the public should boycott. Hit them in the pocketbook, since that's all they care about anyways.

As fanatical a sport as football is, I cannot see the Atlanta fans supporting this a$$hole as a QB ever again, even if by some freak chance he was allowed to play. I heard on the news this morning that the Atlanta fans are sending their Vick jerseys to an animal shelter, to be used for bedding and 'cleaning up' after the animals. Rather appropriate I say.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday when I heard he might actually do time for this. He should have to clean kennels, use what's left of his celebrity to do PS ads against animal cruelty and raise funds for them. I would hope he'd be strictly supervised around any animals though...

I just read something so upsetting that I could vomit. Apparently, half of the Atlanta Falcon's fans and ticketholders are African American, and since the African American community has mixed feelings about Vick's guilt and sentencing, the Falcons and the NFL might be holding off on punishment, even though the guy pleaded guilty. If this had been a white man, I would have said "lock him up, take his money and make him do community service". I wouldn't have seen color. I would have judged based on the points of the case. I only hope that the NFL is holding off on punishing Vick until after he has served his criminal punishment.
Why suspend a guy for a year if that suspension is served concurrently with his jail time? Wait until he's released then, mete out his NFL justice.

That's what I hope will happen.

Sadly, what I suspect will happen, is that the NFL will hold off his punishment in the hopes that once Vick gets out of prison, the media & fans will have softened to the "old news".

Then they can continue to cash in on his celebrity - and I say celebrity cuz he's an OK quarterback - there are better athletes in the league. Vick's appeal to the NFL brass was his marketability.

I was reading emails @ CNN.com regarding Vick...there were very few folks that felt he should be allowed to play in the NFL again. But, someone actually (tried) to draw an analogy between Vick's crimes and another NFL player that was arrested for smoking pot and still allowed to play...because the crimes compare so closely right? GAAAH!

Off to meetings....double GAAAH!

Once Vick does his time, he should struggle to make ends meet like every other murderer that walks out of prison! EVERYONE from drug dealers to rapists have to do the time, and then they often struggle to get back on their feet and make an honest living. WHY THE HELL should Michael Vick be any different??? The African American population does not embrace animals and pets like whites do. I'm not saying that to encourage anger, it's just a culural fact. Their struggles are totally different from what whites face, so their outlook is different. Many are trying to get through life themselves, so they don't overwhelmingly get involved in animal welfare and causes. Because of the higher rates of poverty in the African American community, many don't have the money or desire to bring pets into their lives.

Most of the African American people I have met who were raised in the south tell me they don't like animals. They believe animals should never be allowed indoors etc. The would never let a dog or cat on their bed - let alone in it. They have deeply ingrained beliefs that they were brought up to believe. Those who do love animals usually have more education and wealth. Also, the younger generations are quickly becoming more animal friendly because of exposure to other cultures and shows like Animal Planet. They are also observing many celebrities who have deep love for their pets.

Oh, I don't excuse the behavior. I'm an animal lover myself and when I heard this news, I was appalled and ashamed. Michael Vick had so much going for him. He had adoring fans, plenty of money and talent, yet he still made bad choices.

You can't excuse it, but I think that we have to be aware that for some people, those dogs "are just animals." They don't have the emotional attachments to pets like many of us do. A dog is property or something to guard your house and keep burglars away.

Because of this, I would encourage everyone here to get involved in some way, even a small way. Support animal rights groups and the like because that is how we can change such mindsets. These groups give animals their voice and fight hard to protect them from abuse.
