This guy David Schmidt who tried to extort Tom Cruise ended up dead. Uh, can I take back everything I ever said about Tom and his completely sane and normal religion? Seriously?
A scandalmonger accused of trying to extort more than $1 million from actor Tom Cruise was found dead in an apparent suicide Friday, two weeks after he told a Daily News reporter he wanted to kill himself.Cops found the body of David Schmidt, 47, dubbed the "Sultan of Sleaze" for peddling celebrity dirt, in his Phoenix home. Authorities did not say how he died.
He had been under house arrest and planned to plead guilty to demanding that Cruise pay up to $1.3 million for pictures of his wedding to Katie Holmes.
Schmidt allegedly told New York Daily News columnist George Rush that he "did something really stupid" and said he "put a belt around his neck in the shower" several weeks ago. Oh oh. This whole thing stinks to high heaven but I'm not saying a damn thing. No more remarks about spaceships and volcanoes and Scientology being a haven for closet queens. Nope. It all seems incredibly rational to me now. Excuse me while I go into hiding. Yikes.
