I'm sure we're all shocked to hear that Lou Pearlman, the man who helped create such boy-band giants at the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, was basically a dirty old man who loved being inappropriate with his clients. An in-depth article in Vanity Fair interviewed a number of men who worked with Pearlman, either in bands or as aspiring singers, and gave reports that stated that Pearlman often made lewd advances toward the young men whose careers he was crafting. A preliminary member of the Backstreet Boys, Phoenix Stone, indicated that Pearlman's behavior towards a young Nick Carter had been "definitely inappropriate." Additionally, Nick's mother, Jane, had this to say of her son's experiences:
"Certain things happened and it almost destroyed our family. I tried to warn everyone. I tried to warn all the mothers . . . I tried to expose him for what he was years ago."Other guys talked about how Pearlman was way into groping the guys, as well as giving...well, you know. Hmm, would this possibly explain somehow why Nick is such a bastard to his ex-girlfriends? I'm not sure. I slept through that one psychology class, but I have a good excuse. Jane Carter had to have her head buried awfully deep in the sand to not know the sort of person Pearlman was. The guy was a walking cliche.
But while the perv stuff will get most of the attention, I think his biggest motivator was and always has been money.
