This is pretty freakin' impressive! Move over J-Hud, Charice Pempengco of the Philippines is the new diva in town. The clip is from a show called "Star King," which looks to me like an Idol-like singing competition with lots of Laurence Welk bubbles and a very animated audience. Not only does little Charice have her notes down, but she's even got a little sass thrown in there with neck rolls, finger-pointing and whatnot. However, I hate to over-simplify the subtle nuances of her performance--suffice to say, you should just watch it for yourself.

Holy shit.
Akare says:
AMAZING, geezzz I wish I had a record label!
Great voice darn it!
Whoa! says:
If they can sing like this, and dance like in the "Thriller" video, then I predict Filipinos are taking over the world.
PhillyBitch says:
Wow. What a voice. Amazing performance. Good for her.
Jaimie says:
That is my least favorite style of singing but I gotta say she's freakin' amazing.
Anne Arkham says:
I hope she's paying close attention to Britney and Lindsey. She does not want to end up like them.
Bunny says:
Wow!! Fantastic! I also love that she changed the lyrics to say MOM which is so wonderful!! I hope that some label does scoop her up then dumb down her voice the way they did Aguillera until she was able to assert herself. Really nice.
Bird says:
Okay, so, I'm shocked no one else has said anything about this:
Subtitle: "Deep and sweet vocal mashed together"
That made me laugh so friggin' hard.
And back on track, this girl gave me chills; SO talented!
star king one says:

confilkdiamond says:
@ Jaimie...Who cares if it is YOUR least favorite style of singing???
You sound annoying...and snobbish. It's okay not to like this type of music but when complimenting someone you don't attach rude criticisms.
Give Charise her props and keep it moving!
Jessie says:
confilkdiamond, I could give the same advice to you. Shut up. People like you suck.
Bob says:
I know all Asians look alike, but you should know at least some of the difference.
Most Filipinos speak English -- the country is in fact was a U.S. territory for many years.
And they're letters of the alphabet look exactly like ours.
Here's a clip from the show "Philippines Idol":

Gave me chills, amazing voice from such a little person!!!
Jane says:
How did it ever become 'the standard' for singing to be done in the accent and affectations of a pre-desegregation American Negro voice?
It's odd enough when contemporary African-Americans sing like that, especially when most don't talk like that. It silly still when white American kids, like Justin Timberland or Christina Aquillara, do it. But, it's a whole new level of bizarre to see native Asians doing it as well.
It's like if an American singer were singing a cover of a Shonen Knife song and sang it in the same accent as the original -- or worst yet, in the accent of Benny Hill's Chinaman caricature.
It's borderline insulting and condescending, if not downright racist.
EuroSista says:
DAMN... That girl had me cryin'. Holy Moly what a voice! I hope somebody swoops her up and makes her a star, I would pay to hear her sing.
Just DAMN!! The little girl from Americas got talent gave me chills when she sang that song, but this girl made me cry!
Sooz says:
The thing is, she came in 3rd to Sam Concepcion's 1st place!!He, in my opinion, sang horribly and off key to boot! This girl is a natural. Britney who????
CanuckGal says:

Ronnie says:
Just for the information of those people who keeps on wonderin' who & where this girl came from. As far as I know, She's 14 years old (born on May 10, 1993). She's from Cabuyao, Laguna, Philippines (just adjacent to Metro Manila). She's studying in Gulod National High School (in Cabuyao). She was born singer, her Mom and Aunt are both singers. Good in english? It's not unusual since the Philippines is highly influence by America. And english is one of the two medium of instruction being used in our schools. Her style may also look like the same from those famous american (black/white) singers because our music is also highly influence by the Western countries. Why such? Because those people are the ones we usually seen in our TV sets. That's why there are some people who commented that if she's really good why she tends to copy the style of those American singers? When we woke up in the morning and open our radio sets, we can hear western music. And as we open our tv sets, you can see same type of music being sung.
We have a lot of singers who are as good as Charice but not of her age. That makes Charice exceptional & fantastic.
Amen...
miriam says:
Charice arrived in the USA last Friday and she will be taping for the Ellen Degeneres show on Tuesday, December 18. Not sure when the episode will air though. Then she has been invited again to Korea to perform for the same show, Starking. She has also been invited to perform in the MTV Japan awards show. I heard that MCA Universal in USA already offered her a recording contract. So for you doubters out there, watch the Ellen show so you will finally be satisfied that she is not lip synching.
danace says:
Exactly! ^^ very well said. :-)

Taking over the world of entertainment is kinda over the top. For Filipinos, its enough that we make a mark in our own small way coz we know its kinda hard to penetrate this field let alone to dominate it. But with the advent of Youtube and if present trends continue like what this new frontman of the legendary band "Journey" did at Hard Rock Cafe in Manila is showing, it would'nt be too far fetched to entertain the idea. Incidentally, he was also discovered in Youtube like Charice. Freakin uncanny. Enjoy you guys. :P
