Tom Hank and Julia Roberts have teamed up for the first time for "Charlie Wilson's War". It's a biopic about the Texas congressman who, in the 1980's, financed the Afghanistan army fending off the Soviet Union. It's somehow related to 9/11 and the current war in Iraq. I'm sure more erudite individuals who read this blog can chime in about the subject matter. It's Christmastime and I'm ignorant and I have shopping to do and don't have time to open Wikipedia. What's more important is that Mr. Clean himself Tom Hanks portrays the senator as coke-snortin' and lady chasin'! Well, he WAS going to be portrayed as coke-snortin' until people got nervous. Damn, junior high school kids are doing it nowadays, are these people new? Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (of "West Wing" fame) explained the decision not to show Hanks hoovering up blow on screen as something it would be difficult "to look past" for American audiences. "There's a vocabulary in movies that boozing is O.K., especially if the guy is going to kind of reform himself. That if we saw him snorting it, we're no longer going to care about the Russians and the Afghans and the horror over there, " Sorkin says. Oh come now. We're all adults here. Some people in this country have done the cocainya. It happens. Seeing Tom Hanks powdering his nose isn't going to have them fainting in the aisles. Here's pics from a screening at NYC's MOMA.
