Can you feel the magic? Well, not if the writer's strike makes all this nomination excitement moot. I understand where the guild is coming from, but it would be like cancelling the gay Olympics. I need to see gowns, and acceptance speeches where people forget to thank their spouses, and actors trying to maintain a happy face with a camera right in their mug when they don't win.

Anyway, the nominations for the 80th Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning and let's hear it for "Juno". The totally hot Ellen Page and her glorious film about a knocked up snarky teen got nods for Best Actress, Film, Director, and Screenwriter. "There Will Be Blood", Paul Thomas Anderson's epic about the crazy oil baron dude played by Daniel Day-Lewis, got nods for Director, Picture, and for Daniel as best actor. Other nominated pictures included "Atonement" (though Keira Knightley wasn't nominated), "The Savages", "No Country for Old Men", and "Michael Clayton". The telecast is scheduled for ABC on February 24, cross your fingers that it has a few celebrities. At this point, I would be happy with Charlotte Rae and Carrot Top.

very nice color and everything

I love it! Julie Christie, Laura Linney, Cate Blanchette, Viggo, George Clooney, Casey Affleck nominated. Brad and Angie NOT.

Viggo should win. Fantastic actor!

It just doesn't get any better than Tommy Lee Jones, Johnny Depp, Viggo and Daniel Day-Lewis, does it?

The women are great as well: Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Laura Linney, and Ellen Page.

Bravo to the Academy! For once they're not selling out to big box office numbers and physical appearance. My pick: Julie Christie & Daniel Day-Lewis.

Sean Penn, you'll get nothing and like it. Jon Krakauer (the writer) deserves all the glory.

Wow, what a great field -- it looks like no noms derived from sympathy or sappy subject matter. And Ruby Dee for "American Gangster"?! Awesome.

A few surprises

Juno? UGH. Most overrated film of the year. Worst screenplay, most unrealistic dialogue. The performers were all great, tho certainly not Oscar worthy - Kiera Knightly was snubbed for Ellen Page? Please. It doesn't stand a chance at Best Picture, thank God, so fingers remain crossed the brilliant writing of Michael Clayton or The Savages will eclipse Diablo "One Hit Wonder" Cody.
