Jane Fonda was on the Today show this morning, along with Eve Ensler, to talk about the 15th anniversary of "The Vagina Monologues." During the interview, Jane chatted about how she had been approached to participate in the monologues without ever having had seen a production of the play and said, "I live in Georgia, OK? I had been asked to do a monologue called 'The C*nt.'"
Later on, Meredith Vieira tried to cover for Jane, offering an apology. The talk show host said, "It was a slip and obviously she apologizes, and so do we. We would do nothing to offend the audience. So please accept that apology."
Oh come on, what's a little exchange of the C-word among us ladies?
But on a serious note, that actually is the name of the monologue, so Jane was just being honest. Also, she's 70 years old. And quite frankly, when I'm 70, I'm going to be way more vulgar than that on a daily basis because well, I can. I'm going to punch babies and when I'm told I need to stop, I'm going to cry and say, "I'm only doing it because I'm dying."
Meredith Viera's apology is after the jump.

Randy McCauley says:
Personally, I think everyone could use a little C-word on Valentine's Day. However, since we are an hour behind in the Central Time Zone here in Central Texas, The Today Show had already edited our version. So I watched the interview and thought it was very nice and remembered how much I used to love watching the Jane Fonda Workout VHS and went about my business. Only later, Meredith is apologizing for something Jane said and I was a bit confused because it was not in the version I saw! So, thank you Lisa for providing me with the unedited version. Now I understand, but am somehow still confused. It is called "The Vagina Monologues" right? Maybe The Today Show should just avoid anything that might be of interest to anyone with an education. Happy VD.

I live in Georgia and have heard of The Vagina Monologues for years now. Jane Fonda wonders why people in Atlanta and Georgia hate her, well here it is. She needs to shut up and leave Georgia.

I don't care who you are, there is no excuse for dropping the C bomb on a national morning show. (My MOM watches that show!)
STILL thinking Jane is one crazyass piece of work.

I LOVE JANE
she is an american HERO
she stood up against an evil war in the 60's
youngster may need to be reminded it was being ALLOWED to drag on because those who invested in the war industry were making LOTS AND LOTS of money by keeping an unneeded war going
a true hero
words dont kill

Nanc' says:
"Dear" rjp3,
I suspect your comment was just a bid to inflame others, however,
I'm not exactly a "youngster" and although I can understand people in the '60s rebelling against the war in Vietnam, Jane Fonda is certainly NOT an American "hero".
She has admitted that she was "drugged-up" during that time and she likewise supported the Black Panthers in the early 1970s, stating "Revolution is an act of love; we are the children of revolution, born to be rebels. It runs in our blood."
She called the Black Panthers "our revolutionary vanguard", and said "we must support them with love, money, propaganda and risk."
In a 1979 appearance at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, she was asked about her past praise for Huey Newton/Black Panthers and won laughter and applause for her response:
"I've said a lot of off-the-wall things in my life. All I can say about that is I WAS NAIVE AND UTTERLY WRONG."
Yeah, she has been WRONG so often.
US Firefighters are "heroes". Most police and US military troops are "heroes".
Jane Fonda is NOT.
Cory says:
Oh people, WHO CARES. There is a war in Iraq. Are people THIS uptight in the world that someone using the word C U Next Tuesday causes such a uproar? As for Jane Fonda, I respect her. People may not agree with her viewpoints as they ran/run contrary to the sheeple, but at least she stood up for what she believes in (I am, of course, referring to her protests on the Vietnam war). It seems, generally, that old, white men have a problem with her the most (sexist much?).
Cory says:
Nanc': that's all and good, but I'm referring to her protests of the US involvement in Vietnam and, most recently, Iraq. I applaud her for having a voice, which is more than most people.
"Fonda has served as an activist for many political causes, one of the most notable and controversial of which was her opposition to the Vietnam War. She has also protested the Iraq War and violence against women. She describes herself as a liberal and a feminist."
Nanc' says:
"Dear" Cory,
I'm not saying that ALL her views have been wrong and I don't take exception to ANY American citizen voicing their concerns as long as their ACTIONS (bombings, etc) don't hurt the rest of us.
I'm stating that Jane has admitted to shooting-off-her-mouth in the past while being drugged-upped and later admitting that she was WRONG and I am stating that she is NOT an American "hero".
We here in the US, have a LOT of "heroes". Jane just isn't one of them and, still, there is no excuse for using the word "c*nt" on a national, morning tv show anymore than there is an excuse for using the words, "fa*", "d*ck" or "ni**er".
She did it to get publicity. Obviously, it worked for her.
Ruby says:
I remember the "Jane Goes to Vietnam" episode well. It was much like the perils of Brittney, Paris, and Lindsey. A spoiled starlet trying to be outragous and rebel against her pointless life.
It's time to move on from punishing her for her poor choices.
So she said the "C" word. It is only taboo because it describes the female sex organ. If she had let "cock" or "dick" slip they would't have done anything but laugh. That's the whole idea behind the VM and like shows - to celebrate the unspeakable part of a woman's body.
I would only consider it rude if she had called a View host by that term.
Nanc' says:
I seriously doubt that using the words "c*ck", "b*lls", or "d*ck" - on a national, morning tv show - would have resulted in "laughter" within the FCC or general US community.
In addition, the words "c*nt" and "p*ssy" are not yet words for the family, breakfast table.
There IS such a thing as the FCC and they have rather large fines for words such as these.
Personally, I'm willing to let Jane "off" for her
drug-induced/childish/spoiled, rich, Hollywood -BRAT behavior IF she would just SHUT-UP and stop using - for instance- the C-word on national, morning tv.

That's it?...People are so effing retarded...That was the name of the monologue...When used in reference to a title, I don't see how people can say it's a bad thing...People are dumb. And even then, it's just a word. Go do something productive in life instead of worrying over language. I bet 99 percent of the people whiggin' out about it can't even use it correctly half the time.
Mateo says:
This is America. Americans (real Americans) swear. Regardless of how much the FCC (and the Moral Majority) want to sugarcoat American television, and make it more "family friendly" (by pushing Christian values), the truth of the matter is that real people swear.
Grow up and deal with it. If you don't like what they're saying, watch Good Morning America or FOX News. Just because the government doesn't like swearing doesn't mean that it should have any right to control speech. Freedom of speech, especially words like CUNT, which incite no violence or cause harm to anyone.
And just remember: Grandmas were once young women, and ten bucks says they swore like sailors too.
