Michelle Williams gave an interview to "Elle" magazine on the set of her new film in Sweden just two weeks prior to his death. Ouch. In it she discusses how their break-up affected her. She said "I didn't know where to go. I couldn't imagine any place in the world that was gonna feel good to me." The couple allegedly broke up due to Heath's on-again/off-again issues with drugs. A video of him doing lines at a party was released shortly after his death. Michelle says that she buried herself in work to cope with the breakup and it's when she wasn't working that "things start to get a little messy". Keep in mind that this interview was conducted prior to his death so, again, ouch.

I loved heath ledger, amazing talent, the problem of drugs got worse. Yes she should've helped him through it but what if she already tried, a drugged father is no way for a child to be raised. Michelle did what every responsible adult should have. An addiction is only to blame :( I miss you so much heath you were my idol.

they had their issues, & it obviously didn't work out. that doesn't mean michelle quit caring about him, or vice versa. they might not have still loved eachother the same way they once did, but they still had love for eachother, that's just the way it was. she was VERY lucky to have him in my opinion.
