Le sigh. That's my reaction to my terrible title and my inability/refusal to come up with something more clever. It appears that the foppish singer has done gone and got himself a tattoo--a full sleeve, to be specific. He was spotted by photographers leaving Katsuya in a black, long-sleeved hoodie. Aww, he and David Beckham are twinsies now! They're like two tough peas in a pod.

It's a shame he's not dating Kat von D at the moment. I have a feeling she'd probably have done it it for a shot of tequila and romp together in a bath tub. Her rates are on a sliding scale.

Is it even possible to get a full sleeve in one sitting?

I smell Ashton Kutcher and a punk'd thing happening here.

Mayer has many, many tats and had several on that one arm before getting the sleeve.

How unspeakably vile. Don't people like this know they will get older and that will look 100 times worse? WHY would someone do that to their body? And don't tell me it's art. Go buy a picture that will appreciate in value not look really bad in 20 years.

Full sleeve?

Really?

He doesn't strike me as the full sleeve type. Maybe a Pooh Bear & Honey Pot on his bum, but not a full sleeve

I could see him getting a tattoo, but in no way does he strike me as the type to get a full sleeve. Kind of clashes with the image he seems to have built up over the last few years.

Dude, if you're looking for a 'body modification', how about first considering a trip to the gym?

i think it suits him in an artsy kind of way.

I've got 1/3 of my arm done in a similar Japanese style - from the shoulder to just above the elbow - and that took 4 five-hour sittings. From the pics above, Mayers' is not complete. He's only got the gray work done and some red. To go from zero to full sleeve takes time.

apparently, he got the sleeve done while in japan. he was on a trip, doing some 'soul searching', and was inspired enough to get a piece of work that reflects him in many ways... i have a 3/4 sleeve myself of similar japanese-style reflections, and i got it after a trip of a similar nature... i definitely understand him if this is indeed the case.

LES, I think the thing is, in 20 years, he'll be 50 so he won't need to impress anyone or for it to look nice. I agree it's awful and I don't have any tattoos but I think little ones are alright. No way I'd ever get a sleeve. I'd wake up every morning and be like "WOAH SHIT IT WASN'T A DREAM!"

It's a terrible spoilage of skin, I really dislike it on him, it just doesn't match his personality. ouch..

Who cares what you all think about a man who you don't even know.

how about the fact that none of u really KNOW him, in which case who are u to say it doesnt fit him or his personality.

how about the fact that none of u really KNOW him, and who are u to say it doesnt fit him or his personality. Or try and impose your preference or opinion of what is or isnt art, i actually like him MORE now

how about the fact that none of u really KNOW him in which case who are u to say it doesnt fit him or his personality. i like him MORE now for actually living HIS life and doing what HE wants to do to HIS body regardless of what a bunch of record executives have created & work so hard to make the public see/not see

i love tattoos on men, i think its hot. i love john mayers voice & now i think his hottness went up a notch in my book ;)

I think that John Mayer is a wonderful musician and his tattoos are just one more way of expressing himself, other than his songs. He's a man and can make his own decisions and he knows tattoos are permanent. I think his tattoos are gorgeous.

That just makes him even sexier. Men who can rock a guitar, sing beautifully, and indulge in the pain and experience of tattoos are God like. lol =]

hmm, if he does so, what's the different between blues-guitar player and metal-guitar player??

i think it is better for him for having a clean skin rather than tattoed skin,,
like his guitar sound, i like it clean warm and becek tone..

but, anak muda memang suka coba coba..

He took a month off and went to japan to get it done old school style with the best artist in japan! he still isnt done with the colors yet he has to go back eventually.

He's awesome! love his guitar style - love the tatt , too ! I have a Koi fish on my right calf ---- trust me , there's a reason that jap tatts are popular ! the fact that he got one , makes me like him even more ..... after the whole 'Mayer The Player' scandal wrecked my hopes about ! He seems more down to earth now :)

who cares what any of you lame people think...
i know he doesn't
some people in life don't worry about what things will look like when they get old, remember when your old YOUR OLD!!! who cares, not only will the tattoo look worse, but so will he and you. that is what getting old is all about. why don't you stop judging people and go judge yourself. life is too short to care what judgmental people like you, sitting in your house, ugly and fat, think. Go to the gym, stop drink diet cokes

you know whats sad?

you all invest so much time and thought into everything except his music.

I totally agree on the "what about when your older?"thing. But I always realise everyday could be your last.I love tattoos, love the process of getting them and when my first child is born I will get a sleeve designed to celebrate everything thats great in my life.It will always remind me when I'm shitty about the petty things we all get shitty about.I'm 25 now so when I'm 60,20% of people will look just as silly anyway.everyone has them

His life, his body! Tatts are amazing, i have a similar one, only about 1/3 sleeve in a similar jap style. Times are changing people, what might look awful to you looks fantastic to others. Good on him!

I have to disagree about the whole "it will look bad on you when you get older", because not only may the tattoo look bad, but so will the rest of you in general. And well done tattoos can stay sharp for quite a while. So who cares about whats its gonna look like 20-50 years down the road. The rest of your body's gonna look just as bad. So live it up while your still young and screw what you think its gonna look like when your old. At least you had fun when you were young. And like phil said, you have to realize that everyday could be your last. Dont assume you're gonna have those 20-50 years. Take advantage of all life has to offer now.

i have a full sleeve, top of shoulder all the way to my wrist. outline took 6 hours, each session after that took 3.5-4 hours. in total it took me 7 months to complete. calculate that

2x month
x7 months
= 14 sessions
x4
= 56
+ 6 hour outline

TOTAL HRS. 62 hours of work

i think i have pictures on my myspace page

I think it's cool. He's not out there promoting tattoos anyway. He is a musician and song writer. Who cares that he has tattoos?

"Is it even possible to get a full sleeve in one sitting? "

Entirely. Lots of artists do marathon sessions on willing collectors. Yes, sometimes pain killers are involved. I know of guys going 16+ hours. My personal longest is 6 - 6 1/2 hrs. It was on my kneecap and I was stone cold sober for the duration so I consider it a pretty good record.

A few other things: Artists tattoo at different speeds, and most out there are much faster than described above.

As for all the "what about when you get older?" talk, frankly, you're going to look like shit when you are older anyhow. I highly doubt any of us tattooed folk will give a damn. We'll be much more concerned with our failing kidneys, I'm sure.

loser
