"A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt. Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that's a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood - maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect," Dr. Drew says.
You forgot the closeted homosexuality. That's the shredded cheese on top of this chili! As expected, Cruise's lawyer lashed out at Drew and compared him to a Nazi. For having a medical opinion?
"This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels," says Cruise's high-powered attorney, Bert Fields.
Drew caved. Probably because he knows that Cruise has millions and, even scarier, followers. Some of them high-powered.
"Although Mr. Field's intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm," his rep said in a statement.
Tom's not paranoid or anything. I mean, his cars are bombproof, but you never know when someone might throw grenades at his SUV. Right. *cuckoo sound*

Not a fan of Tom's says:
Tom Cruise has always seemed to have an exceptionally high opinion of himself. Since he was physically attractive, most shallow females allowed and even encouraged it. That has recently morphed into his belief that he is actually more intelligent than any/all medical professionals. Dr. Drew was right to point it out in the media and I was glad to see it. I read the statement his pr firm released and I don't see it as an apology. Cruise's attorney needs to be hit with a slander and libel suit though.
Nice Redesign says:
I agree with "Not Fan of Tom's". I don't see it as an apology. Also, amen on the rest of the above post. Tom Cruise has built a very strong opinion of himself. He's like Princess Di, needing constant validation through the public and building himself up more than he is. Then getting huffy about it. Gag.
say what? says:
"unqualified"? I hope that guy only means in the sense that Dr. Drew hasn't ever treated Tom Cruise, because the doc is EXTREMELY qualified to treat mental illness.
sammi says:
AH..Crap I was so excited yesterday, then he crumbles...loser.
drewpopo says:
Surprise! It is said Drew's rumorous GF post a profile with many hot photos at a beautiful people site. That is a site for wealthy people and their admirers, it is called Richromances.com or something? Do you know her username over there? I wanna check her out~
Pansy Aston says:
Dr. Drew is a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist. I have watched Celebrity Rehab and was very impressed with
his skills.
No way will I ever accept Scientology as anything more than a weird-ass money--grubbing cult for spoiled, guilt-ridden "celebrities".
Snow Pie says:
When are you really going to start helping people, Drew, and tell them that religion has caused more people to drink and do drugs out of sheer confusion than any childhood abuse. Religion is a global problem.
Time to inform all of the poor lost souls.
Do that and I'll call you a doctor.
shelley says:
I think Dr Drew is a wonderful doctor. Anyone would be lucky to be treated by him. Tom Cuise does have a high opinion of himself, good self esteem is good but to be conceided is a different story. Tom needs to let Katie be herself.
nicole says:
A mental health's professional such as Dr. Drew making a diagnosis before meeting their patients in not unusual. This is standard practice...Dr. Drew is obviously past the point of even realizing he is doing anything wrong...a doctor, a professional one of his peers needs to take him aside and explain things to him.
Doctors can and will use things people say about the patient rather than their actual clinical observations directly of the patient as a basis to treat patients. It happens. Many times patients are not even aware of the stuff that is being said. To me and to most this is not science rather medically formalizing possible misunderstandings and judgements. Take what people say to inform the doctor...great but this is NOT a clincial observation. Why can't they see that maybe there is a rational explanation?- for instance, maybe Tom Cruise likes this religion -Common sense to most normal people. Clearly many psy doctors are not scientists but quacks. Get it together already and be um...scientists.
Dr. Drew apparently has not even aware that he is doing anything wrong. He did it again. He publicly analyzed Joaquin Phenoix without it even phasing him -grossly unprofessional blatantly. Tell me Dr. Drew how is publicly humiliating a beloved actor be a positive thing for the community? People think he is eccentric based on his behavior...possibly faking it as a method actor. And exactly what is YOUR apparent fascination with celebrity rooted in - Dr. Drew? If Mr. Phenoix is ill and he very well might be it will be clear to all those who know him IN REALITY (ie not you Dr. Drew) and get help for him PRIVATELY. The pain, stigma and label of mental illness is serious and lifelong, Dr. Drew please don't make it worse. As a scientist I would have to ask, is it even possible to get a valid evaluation now for Mr. Phenoix?
Mental health professionals should not be so quick to judge...use common sense/science which comes along with scientific ethics for the sake of the their profession and those suffering from real mental illness.
