Anne Hathaway must have felt slapped in the face when she found out what a con-artist her ex-fiance Raffaello Follieri was. Despite having to be in the public eye to promote her movie Get Smart, Anne seemed to handle herself well, although not addressing the breakup in the media. Now she's finally talking about how the ordeal has helped make her a better and stronger person.
"The worst thing that happens to you can be the best thing for you, if you don't let it get the best of you," Anne said, quoting Will Rogers.

It is hard to believe that such a savvy actress had no idea what was going on with her live-in boyfriend. Given that she was crazy in love with him, it is possible she had many, many clues that were obviously pointing to the truth but we all know how easy it is to stuff those things under the rug when you want something to work. But to look at her say what a shock it must have been to her sounds like you are her publicist. There are always those feelings, those intuitions that we ignore because we don't want to know the truth. We want it the way we want it and ignoring the clues keeps the fantasy rolling.

How often do we know exactly the financial dealings of those close to us? She had a completely different job than her boyfriend, so it's easy to just let him do his thing and not investigate it closely.

I agree with the second comment. With my husband and I, I know certain extents of his finacial information, because we are married and they are tied to me. But I have never looked at the numbers so closely that I know all of his moves. Not trying to down myself but I am quite oblivious to how the money flows in our household. So I can believe that she had nothing to do with it, or knew anything. She probably tried to stay away from the financial info on him as much as possible. I'm assuming she just loved him for him.
