The low-budget film made headlines for featuring child actress Dakota Fanning as a 12-year-old Elvis fan who is raped. The rough cut that debuted at the festival brought mostly poor reviews, but the final edit has changed the story and content of the film. The rape scene is still present, but the child's reactions are a little different.
"The whole process was challenging from the beginning," director Deborah Kampmeier said. "It's a story about a girl whose voice and spirit are silenced, and then it's about her reclaiming her voice on a deeper, truer level. It's very interesting how the story that I'm trying to tell has been paralleled by the actual events of the making of the film."
