Christina Applegate Talks Breast Cancer Surgery

Share
Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate caused quite a stir at the Emmys when she showed up on the red carpet in a dramatic silk organza Reem Acra design.

The 36-year-old actress turned heads with her light-blue and gold frock but also because it was the first major public appearance since the news of her breast cancer diagnosis broke.

Applegate chatted with Oprah on her talk show about her struggle with breast cancer and her decision to have both breasts removed to fight the disease.

"When I met with my doctor and I told him that was my decision and he brought the surgeon in, it was like the flood gates just opened up. I lost it," Christina told the talk show host. Bless her heart, she says that's the first time she cried since being diagnosed with the disease.

Now, the actress will be undergoing eight months of reconstructive surgery on her breasts. If I could telegraph a hug anyone's way, it would be going to her.

I would too Lisa. She is a brave woman. That must have been some decision to make, to have both breasts removed. I hope she lives a long and happy life.

First, she looked so lovely at the Emmys. And I thought she was very brave.

Second, while it would be one of the hardest decisions faced by a woman, I imagine that having watched her mother fight the fight time and time again herself and ultimately come to the same decision, a double mastectomy, was made just a little easier.

Go Christina!

Poor woman. What a horrible diagnosis.

As a doctor I feel I should make a comment here. While I'm sure Applegate's surgeons explained all of her options and the risks and benefits of each, the lay public is missing important information.

Just because you have a double mastectomy does NOT mean that you are guaranteed to never get breast cancer. You may think you have "peace of mind" but there is always the possibility of recurrence. Cells are microscopic and there's no way to guarantee removal of all breast tissue. Even in a small clump of normal breast tissue, cancer can recur.

Good luck to Ms. Applegate, I wish her excellent health and a good recovery from her future reconstructive surgeries.
