Prosecutors were hoping to get him for 18 years behind bars, but O.J. Simpson has found himself sentenced for just three years shy of that for his charges related to armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas. Co-defendant in the case Clarence Stewart was read the same sentence.
He apologized to the court just before his sentence was handed down to him. Simpson, dressed in shackles, told the judge, "I didn't want anybody else's stuff. I just wanted my own. I realize that I was stupid. I am sorry. I didn't know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought I was retrieving property from friends. I'm sorry, I'm sorry for all of it."
Pending a possible appeal, the 61-year-old former football star cannot be freed on bail. Judge Jackie Glass said of the case, "The evidence in this case was overwhelming. This was actually a very violent event."
