Ben Affleck has teamed with the UNHCR's new "Gimme Shelter" campaign to help raise funds and
awareness about the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC) and the work of the UN refugee agency.
Ben, no stranger to charity, shot a four-minute movie (with a Rolling Stones soundtrack okayed by Mick Jagger) in the Congo itself to give people an idea of the shit that's going down. It ain't pretty. Did you know that the AK-47 is called "the Congolese credit card?" *shiver*
Ben also made an appearance today at the United Nations in New York City today for the campaign's launch. He's more than just a cute guy with a buzzcut, folks!
The campaign hopes to raise $23 million in 2009 "to pay for clean water supplies and emergency humanitarian assistance kits in the region."
