The Dark Knight, which starred Ledger as as the Joker, smashed box-office records and will most likely result in an Oscar nomination for the late actor. The second film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, was left unfinished at the time of Ledger's passing and will be released this year after Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law stepped up to fill the role.
Here's a look back through 70+ of our favorite photos of Heath Ledger.

he shouldn't be dead. it's been a year and i still can't believe that this man is dead. what a waste.
Rachel says:
^ agreed
In an industry filled with so many talentless bags of corporate flesh he stood out with his looks and Oscar-worthy talent. The Joker would have been the beginning of a whole new era for Heath and unfortunately one we'll never get to see.
Vicki says:
Thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart for these. I still can't believe how much it hurts...his death was like losing a member of the family. There will never be another one like him! He should have gotten the Oscar for BBM.
RIP, dear Heath. You will never be forgotten!

Thank god for people making nice comments. Have you guys been over to I Don't Like You In That Way? Everyone is so negative and say the most nasty things about his death. To all those people, you shouldn't judge because you didn't know him personally or his family so you have no idea what was going on in his head. I think it's a real shame that someone so young and talented died.

How I wish it worked out for Heath Ledger and Naomi Watts. I think he was very anxiety prone, especially with all the fame, and she gave him the strength to face his fears. When he first got the script for Brokeback Mountain, Heath said he thought it was a beautiful love story, but it did scare him. Naomi played a key role in convincing him to take the part, he said this. It's so sad his life ended the way it did. What a shame. Best of luck to her and her beautiful family.
Amira says:
He was an amazing actor in "Dark Night"
It's so sad that he had to die. And only 28 years young! He had such a life ready, just waiting, for him.
ES says:
Heath died in Jan. 2008 not 2007...you have a typo. Either way it sucks that he is gone.
NickyV says:
onya heath...still the hottest and most talented.
Sanne says:
It's so sad he passed away. It's still hard to believe. But I will never forget him. RIP.
Martiniman says:
Seen "Dark Knight" yet? Heath has to be a sentimental favorite for an Oscar.
