If you ask me, prohibition was a completely unnecessary period in our history. I mean seriously, when has suppression of human desire ever led towards anything beneficial? If anything it makes us more creative on how to get away with what has been stripped (especially when it comes to alcohol). Hence, there was one thing (establishment if you will) that came out of prohibition era that lingers on to this day. The lost art in the New York City nightlife that a few in the know are trying to reclaim is the Speakeasy.
These recreations of the classic hideaways for New York natives looking for lubrication are still the swanky hideaways of the city. Often times you have to know a password to be allowed into one, and once in, you're treated to a full experience of classic (read: good) bartending. These places employ seasoned mixologists who take time in preparing a drink and know such exotic libations as a Ramos Gin Fizz or the like.
Such notable places to flock to are Death and Company, Milk and Honey and Please Don't Tell (PDT). We'd love to share our experiences but as the name states, we are asked not to tell ;)
