'Precious' Charms The Box Office

Share

Critical reviews of the independent film darling, Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, have earned the film high praise at both Cannes and the Toronto Film Festival, along with an endorsement by talk show host, Oprah Winfrey.

However, there was concern that the movie's dark subject matter wouldn't be able able to lure movie goers into theaters. With Precious earning an average of $100,000 from 18 screens in four cities, the future of the Lee Daniels-directed film looks anything but grim.

But then again, it has Mariah Carey in a mustache, which is hard--if not impossible--to pass up.

Brad Pitt's 'Basterds' Bumped Off By 'Final Destination'

Share

The box office success of Quentin Tarantino's action flick, Inglourious Basterds, has enjoyed remarkable box office success, due in no small part to the magnetic pull of its A-list star Brad Pitt.

However, it seems that even Brad's high-profile appear could keep the film in the top spot forever. Horror movie sequel, The Final Destination, knocked Pitt's WWII picture out of the number one position at the box office.

But, as you can see from the movie star's jovial demeanor here out to dinner at a fancy restaurant in Spain, he's managing to cope just fine.

'Inglourious Basterds' Kills At The Box Office

Share

Despite its awkward spelling, Quentin Tarantino's latest film, Inglourious Basterds, kicked ass and took names at the box office on its opening weekend. The WWII film, starring Brad Pitt, took in an impressive $37.6 million in ticket sales with its debut over the weekend.

This weekend's opening marks the best ever for director, Quentin. A box office analyst for Hollywood.com interprets that as follows: "Tarantino helped build the house of Miramax. He's proving right now that he's helping to build the house of Weinstein."

It seems Quentin's insistence on casting Brad Pitt was a smart move. He might be able to save the A-listers from oblivion after all!

'Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince' Is A Midnight Success

Share

Here it goes again! Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince open Wednesday, July 15 at midnight, and what a midnight showing it was. The film earned $22.2 million for its midnight opening, beating the previous record held by The Dark Knight, which made $18.5 million.

We won't know until the end of the day if Harry Potter also beat The Dark Knight's single day record of $67.1 million, but I'm willing to bet it's going to be high up there.

According to Reuters, some of the media have speculated that the fan base for the films, made up of mostly teens and pre-teens, may feel too old for the films. That's bullshit. I was at the midnight showing and it wasn't just teens and pre-teens. It was teens, pre-teens, adults, young adults, mother with their kids, fathers with their kids, and even some who looked like they should be in a nursing home. Ooo, that was mean.

Anyway, people are obsessed with these films (the Vatican loved it!) and it my opinion will keep watching them until there aren't anymore, which is actually happening quite soon, but we don't like to talk about it. So far, the Potter films have made over $4.5 billion worldwide since 2001, and it doesn't look like there will be any stopping them now.

Bruno Wins The Hearts Of Millions

Share

Despite mixed review, Sacha Baron Cohen's latest mockumentary, Bruno, finished first at the box office by grossing $30.4 million. However, all is not great for Bruno. The film was first on Friday, dropped 39% on Saturday and came in third on Sunday. Ouch.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs came in at No. 2 with $28.5 million, dropping only 32 percent from last weekend. The animated family film has made $120.6 million in two weeks. Third place went to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which grossed $24.2 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $339.2 million.

Public Enemies (No. 4 with $14.1 million) and The Proposal (No. 5 with $10.5 million) round out the top five. The Proposal marks star Sandra Bullock's first $100 million picture since 2000's Miss Congeniality, and the romantic comedy should have no trouble passing 1994's Speed to become Bullock's biggest hit. The weekend's other new wide release, the teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper, opened at No. 7 with $5 million.

Shirtless Shia LaBeouf Runs From Robots To Box Office Domination

Share

After only two weeks of being released in the United States, the summer action flick starring Shia LaBeouf has rocketed past the 300 million dollar mark at the box office, giving Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs a run for its money.

Worldwide, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen has already earned $600 million, zeroing in on the $700 million dollar mark made by the first installment of the series.

Meanwhile, everybody's been making such a fuss over the movie's star, Megan Fox, and her seductive car washing abilities. Perhaps, if we're lucky, Shia will get in on the wax-on, wax-off action if there's a third film.

Shia LaBeouf Ties With Ray Romano At Box Office

Share

It was a draw this weekend. Shia LaBeouf's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Ray Romano's Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs tied with $42.5 million each. Final numbers will come out later today as to which movie came in first, but regardless it was a very close race.

Universal's crime saga Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, debuted a solid No. 3 with $26.2 million.

With a $293.5 million domestic total after just 12 days, Transformers shot past Disney and Pixar Animation's Up to become the year's highest-grossing movie.

'Public Enemies' Takes On 'Transformers'

Share

The period piece Public Enemies could hardly be expected to take on the giant robots and Megan Fox's wicked curves in Transformers, however, it's looking like the Johnny Depp-starring vehicle will be holding its own against the summer action flick.

Although the earmarked-for-an-Oscar-nominated movie isn't expected to bump Revenge of the Fallen out of the top spot, the Michael Mann-directed pic is predicted to nab between $20 to 30 million in its opening weekend.

This would put the movie in third place for the opening weekend, the most impressive for a non-Pirates of the Caribbean movie for Johnny and the best for Mann. Yay! I love when smart movies win.

'Transformers' Box Office Bonanza

Share

Despite the fact that other than the special effects, the Tranformers pretty much sucked. However, it didn't suck at the box office.

The five-day opening gross of $201.2 million from 4,234 theaters domestically easily eclipsed the $152.4 million earned by Spider-Man 2, which previously held the five-day record for a Wednesday launch. And Transformers 2 nearly matched the best five-day gross of all time: $203.8 million for WB's The Dark Knight.

Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen broke records in several countries overseas, leading to a massive $387.3 million worldwide through Sunday, one of the best global launches ever.

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Has Best Wednesday Opening Ever

Share

Well, Michael Bay, looks like you win again. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed a record $60.6 million on its first day, making it the best opening day every for a Wednesday release.

With its $60.6 million, Transformers 2 beat previous record-holder for a Wednesday release, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which made $44.4 million during its Wednesday release in 2007.

The movie made $16 million in midnight runs alone, making it the third-best midnight Wednesday release after The Dark Knight, which made $18.5 million, and Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith, which made $16.9 million.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is predicted to make at least $100 million more during the week. No wonder everyone looks so happy at the premiere.

Well, now we know what those robots were disguised as: money. Obviously there is more to them than meets the eye. Haha!
