ASL Exclusive Interview: Lizzie Post

Lizzie Typepad041107Lizzie Post is the great-great granddaughter of Emily Post, THE foremost expert on socialite behavior and human interaction. Lizzie has just come out with a new fabulous book, "How Do You Work This Life Thing?"--a practical guide for all of us living in the real world, who are trying to figure out how to act in some of the stranger situations in which we find ourselves.

I had a chance to sit down with Lizzie and chat about her new book and some of her favorite tips from it!

CW: Tell us a little about yourself.
LP: Well I'm 24 years old and I live in Burlington, VT. I went to University of Vermont and got my B.S. in Art Education, and decided I hated the 5:30am-3:30pm schedule, so I didn't pursue teaching. I'm a painter, but for some reason, my couch sees more of me than my easel. My family and friends are very important to me and I'm lucky because they're all pretty cool. Let's see... I love to cook; I mean, I really love to cook, especially for my friends. Nothing beats getting a bunch of people together and making something yummy.

CW: How important is etiquette in your family?
LP: Well, you know, it pays the bills. Seriously, etiquette is very important to us, but not as you might think. What we really care about, is making people comfortable with each other.

CW: What inspired you to write "How Do You Work This Life Thing?" Is there a particular occurrence or story that coincides with the book's conception?
LP: The inspiration came from my freshman year in college. People slowly found out about my dad's book, "Essential Manners For Men," and they all thought a book for us would be a good idea. I thought about it and realized, "Yeah, we all spend a lot of energy and time complaining to each other about our roommates." So I started writing down ideas.

Celebrity Spotlight: David Wright

http://aslcdn.celebuzz.com/images/2007/04/david_wright_04030701-thumb.jpg

To welcome back the boys of summer, ASL's Celebrity Spotlight decided to feature one of the game's shining stars. Arguably the sexiest man in baseball, 24-year-old New York Mets third baseman David Wright is the son of a police officer and was raised a Mets fan. David's hometown, Norfolk, VA, is also the former home of the Mets AAA team, the Norfolk Tides. For as long as he can remember, David has been in love with the Mets, and now he is living his dream as a key player!

In 2001, David was chosen by the Mets in the Amateur Draft as the 38th overall pick. In 2003, David won the Sterling award for best player of the A (St. Lucie Mets) division. In 2004, David rose from AA (Binghamton Mets) to AAA (Norfolk Tides) and on July 21, 2004, he made his major league debut starting against the Montréal Expos. Since then, David Wright has been a powerhouse for the Mets, with both his exceptional batting abilities, as well as his skills at third base. In 2006, David was voted to play in baseball's All-Star Game, in which he hit a homerun in his first at-bat. He hit quite a few homeruns that weekend, actually, finishing 2nd in the Homerun Derby to Phillies' monster first baseman Ryan Howard.

In 2006, David founded The David Wright Foundation, a charity that provides financial support and raises awareness in need, focusing on the Norfolk, VA and New York City areas and paying special attention to Multiple Sclerosis and children's causes. This June 12, the Foundation is sponsoring a Poker Tournament, so save the date and try to make it out there for a good cause!

David Wright has more charisma than your average ball player. In fact, his teammates joke that their wives want to marry him! David's innocent yet rugged good looks have won him a permanent place in the female Mets fans hearts. Although he seems to have a healthy sense of his hotness factor (according to fellow teammate, Paul Lo Duca, in this month's New York magazine, "He thinks every woman in the world is in love with him, so we give him some shit, keep his feet on the earth."), David keeps his focus on baseball. Other than a few reports from Page Six about seeing him out with a supermodel on each arm, or this one article about him partying it up at St. John's University in Queens, David keeps his eye on the prize. David says to New York magazine, "Baseball is the reason I have my apartment, baseball is the reason I'm on the cover of video games - baseball is what I do. I'm not saying I don't ever...I mean, I go on dates, but I'll just never let something like that become as important as the game. Not right now, at least."

To which I reply, when you are ready, I am here!

Celebrity Spotlight: Johnny Knoxville

Johnny Knoxville 032707 07
(Splash)

Johnny Knoxville owes his sick sense of humor to his father, Phil Clapp, owner of Clapp's Tire Store in Knoxville, TN. Although Johnny was a daredevil from the start (his parents claim he would throw himself out of his crib for fun), his father would play practical jokes on him and everyone else throughout his childhood. What would you do if your father ran a lukewarm hot dog through your lips while you were asleep (then pretended to zip his pants when you awoke), or staged a gunfight at the Christmas party? How would you turn out if your father gave your buddies Ex-Lax or help you create letters from a VD clinic which were sent to several friends on the football team? Probably like our favorite Jackass, Johnny Knoxville.

Johnny was a straight-A student that craved being the center of attention (shocker). After graduating high school, Johnny packed up his bags and moved to California to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His stint as a college student didn't last much longer than a few weeks.

Johnny married the girl next door, a Texan named Melanie, in 1995. The couple ran off to Vegas with the intention of eloping, but Johnny, ever the responsible one, gambled away all their money and they had to tie the knot at a smaller church than they planned. In 1996, Johnny became a father to Madison. In order to support his family, Johnny Knoxville appeared in commercials (Taco Bell, Mountain Dew, etc.) and wrote a novel (he never finished it).

Knoxville struck gold when, in 1996, he got the idea to shoot himself with a taser, a .38, pepper spray, and a stun gun and then write about the experiences. This idea snowballed into what we now know (and love) as Jackass on MTV. Johnny has appeared in many movies, including Coyote Ugly, Life Without Dick, and Deuces Wild, to name a few.

A Socialite's Library: Great Big Beautiful Doll ~ The Anna Nicole Smith Story

Fresh off the presses, the updated version of Anna Nicole's biography is now available on Amazon. I read this book in one night - it was truly the saddest thing I ever laid my eyes on. What a heartbreaking story!

Written by the two people that discovered Anna, the book walks us through the murky details of her childhood (Anna disputed that Vergie Hart was her mother and said instead that her aunt sired her. The only problem with that story is that her aunt was 10 when Anna was born.), to the dizzy days of stripping and J. Howard Marshall, to the moment Anna met the authors and was discovered by Playboy, to her catapult to stardom, and then traces the steps to her tragic demise. Vickie Lynn Hogan (Anna's given name) had a larger than life existence fueled mainly by sheer ambition and her desire for money, drugs, fame, and sex.

Anna Nicole's childhood was marred by not knowing her father, and growing up with a volatile and competitive relationship with her mother, Vergie Hart. Anna was 5' 11", had mousey brown hair, and an A-cup. Admittedly, Anna was not popular in her Mexia, TX high school. Students in the town called her "nerdy" and even "common." After getting in a fight with a classmate that resulted in her expulsion, 16-year old Anna Nicole dropped out and got her first job at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken. It was here that she would meet her first husband and father of her son, Daniel, Billy Smith.

Six months after the birth of Daniel, Anna filed for divorce from Billy on the grounds that he was abusive, and she moved to Houston where the opportunities seemed boundless. Anna moved in with Vergie and tried to get work wherever she could. A brief stint as a waitress at Red Lobster led Anna to realize that she would not make enough money to fund the lifestyle she desired making minimum wage and measly tips. She also realized that living with Vergie was seriously limiting her fun, so she set out to make a better life for herself.

Keep reading about Anna's life after the jump.

Celebrity Spotlight: Julian McMahon

Julian031307

Julian McMahon is the son of the late Prime Minister of Australia, Sir William McMahon, and his wife Lady Sonia. This Nip/Tuck hottie didn't break into the business until after his first year of college. Julian attended the University of Sydney to study law, but became bored and dropped out to model and act in commercials.

Julian got his first acting gig as the lead in Australia's version of "Dynasty," "The Power, The Passion" in 1989 after being spotted in a jeans commercial. From there, Julian went on to work on the small screen, the big screen, and on stage. He had a guest appearance on Will and Grace, and then was cast as Detective John Grant in Profiler. After 80 episodes and a few random parts, he landed the role of Cole in Charmed, and then, my most favorite sex god with the fantastic ass, Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck. The man can make sex with Rosie look only severely nauseating (I didn't actually vomit), so that just proves how delicious he can be.

Oh yeah, and he was in (and almost nominated for a Razzi for Worst Supporting Actor) the Fantastic Four, too.

Julian McMahon details and more photos are after the jump.

Celebrity Spotlight: Ryan Gosling

Gosling%201.JPG

Ryan was born in London, Ontario at the same hospital as his current girlfriend, Rachael McAdams. He, along with his older sister Mandi, was raised as a strict Mormon by parents Thomas and Donna.

Ryan got his first taste of stardom after he auditioned for, and made, the cast of The Mickey Mouse Club in 1993. During his time on MMC, Ryan lived with co-star Justin Timberlake and his family.

Since his stint on The Mickey Mouse Club, Ryan has not received any formal acting training. However, he has navigated some intense and complicated roles with relative ease, appearing on TV in Young Hercules and Breaker High, as well as on the big screen in The Slaughter Rule, Murder by Numbers, Remember the Titans, Believer, the Notebook, and most recently (and notably), Half Nelson.

Ryan has developed a reputation for throwing himself into the roles he plays. He first commanded respect from critics in Believer, a film that required him to play an obsessive Jewish man, Danny, who turned to anti-Semitism to escape his inner torment. For his part in Believer, Gosling won the Best Male Lead at the 2002 Independent Spirit Awards and the Golden Aires Award from the Russian Guild of Film Critics.

Ryan most recently received a Best Actor nomination from the Academy for his role in Half Nelson, in which he plays an inner-city teacher with a drug problem. We all saw him (with his little bald head) arriving at the awards with his mother and sister. His choice of date caused some speculation about the status of his relationship with McAdams, but we have been assured that the "Best Kiss" couple is alive and well.

Keep reading after the jump for more juicy facts on Ryan!

A Socialite's Library: Fired!

We all hate our jobs sometimes. In fact, if it weren't for this website, I'd probably be chillin' with Britney in rehab (or at least crying and shaving my legs by a pool). Sometimes the best jobs turn out to be nightmares, and the nightmare jobs turn out to be awesomely fantastic. When it comes down to it, we just don't really know what we're getting into, and when we do find out, it's often too late. Fired! by Annabelle Girwitch is a compilation of professional horror stories, as told to her by her celebrity buddies. Annabelle was famously fired by her idol, Woody Allen, in the harshest of ways. He called her retarded! Annabelle was crushed (deservedly), and while leaning on the shoulders of her famous friends, let it all hang out and told her the stories of their failures...Luckily for us, Annabelle published the stories - names and all. Since reading the book, I've put down my razor and walked away from the pool...I totally don't have it that bad!

Broken out into five chapters (Jobs So Terrible You Can Only Hope To Be Fired, The Firing You Didn't See Coming, The Time You Deserved To Be Fired, The Time Getting Fired Leads You To Something Better, and That Time You Had To Fire Yourself), this book has something for everyone. There's that time Brian Unger was dismissed from E! because his look stopped being right (he apparently broke the cameras). He went from interview Jennifer Lopez, Garner, and Aniston, to standing outside in the rain doing intros before getting the axe.

Celebrity Spotlight: Ryan Reynolds

Ryanreynoldsshirtless022007

Well, you spoke, and we listened! Survey results indicate that you are celeb hungry bastards, and we at ASL aim to please. So, once a week (starting today) we will be publishing a profile on a celebrity, sports professional, and even the occasional juicy politician that you may not know very much about. And since we are always interested in what you think, if there is anyone you want to hear about, drop us a line (in the comments section) and let us know!

Ryan Reynolds is the youngest of four brothers, and the son of a businessman and saleswoman. Ryan officially began his career at age 14 with a role in the Nickelodeon show, Fifteen (otherwise known as Hillside). After the show's two-year run, Ryan appeared in several made for TV movies and TV series such as The Odyssey, Ordinary Magic, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Displeased with the direction he saw his career going in, Ryan decided to quit the business in 1996.

Ryan picked up acting again in 1997 after running into fellow Canadian actor Chris Martin and moving to LA. The two moved into a cheap motel, and on the first night, Ryan's jeep was stripped and rolled down a hill. For months, he drove it around without doors! Luckily, Reynolds landed the role of Berg in "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place" and was able to get a new ride. The show took off in its second season, and has since helped Ryan land many film roles (most notably, in my opinion, National Lampoon's Van Wilder, for which he won the Next Generation Male at the Young Hollywood Awards and was nominated for Breakthrough Male Performance at the MTV Movie Awards).

Ryan has also been in recent hits like Smokin' Aces, The Nines, Just Friends, Waiting, Harold and Kumar, The Blade: Trinity, and Amityville Horror (the last MGM picture ever). The buzz around him during the Blade promotional period was daunting. Reynold's put on 20 lbs. of pure muscle, and he looked HOT! Check out how he did it here.

Ryan recently split up with long time love and fiance, and fellow Nickelodeon star Alanis Morrissette. Prior to the Jagged Little Pill, he dated Rachael Leigh Cook for a year.

For fun Ryan Reynold's facts (and photos of Ryan with his new look), keep reading after the jump.
