Body Buzz: Burn Off 500 Calories With Cardio

Cardio032907Aerobic exercise is the quickest way to burn calories and fat. The key, however, is to speed up the workout and add high intensity bursts throughout your training. Here are a few plans that will help you have a high intense workout and look and feel better in just 30 days!

These four routines listed below were created by Jonathan Ross, the American Council of Exercise's 2006 Personal Trainer of the year, so I'm guessing the guy knows a thing or two about fitness. Ross, who also owns a fitness gym in Maryland, suggests: "To get the most out of your workouts, be sure you're moving the machine instead of it moving you." Wrap your brain around THAT, my little fitness monkeys.

Treadmill
0-4 minutes Walk at 3.5 mph on a 3-6% incline (steep enough to feel it working your glutes and calves).
4-6 Jog at 5.0 - no incline
6-8 Walk at 3.5 mph on a 3-6% incline
8-10 Run at 6.0 - no incline
10-50 repeat the above circuit 4 times
50-52 Cool down walk at 3.0 with no incline
Approximately you will burn 530 calories - but that will vary depending on your weight.

Beauty Buzz: Oatmeal Not Just For Breakfast

Oatmeal032607We all know that oatmeal is a great breakfast treat, but it can also be used as a scrub! Unless you live under a rock I am sure you have heard of an "oatmeal scrub." It makes a great scrub because it soothes your skin, and is really good for those of you who have oily or combination skin. Oatmeal scrub is a delicate abrasive that gets rid of impurities and leaves you with sparkling, glowing skin!

The best part is that you can make your own oatmeal scrub. There are several different recipes out there, some of which include using honey and almonds as well. Here is one recipe that is easy to follow. You will need the following ingredients -

2 to 3 aloe vera leaves
2 Tbs. honey
2 drops geranium essential oil
2 drops palmarosa essential oil (good for fighting acne)
1 cup ground almonds
1 cup colloidal oatmeal

Beauty Buzz: Beauty Products Gone Natural

Beauty032307It seems that we are all increasingly concerned about what we put in our bodies these days, but what about what we're puting on our bodies? Skincare, eye-creams and even fragrances have all made the move to "go green" and integrate more eco-friendly and organic products into their wares. With that in mind, here are a few beauty products to check out!

Jurlique Eye Gel -
Jurlique offers a light, herbal antioxidant gel that helps firm, tone and brighten up the skin around your eyes, while gently protecting that delicate area around the eyes. This product also helps to diminish the visible signs of aging. It retails for $121.00 and can be found at www.jurlique.com

Carol's Daughter Almond Cookie Body Butter -

Body Buzz: 5 Minute Core Workout

Chances are that if you are not living under a rock, or haven't been living in Antarctica for the past fifteen years, you have probably heard of 7-minute abs! Summer is just around the corner, and in order to get that perfect beach body, you might feel it necessary to do about a 1,000 crunches! Fear not, there is a better way and it only takes about five minutes!

Cathy Sassin, adventure racer and Intrafitt-exercise performance specialist has designed a 5-minute core workout that will not only get you your body bikini-ready, but by sculpting your core, will also give you more stamina to perform your favorite sports, which may include swimming and/or running outdoors. Try these moves:

Ab Workout Knee Lift

Ball Squat with Knee Lift - 1 minute
Targets: Glutes, Hamstrings, Quadriceps, Core, Chest, Shoulders
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a weighted ball in front of your chest. Bend your knees 90 degrees. Hold for 2 counts. Slightly straighten your legs, shifting your weight to your left foot as you lift your right knee to waist height and extend your arms overhead (see picture). Return to start and complete 10 reps on each side.

The workout continues after the jump.

Beauty Buzz: Can Switching Shampoos Make Hair Look Healthier?

Pantene032107I have heard that in order to maintain a healthy mane, you're supposed to switch your shampoo every three weeks or so. The truth is that your hair doesn't know the difference between brands and experts say that your hair cannot build up a tolerance to your shampoo. Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month.

However, it is a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo if you use particularly sticky styling products that contain wax, or if you have oily hair. Using a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks will help wash away the residue. I don't have oily hair, but because I use hairspray and I have hard water, I like to use a clarifying shampoo to help remove any build-up left behind. Here are some shampoos worth checking out.

Pantene Pro-V Shampoo, Purity Clarifying penetrates the hair and helps to restore the natural amino proteins that can be steadily lost. This product will leave your hair feeling silky and refreshed and is available for $4.39 at www.drugstore.com.

Body Buzz: Do Cereal Bars Curb Cravings?

Sb-032007Cereal bars do they help you or hurt you? Chances are, you've tried a power bar or a granola bar once or twice, but do they really curb cravings or do they just make you more hungry? Personally, I've found that a cereal bar for a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack has really helped me power through to the next meal. Here are a few cereal bars are not only a great snack, but provide essential nutrients in addition to stopping your hunger dead in its tracks.

My personal favorites are the South Beach Cereal Bars, which come in several different flavors. The great thing about these bars is that it takes more than three bits to eat them, and they're low in sugar. With flavors like Peanut Butter, Chocolate and Cinnamon Raisin, most are 140 calories per bar.

Beauty Buzz: Drugstore Favorite - Dove's Pro-Age Line

Dove 031907 01We all know that the Dove brand is great for soaps, lotions and deodorants and now they have a complete line dedicated to anti-aging! This line was developed for women in their later years, but there is no time like the present for prevention! Body care, facial cleansers, night creams and beauty serums are all a part of this line wonderful new line by Dove. Dove's Pro Age line is not a "quick fix" it's designed to make a real difference in your skin's condition. Here are a few products you might want to try out -

Dove Pro Age Rich Nightcream - This product contains several softening and soothing emollients. This product will deeply condition and fortify the skin, improving surface cell turnover. Not too mention the glycerin will help to restore elasticity. This product retails for $11.99 at www.drugstore.com.

Beauty Buzz: Spain Gives Models and Mannequins A Makeover

Model031607The ongoing battle of the anorexic model continues for the fashion world- it has now reached the fashionable store windows of Spain. Since last year's ban of "skinny models" on the runways of Madrid and Milan during fashion week the fashion industry has been working on ways to counter the image of "skinny models", which some believe are contributed by eating disorders. Skeletal looking mannequins in store window fronts, and the leggy, long size zero models that grace the runways have lead Spain to get rid of the barely there dummies (mannequins not the models) and replace them with healthier looking ones.

Two big changes, announced in late January, are in the works: Stores run by four big names will start swapping window display mannequins so that none are less than size 38 (roughly equivalent to a U.S. size 6). The designers will standardize the dimensions of their women's apparel so that a given size will fit the same way no matter who sells it.

To get a better idea of the shapes of Spanish women's bodies, the government is employing some serious technology. Using laser-fitted booths that can take 130 measurements of a body in 30 seconds, the health ministry is fanning out across the country to evaluate the true sizes of Spanish women. Bring this program to the United States!! Wouldn't that be nice if a size 8 at the Gap was a size 8 at Ann Taylor?
