Young Brits & Old Hollywood Recognized At BAFTA Awards

Share

Recently engaged, Emily Blunt, was radiant in her burgundy dress on the red carpet for this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts Britannia awards. The actress took home the prize for British artist of the year and said of her award, "To be honored with something that's so emblematic of where I'm from is really exciting."

Her co-star from The Wolfman, Benicio del Toro, was just one of many gents on the red carpet in a dapper tuxedo. Colin Firth was presented with a humanitarian award and also gets two thumbs-up from us for his impeccable ensemble.

Hollywood legends, Robert De Niro and Kirk Douglas, were also recognized with De Niro awarded the Stanley Kubrick award for excellence in film for his worldwide contribution to filmed entertainment.

Also, it would appear that the young Slumdog Millionaire real-life couple of Dev Patel and Freida Pinto are still going strong.

The Slumdog Ate My Homework

Share

Slumdog Millionaire child celebrities Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Rubina Ali were more than merely acting like kids from the shantytowns of Mumbai.  When they were hired to perform in the Oscar-winning film, they were actually living slumdog life.  After filming, however, the filmmakers were taken by the youths and set up a trust for Ismail and Ali.

"The Jai Ho trust provides an education, living allowance and housing for the young stars," to the tune of a monthly allowance of $120 a month, new homes, and a lump sum once they turn 18.  Sounds like an decent plan to ensure they get the proper "start in life" the filmmakers had in mind.  To come into their full trust funds, the kid actors must attend school and graduate with a high school degree.  Sweet deal.

Too bad Azharuddin and Rubina don't really feel like going to school these days.  Instead, they have been jet-setting to Paris, Cochin, Chennai to attend events and parties, which has resulted in a poor attendance record at school ("Azhar is only showing up at school 37 percent of the time, and Rubina has only a 27 percent").  Should they not bring their attendance to 70 percent, their stipends and lump sums will be lost.

The benefactors are "disappointed" and "have urged both families to honor their commitment."  Of course these kids have no grasp of the kind of dough that's on the line, so the parents had better get their puppies on the program.  Guardians from both actors have made commitments to get them back in school, and have tried to make excuses for their absences.

No one wants these beloved stars to lose a chance at a better future, but come on, 60-70 percent absence is pretty shameful.  They'd better hit the books and stop partying so hard.  I mean, if this is how much they are living it up at ages 10 and 11, imagine where they'll be in a few more years.  Today it's red carpet interviews, tomorrow, what, a VH1 countdown interview for Child Stars Where Are They Now?

Oscar Nomination = Free Lunch

Share

Of course, it's an honor just to be nominated. In addition, those who have been recognized with an Academy Award nomination are also privy to a special luncheon in their honor.

Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, the event hosted such glamorous Oscar hopefuls as actresses Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Taraji P. Henson, Melissa Leo, Viola Davis and Penelope Cruz.

This sounds like fun for a normal person, but eating so soon before the big day, ladies? Kidding, of course! These actresses seem like the eating type. Also, that's why Spanx was invented.

Featured in the gallery:  Marisa Tomei, Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke, Gus Van Zant, Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz, Josh Brolin, Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo, Robert Downey Jr., Danny Elfman, Danny Boyle, Richard Jenkins, Frank Langella and Ron Howard.''

Freida Pinto: Slumdog Model

Share

The lovely Freida Pinto is one of the hot young things of 2009. She stars as Latika in Danny Boyle's award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. Before she made her debut, she was an aspiring model in India. Here she is in some shots taken by "famed Bollywood photographer" (according to the Daily Mail) Ryan Martis.

Pinto, having met them at various awards functions, says that she's gotten good advice from Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet.

"Angelina is just like, 'Embrace it. Enjoy it and keep it real. Don't get affected by all this, enjoy every moment," Pinto said.

"Every time I have a question, she's [Kate Winslet] always there to answer it. I really think it'd be fun to work with Winslet because I found support in her."

Can Kate Winslet answer my questions as well? Freida isn't the only one with life situations!

DGA Awards Honor Danny Boyle & 'Slumdog Millionaire'

Share

Director Danny Boyle and his movie Slumdog Millionaire continued their wildly successful run this awards season by nabbing the Directors Guild of America top prize. The film was awarded the DGA feature award, beating out The Dark Knight, Milk, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon.

This award is usually a pretty good predictor of Oscar success, so Danny might want to go ahead and get that speech ready for the big night. I love this awards show! It's 90% nerdy guys in guits! And I mean REAL nerds, not the American Apparel kind.

And the other 10% was hot people--the Christian Bale and Marisa Tomei kind of hot.

Featured in the gallery: Gus Van Zant, Michelle Monaghan, Richard Jenkins, Freida Pinto, Lisa Edelstein, Rachel Griffiths, Roger Ebert, Frank Langella, Dev Patel, Danny Bolye, Viola Davis, Josh Brolin, Melissa Leo, Amy Adams, Ron Howard, Christopher Nolan, Tarji P. Henson, Marisa Tomei, Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, Virginia Madsen, Teri Seymour and Susanna Hoffs.

Newcomer Dev Patel Battles Brad Pitt At BAFTAS

Share

18-year-old Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel has been a busy man this awards season. The young newcomer has found himself in the company of Hollywood veterans like Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke and Brad Pitt, all of whom have been receiving accolades for their respective films.

With the Danny Boyle-directed picture receiving 11 nominations from British Academy Film and Television Awards, the critically lauded Slumdog Millionaire is going head-to-head with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as the most nominated movie for this year's awards.

But the real competition at this year's BAFTAs is for Kate Winslet, who's been nominated for both her role in The Reader as well as Revolutionary Road. A Kate divided against itself cannot stand! Worlds are colliding!
