Over the past two years Jared Leto and his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, have been through a battle. They tried to break up with their label, EMI/Virgin, were sued by their label, publicly protested against their label, and then crawled back to resign with their label. (Remember when Jared Leto was an actor and he used to break up with Scarlett Johansen and Cameron Diaz? Was this really the right route, Jared? )
After the struggle it's probably not only fitting that their third album is called This is War, but it's also probably a weak middle finger to Virgin. During the conflict, Leto found solace in making the record.
"There were so many outside influences that were in conflict that work on the record was actually quite peaceful. It was a case of survival, to tell the truth." At the same time Leto describes the experience as strangely suicidal. "We were literally having to kill ourselves at times. I had it written on the wall: Kill yourself to finish.'" (Literally, Jared? I don't think you literally understand what that word means.)
The first video from the album, "Kings and Queens" was shot in the streets of LA at night and though no premiere date is known they released a promo clip for it that is 30 seconds long. (Get it?)
Leto's whole descent into a rocker character seemed ridiculous and fake to a lot of people in the industry. But the bands won some awards and sold something like 2 million records according to Leto, so someone must like these guys. Will you give this album a chance?
