The Top Trends at the Fall Shows

Rules2

White is the new Black-it's clean, sophisticated and will get you entry to Puffy's White Party

Gold and Silver-what a great way to add some luster to your look!

Oversided Accessories-from huge handbags that look like you could fit in them to funky plastic jewelry, accessories are taking on obscene proportions Mrs. Roper would love.

Thick Tights-not since the 80's have we seen so many tights in such great patterns and colors.

Hats are Back-they complete any outfit and hide your face from those pesky paparazzi.

Wide Pants-they are oh-so slimming because they make your hips look smaller in relation to your legs.

Huge Polka Dots-think they are only for Minnie Mouse? Polka Dotted dresses are popping up everywhere.

The Most Ubiquitous Trend at Fashion Week? The Lack of Star Power

Rules2

When you are used to seeing the front rows of fashion shows peppered with A-list celebs and reality-show contestants, it is a shock to discover very few celebrities at this year's Fall Fashion Week. It might have to do with the cold. It might have something to do with the fact that Fashion Week occurred at the same time as Superbowl Sunday. But Fashion Week is always held in February in Manhattan, so it is usually cold out. So what is the reason behind the current lack of star power this Fashion Week? Britney Spears attended Baby Phat. But overall, the biggest names were Rachel Weisz, Donald Trump, Fergie (the Dutchess turned Weight Watchers spokesman, not the one who is Fergelicious), Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon. Designers usually blow their budget paying celebs to attend. They pay for first class airfare and hotels for the celebs and their huge entourages. Then they pay the celebs themselves, tens of thousands of dollars. Nicky Hilton was paid $30,000 for hosting Macy's Presents Kiss and Tell Party last Thursday night. Cate Blanchett was flown around via private jet to the Armani Show. Rock and Republic paid $5000-$15,000 to celebs to attend their shows. Dolce and Gabanna paid JLo to attend their recent show in Milan. And you know Jenny from the Block does not come cheap. Most designers would never admit to paying actors to attend their show. However, Kate Bosworth admitted that the only reason she came to the shows is because they paid her.

Tinsleys and Britneys and Parasites, Oh My!

Rules2

The hugely popular (in Japan) Tinsley Mortimer graced the Peter Som show to a sophisticated collection. Former BFF's Paris and Brit Brit ditched the Wizard of Oz themed Heatherette show because they feared a run in. It would have been fun had they actually ran into each other at the show, because a dance-off would certainly have ensued. Paris refers to Brit Brit as "Animal" mocking her trashy look, nappy extensions and apparent lack of self-control. That is the pot calling the kettle black, as Parisite was spotted doing shots with Mr. Firecrotch himself, Brandon Davis, at Butter the previous night. At the show, Paris was slated to work the runway while Brit Brit was supposed to be in the audience. Kimora Lee Simmons and Lydia Hearst worked the runway as Kimberly Stewart and former In Syncer JC Chasez looked on.

Rock and Roll, Modern Luxe and Billionaire Bag Lady Chic

Rules2

Joan Jett and Carmen Electra took in the Anna Sui show replete with babydoll dresses, high boots and a vintage rocker vibe. A very fashionable Lenny Kravitz and queen bee Lil' Kim were in the front row at Marc Jacobs. Donald and Melania Trump took in the Michael Kors show. Kors created whimiscal outfits from fur and cozy cashmere. He spiced up weekender bags with some shine and sparkle. He employed wearable neutrals in champagne and truffle, a tan and brown color palette. Bare shoulders peeked out of cashmere sweater dresses. Kors jumped on the jumpsuit train with a strapless black version. He also showed a sparkly crystal embellished gown, perfect for the lady who loves to be in the center spotlight. Bag Hags Mary-Kate and Ashley's bag lady chic style with lots of layers has inspired many of the collections. At Proenza Schouler, Jake McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez layered disparate looks to create something totally fresh, such as layering t-shirts under evening gowns.

Runway Redux: Strong Enough for a Man but Made for a Woman

Rules2

An underlying theme in many of the fall collections is "soft yet strong." Clothes are feminine without being too flighty and infused with buttoned-up menswear tailoring. Neutral colors like brown, hunter green and gray are accented with pops of plum, berry and blue.Tulle overlays over printed fabrics are very in, to indulge your inner ballerina without being to frou frou. Structure has replaced the deconstructed, slouchy looks of the last few years and the fall collection features a slim fit overall.

Betsey Johnson toned it down with her charm school-theme show. The cartwheeling 65-year-old, best known for her fluorescent green, hot pink and leopard print collections reminiscent of a Technicolor street-walker in the Meatpacking District, showed a surprisingly demure collection in subtle colors and wearable shapes.

Prison Ankle Bracelets, Drunk Driving, and Disgraced Beauty Queens are all the Rage

Rules2

Miss USA Tara Conner just got out of rehab and appeared as a guest model at the Tadashi show. The repentant beauty pageant winner almost got dethroned after she was seen all over the New York club scene drinking up a storm and snorting cocaine. Also at the show was 18-year-old Miss Teen USA, Katie Blair, who came under fire for underage drinking and kissing Miss USA. As a result, she was dropped as a spokesperson for Mothers Against Drink Driving.

If you thought handcuff necklaces are hot, consider this. Actress Michelle Rodriguez attended the Marc Jacobs show sporting the signature accessory of the season: a court-imposed ankle bracelet! The former LOST cast member was court-ordered to wear the bracelet after a drunk-driving arrest in Hawaii. The bracelet registers her sweat for alcohol use.

Fall Beauty Forecast

Rules2

Runway makeup is usually pretty dramatic with smoky eye makeup or bright red lips. This year, the models look fresh faced and scrubbed. Natural beauty was the signature fall look for the runway. Lacoste and Yeohlee had no eye makeup, where others opted for a pop of color, like a wash of sheer red lip color at Abaete or a flush of lavender on the eyelid at Twinkle. The pale-skinned ingenue was favored over the bronze goddess look. Pale is the new tan, as highlighter has replaced self-tanner all over the runway. It is all about a complexion perfection with a hint of subtle color to enhance women's natural beauty, and not compete with the clothes. Let your natural beauty shine through this fall with these barely-there non-made up makeup looks.

Fall Trend Report

Rules2

Classic suits and neat tailoring are sweeping the runway. Day wear transitions to evening wear and evening pieces are integrated into daytime outfits. Embroidery and tunics are hot. White jumpsuits abound, with Luca Luca sporting the moon man from outer space look, infusing apres ski with a futuristic edge. Disco queens rejoice; metallic looks gilded in gold were spotted all over the runway. Say goodbye to Tara Reid's exposed thong and muffin tops pouring over low rise jeans. Today rang the death knell of low rise jeans, the scourge of fashion that gave ordinarily attractive girls plumber butt for the last few years. High-waisted jeans are making a comeback. Waists have not been this high since the Regan administration. Glaringly absent are the ubiquitous wide belts from last season. All in all, Fall Fashion Week's trends are plentiful and varied enough to appeal to socialites, social climbers and social misfits alike.

Runway Redux: Short Skirts paired with Textured Tights

Rules2

Textured tights are a hot trend, when paired with short flirty skirts. Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan and Tracy Reese all showed hemlines above the knee, a departure from the calf-length skirts that girls have been wearing for the last couple of years. Diane Von Furstenberg updated her iconic wrap dress in dressy taffeta fabric paired with an over sized bow at the waist, perfect for a night on the town.

Susan Sarandon, Anderson Cooper, Charlie Rose and Ellen Barkin attended the Diane Von Furstenberg show.

DKNY Channels Citilights All Aglow

Rules2

Donna Karan mixed casual outfits with evening wear at the DKNY show. She employed glitzy tops to liven up a humdrum suit and used hearts on bow blouses to add a touch of whimsy to otherwise buttoned-up, classically tailored styles. Karan's favorite color, black, was everywhere, mixed with gray, berry, violet and yellowish green. Karan said that she was inspired by the sexy buzz of Manhattan at night when streets are "a blur of dotted lights and neon color." 80's touches like silver sequined leggings added a touch of whimsy to Karan's sexy buzz chic.

Kate Spade's husband Jack Spade plans to hand out cookies shaped like hot dogs and hamburgers this week to raise awareness about the painfully thin, sunken treasure chested models.
