Old Hollwood Honors Lauren Bacall & Roger Corman [Photo Gallery]

Share

A little of new Hollywood was there, but most of them were over at the MOCA gala Saturday night. For the first time since the Academy of Motion Pictures and Arts and Science's Board of Governors began bestowing their Honorary Award and The Irving G, Thalberg Awards, instead of presenting them during the LiveOscar telecast, this year the Governors Awards were handed out to Producer John Calley, actress Lauren Bacall, producer-director Roger Corman, and cinematographer Gordon Willis, along with 600 invited guests in attendance, at the Grand Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center on Saturday night.

The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given to an individual for "extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.

Those on hand to honor Bacall and Corman were Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Angelica Houston, Gabby Sidibe, Virginia Madsen, Warren Beatty, Annett Bening, Quentin Tarantino, Jeff Bridges, Alec Baldwin, Abbie Cornish, Morgan Freeman, Ron Howard, Amy Smart, Maria Bello, Jennifer Tilly, Meg Tilly, Sally Kellerman, Marisa Tomei, Tom Ford, Nia Vardalos, Vera Farmiga and Dana Delany.

Tom Hanks Declares 'Single Ladies' Best Song Of 2009

Share

The ever-lovable Tom Hanks took his charming movie star self to David Letterman's talk show (although the baby he met outside the studio didn't think he was so charming) and dropped a bombshell of a revelation. The Forest Gump star admitted that his favorite song of 2009 is none other than the catchy Beyonce Knowles song, "Single Ladies."

Starting to sing the catchy tune for the audience, Hanks crooned something to the effect of, "Dada-dada ring on it! Dada-dada ring on it!" The 53-year-old Hollywood veteran admits, "That is a damn fine song, the Beyonce song...because it's infectious."

Additionally, Hanks finds that the lyrics have been applicable in his relationship with his wife, Rita Wilson, confessing that his thoughts when they first met were as follows: "I'm gon' put a ring on that finger. I'm gon' take that thing home."

The only thing missing is a Tom putting on black unitard and shaking his groove thang.

Julia Roberts And Other A-List Stars Are Losing Their Box-Office Draw

Share

It's a scary thing when one is no longer a box-office powerhouse. I mean, isn't that why we give them the name A-List celebrity to begin with? Julia Roberts, currently in the middle of shooting Eat, Love, Pray, is just one of the many celebs to falter at the box office this past year. Let's run through the list, shall we?

Julia's film Duplicity that cost $60 million only made $40.6 million at the box office, so if Julia wants to keep her status Eat, Pray, Love needs to do really well. Will Ferrell had a total bomb with Land of the Lost, a $100 million movie that only sold $49 million worth of tickets. Funny man Adam Sandler also had flop with Funny People, which did sort of well the first week, but basically died the second. Tom Hanks' Angels and Demons was gone before anyone knew it was here. And Denzel Washington and John Travolta also had a flop with The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3.

What could be the reason for these flops? Mostly, it's a good story that doesn't translate well to the screen, and sometimes it is even the actor or actress. Either he or she disappeared for far too long to have people still care, or it's always the same shtick in every movie, or the need to break away from one they are known for freaks people out.

The real hope this week is that Brad Pitt will be able to carry the film Inglourious Basterds basically by himself, as he's been the main focus of the entire ad campaign. If that doesn't work, the fate of the Hollywood A-List will become literally unforeseeable.

Some analysts believe that the use of social networking sites on the internet may also be to blame. That one, I completely believe. Think about it. If your friend hates a movie, it becomes their status update, and you don't bother to see it. Or sometimes you do, only to dislike it as well and tell others not to see it. Bottom line: Studios need to make good movies. And that, my friends, is easier said than done.

'Angels & Demons' Premieres In Rome Amidst Controversy

Share

One of Time's most influential people, Tom Hanks premiered his latest film Angels & Demons in Rome, Italy, much to the chagrin of local Catholic leaders.

The head of Sony Pictures Steve Elzer has spoken out against criticism against the film by saying, "We do not believe the film is anti-Catholic, and we don't believe the nearly 40 million people worldwide who purchased the novel were confused by the fact that this is a fictional mystery thriller."

In response, Jack Valero, a spokesman for the Opus Dei UK, which the film characterizes as mysterious underground religious sect, has said, "I find it offensive, as will other Catholics, but I'm not going to bother spending too much time thinking about it."

But the real question at hand here is, does Tom Hanks have another drastic weight gain and subsequent loss for a movie role still in him? Why? Because that's what I bother spending too much time thinking about.

Julia Roberts Goes Blue For Gala Honoring Tom Hanks

Share

And we're not talking about her dress. That was Sally Field.

In a simple white dress and black cardigan, Glamazon Julia Roberts dropped some F-bombs at the Film Society of Lincoln Center event to honor Tom Hanks. Though the actress might have looked sweet, the words coming out of her mouth at the podium were anything but.

Jokingly, Roberts told the audience, "Alright well, it's late and I'm paying my babysitter overtime and I have to pee."

The star continued, "So Tom, everybody f-----g likes you. All my bits are gone. Listen, I had lunch today with Rita [Wilson, Hanks' wife], and her t--s were here [motioned high] and her waist was here [motioned small] and her a-- was like that [motioned high], so what can I tell you that's new? Tom Hanks, what the f--k?"

But it was all good, as she wrapped up her expletive-laden speech teasing the actor about his hairstyle in Ladykillers and his accent in The Terminal by saying, "Tom Hanks, I love you." That Julia has no problem taking the gloves off when the occasion calls for it.

Courteney Cox And Gwyneth Paltrow Are Honored For Cancer Efforts

Share

Last night Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were the master of ceremonies at the 14th Annual Saks Fifth Avenue's Unforgettable Evening, which gave a special nod to women's cancer research activists Courteney Cox and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Both actresses glowed in their white gowns, and were joined by cancer research co-chairs Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, as well as Jay-Z and Beyonce - who belted out some "Sasha Fierce" tunes for the party.

But considering the event was supposed to be about, well, cancer, Gwyneth's acceptance speech seemed a little odd.  The Oscar-winning actress likened herself to a "housewife" and then self-consciously announced (guess she's been reading the rumors?) that her hubby Chris Martin's absence was due to "being in Japan" for Coldplay business.

Whoa Gywn, put away the excuse book.  David Arquette couldn't make it either!

Obama Celebrated At Star-Studded 'We Are One' Concert

Share

Washington D.C. morphed into Hollywood yesterday for the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. Stars everywhere helped kick off Barack Obama's inauguration and rallied the crowds with a series of speeches and performances.

Denzel Washington gave the introductory speech, Laura Linney spoke about Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Marin Luther King III quoted from John F. Kennedy. Queen Latifah also spoke saying: "We're celebrating not just the Inauguration of a new president, but the journey of America continuing to be America."

However, probably most inspiring were the musical performances.

Bruce Springstreen sang the post-911 anthem "The Rising" Mary J. Blige sang "Lean On Me" while Sheryl Crow and Will.I.Am united for Bob Marley's "One Love.

The most anticipated of all the performances was when U2 performed "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "City of Blinding Lights."

Beyonce was the glittery, grande finale, singing "America the Beautiful."
Below is Beyonce's performance of "America the Beautiful."

News Bites: Kendra Wilkinson Is Sorry

Share

- Former Girl Next Door Kendra Wilkinson (seen here at a book singing last month) recently gave an interview to Us in which she made Hugh Hefner look like an ass, and complained that she had to sneak out of the Playboy Mansion for sex. Well, obviously Hef had some words with her because she's apologizing. "I'm more upset at myself with what I said," Wilkinson stated. "I'm really bad at interviews and anyone who knows me knew I meant no harm. I'm a goofball. I'm very sorry to have hurt Hef. Playboy made me who I am, and Hef has done more for me than anyone else. In my heart, I will always love Hef and Playboy." Wilkinson says she even dropped by the mansion to apologize in person and that Hef was hurt but understood. Probably because she threw in a lap dance and some Benefiber.

- Tom Hanks, who is an executive producer on the Mormon polygamy drama Big Love, came out against Mormons who supported Proposition 8 at the premiere party for the HBO show on Wednesday night. Prop 8 was passed in California in November and rendered gay marriage illegal. "The truth is this takes place in Utah, the truth is these people are some bizarre offshoot of the Mormon Church, and the truth is a lot of Mormons gave a lot of money to the church to make Prop-8 happen," he said. "There are a lot of people who feel that is un-American, and I am one of them. I do not like to see any discrimination codified on any piece of paper, any of the 50 states in America, but here's what happens now. A little bit of light can be shed, and people can see who's responsible, and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting Constitution, and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian, constitutional process." Get it, Tom!

- Veteran actor Richard Dreyfuss is starring in a play called Complicit at the Old Vic Theatre (which is run by Kevin Spacey) in London and audience-goers to previews have been annoyed because the Jaws star is reportedly using an earpiece for line cues. So the actual opening of the show has been delayed from Jan 19 to Jan 28. The official word is that the production needed "more development time." Actors don't need to do much. There's no heavy lifting involved. So learn your lines.
